I am not sure that someone would like to buy property even before 100% tax is introduce. Since this might change the property market after all having big consequences.

A complex issue with several aspects: 1. There are foreigners, individuals and corporations, who buy swats of land and properties in Spain for investment. They have no intention of living there. 2. There are people, actually Spanish citizens, buying properties, only to set them up as airbnbs. The province of BC, in Canada cracked down on airbnb and it actually helped to put more condos into the market. People should be protesting aribnb's instead of squirting tourists ;-) until the government bans airbnb. 3. There is no transparency in Spain as to who buys what real estate. This information would be useful fo both government policy and citizens. 4. Next general election in Spain is in 2027, so it seems the government has started campaigning by using foreigners as scapegoats. 5. A solution would be to either for the government to make a distinction between investors and people who want a house to live, or for foreigners to become permanent residents. Don't think this new tax will pass

Everything i hear is it will never pass but i also heard from a few sources that he was “misinterpreted” and was referring to 100% increase on existing tax. (Not 100% tax on property price) Check out the Cloud Nine (real estate) podcast as they chatted about it.

Hi there, love your videos so thank you. We have a property in Villa Martin we holiday there through the year. Reference the Tax situation, I think this is very poor timing straight after the effects of brexit, I was looking to purchase a larger property in Spain but this tax situation is just the start of a downward approach towards none EU, what’s next. I have several friends who have overlooked Spain in recent years due to the difficulties that Brexit brought and now have purchased in Dubai or Florida because it’s easier. I love Spain have a place out there for over a decade and I really want to have a life there but hearing all these difficulties with visas and purchasing properties fairly makes it feel unfair. Bad idea. I get the goal, but depending on the percentage of tax (...up to 100%) it will result in anyone who pays so much for a home/apt, that they will never sell it, thus, it won't be available for sale to Spaniards. It could also accelerate an increase in value which would hurt locals. It's a long shot and would only work if it was close to 100% in Barcelona/the Islands, etc. as practically no one would buy a property. Wouldn't stop me as I'd get a residency visa and thus, I'd be a resident and exempt.

Hi Santiago and Angela, can’t really see this proposal getting passed, he’s desperate for support, there is a problem due to Spain’s economy relying apon mass tourism for decades,rising costs, low wages and high housing costs have never been addressed!!!

We are looking at different places to possibly retire. My main concern would be the Spanish gov. putting restrictions on retirees and restricting our stay visas. As we are not citizens or residents they can take away what they want when they want. We hear rumors of legislation in the Spanish parliament that is there because of property values going up for the young Spaniards and this is causing frustration for the people. We have been returning to the UK to visit relatives and love the walkability, plus the ability to travel. The trains, buses etc. are very developed there and we can get anywhere without a car. The weather is our number one drawback! I also think about the health system in Spain and how I would be able to access it. We do have private insurance that we can use but would like to explore other possibilities. Can you give me any feedback on my concerns? I am thinking of checking it out before we jump. My wife and I will be moving to Marbella in July and plan to bring our German Shepherd across. Would you be able to share how you brought Levi across to Spain? Did he come in cargo? How did he manage the layovers? We will be coming from Vancouver. It’s going to be more challenging than flying from the east coast.

Would you say it's a good place to live ? I'm thinking of teaching English over in Cartagena.

This is soooooo colonial, I feel offended. A country is not a lifestyle outlet. A country cannot be valued like a cut of meat or a car in a dealer. If you want cheap and sunny retire to Mozambique or Sierra Leona if they let you. Spain. A despised country. Everybody thinking we live on European alms, do not work and squander money. And bureaucracy. One of the PIGS. Suddenly we become paradise and are gentrified out of our homes. Come on.

You mention the city where you reside but I have never been able to catch it. Are you in Orihuela? I am planning a scouting trip and love the area you show us on your walks. I am also looking north along the coast.

One thing that interests me is if there is an expat community that interacts...like meet ups, etc.

I am glad that Spain is starting to take measures against vacation rentals. A terrible business model made for selfish and greedy people. Driving local communities out of their towns and driving up the price of housing and commodities. My country is not a business you can take advantage of. Guiris go home.

Currently, my plan is to move to Altea. Benidorm is a 1-euro tram ride, 15 minutes away so when I want to get to a bigger city, it's right there. Only problem is the crowds in the summer. Even Easter week the crowds get annoying. But it's probably annoying to have foreigners moving in for the locals.
