    Great tutorial. Thank you! Can you explain why you use the the names "holdouts;shadow;CDL" in the 'source name' input of the geometry render settings? Also, where do these names come from. You only created the 'shadow' extra pass.

      @@simondebrun If I use only the shadow pass, it will give shadows for the entire scene. However, if I specify holdouts, shadow, and CDL(Color Decision List), it will generate shadows for the holdout object only.

      Houdini 20.5 relies more on a better GPU due to the Vulkan viewport update. I understand budget constraints, but you'll need both a strong GPU and CPU. This is just a tip, but be sure to do your own research and financial planning. You could consider buying a lower-spec laptop with 16 GB of RAM and a 4-6 GB GPU, ensuring that Houdini can run on it. Alternatively, you can use cloud-based PCs from platforms like "Neverinstall." They offer access to high-performance GPUs and 48 GB of RAM, and their monthly charges are relatively low. However, it depends on a stable internet connection, so make sure to evaluate whether this option is feasible for you.

      For simulations and rendering, AMD Ryzen processors, especially the Ryzen 9 series, are generally better because they offer more cores and threads at a better price-to-performance ratio compared to Intel. More cores help with faster rendering and simulations in Houdini. However, Intel offers slightly better single-core performance, which is useful for tasks where speed per core matters.

    44:48 I don't have a selection in version 20.5, I do everything according to the tutorial, but nothing is selected and the animation is not static at the ends of the wall

    Bro i'm not able to fix that ue5.4 error of alembic flie taht shown in video please help....i'm simple using box rbd facture nothing complex or anything simple box fall simulation....not able to import in ue5....it's working fine in blender but in ue it is showing that 5 vertices error...help me

      Before exporting just use the divide node, it will make triangle mesh, this will solve that error

      @@VFXMagics i used divide node but it make geometry invisible before Rop Alembic and when i use divide after geometry mesh it doesn't work.... that's the issue

      Oh I missed showing that step. It's very simple: go to File > Export > Filmbox FBX and select only the camera. That will export it.

    Hi, how would you apply Gravity on the arms after the shoulders are destroyed ? It would look more realistic.

      @@lagammeanimee Hey, I ran a few tests for that, but I wasn't too happy with the results. It was kind of killing the slow-motion beauty of the Disintegration. However, I included the setup-if you watch closely, there's a pocket dropping on the floor, so I kept that. But yeah, we can definitely drop the shoulder based on the growth area detachment with this setup

      @@lagammeanimee Yeah, the gravity approach didn't work well with this animation, but it could look good with some adjustments. You know, those extra efforts really make the FX stand out. Maybe adding a bit of gravity to the pieces and having them disintegrate into particles would improve the effect. We'll need to spend time choreographing that.

    So far so good, thank you for making this - but!... I can't figure out why my volume isn't displaying shadows? I tested a simple cube and sphere, and the light creates shadows for them. I thouhght it might be DOP Import Field, display is set to smoke... so I wonder why it's not showing shadows? I checked Display Options, and shadows are set to Area, I tried alternate shadow types and no luck. Any ideas?

    Alembic is option for cinematic but not for games. VAT is the way. Anyway, thank you! =)

    Thanks a lot for this tutorial! I have a question though, is there a way to render multiple renderlayers in one click like you can do in ROPs? If I'm rendering multiple layers with different mattes, forced objects etc. I don't want to come back to the file after each layer is finished. Is it possible to just merge these layers again and hit render once?

      Yes you can use fetch node at ROP level and use node by node order to render all in sequence

      Yes, Alembic is one way to do this, but there are other options as well, such as FBX and possibly the Houdini Engine (though I have not tested it yet).

      I am not into games, so I can't really say. I have not tested the FBX or Houdini Engine workflow on this, but you can give it a try on simple geo animation. maybe Houdini Engine should work.
