Classic Car Prices Are About to Change – Here’s Why
This video is about the classic car market and where I think priced are going.
With a classic car collection my size, trends in the market are hard to ignore, historically they have really worked in my favour, but I think some big changes are on the horizon for classic car prices. The big question is are we about to see them crash?
In the video we look at the classic car market long term trends

I have shared the refurb of the car on RUclips with you in a series of videos.

I agree with 90% of the analysis. Iconic cars like the Porsche 356 and Ferrari 256 will continue to rise in price. Run of the mill cars from any nation will peak , plateau, then drift downwards in terms of present value. Supply versus demand. I watch Cords and Dussenbergs sell for next to nothing today while restomonds command three times the value. I 😢am a big belivever in originality and prefer cars in original condition or restored condition. Restomods will go down in value while originality will get higher prices. Do not get rid of the MG A overhead cam car.
Thanks for your honesty
Maybe in England but in America classics are worth a fortune if they are rare, so this video is complete bullshit 😅😅😅
Very well done and to point!
I've desired these cars all my life and thought I would eventually buy some of them. But as I became fairly wealthy, I've lost the desire to have one or more. Also I much prefer owning multiple houses and spending winters down south, so any cars would be left to sit for 6 months unseen and unmaintained. OTOH I could see in 10 years we just have too much money and not enough things to spend it on. Just retired at 57. I don't even have a garage on my property yet (but my other homes do). While I am nostalgic for the 80s, a F360 appeals just for being a more liveable up to date and more comfortable and capable car than any F or P from the 80s. Instead, I would like to find an absolutely mind ~1988 Honda Accord, strangely enough.
Love your channel. I have a 1967 Morris Minor 1000 that I bought, because i loved it, I have owned it for 33 years and had a lot of fun in it. I love going to business meetings in it where everyone else is driving big BMWs or Jaguars or even Range Rovers, it breaks the ice as everyone collects around a very inexpensive old car talking about their memories of the car. You are right, the classic motorcycle market is ahead of the game partly fuelled by the many retro classic motorcycles available with 3 years warranty and disgracefully low prices. I don't have the spare cash to buy Ferrari's but maybe one day!!
I have noticed to classic car prices going down a little. I think it is a sign of the times. Every one I hear of that collects cars has fond memories of fixing up their first car when they were 13, or 9 years old. You could buy a car for 50 bucks or a few hundred and have a lot of great times. Now cars are cheap if they are under 10,000 bucks. And insurance. If you have a perfect driving record you are looking at 2k/year or more. I watched a video yesterday. Almost half the young people in the USA don't own a car. They have no plans to get one. It is 5k-10k/year they can find better places to spend/invest. Few people will collect cars they cannot afford to fix or drive. Now, with the government bodies jackboot on your neck if you own multiple cars. Petrol? We thought sky was falling when gas hit a dollar US/gallon. Now, it is over $ 8. We can't afford to drive an hour or two just for fun. I can see why short track drag racing is making a comeback. It doesn't take much fuel to drive an 1/8th of a mile.
Agree with others (BTW, I own '66 Healey 3000, '73 914 2.0, '31 Model A Ford Truck, 89 Benz 560SL, '90 Audi TQ Wagon. All at or near showroom and the one I have owned the least amount of time is the 89 Benz) and your wonderful summary statement: "Nostalgia has an expiration date". My 25 year old son and my 30 year old daughter have almost no interest in my cars. The one exception is the 914 as my daughter learned to drive in it and drove it to High School and College. There is ZERO interest in my Grandfather's '31 Ford truck that I learned to drive in and my Dad and I restored. It blows my mind. But, the evidence is right there at every classic car show I attend - everyone is getting older that attends and almost no young ones attend. Even '69 Hemi Road Runners, '66 Fast Back Mustangs at best get a yawn from my kids. They do like our his and hers Tesla Model S Plaids though. My son will not even drive my 1953 Ford Jubilee Tractor. How do you NOT want to try and drive a great classic like that? PS. If you want an MGB or MGBGT or a Porsche 928 rust free with low miles, they are very, very affordable in Southern California. Even and early beautiful interior MGB. I may just have to sell something and buy a 928.
The 50/60 year old rule won’t work for 2 very different reasons. Firstly, cars pre60s are very different to drive and that gets worse as they get older. 60 years ago an 1920s, car that needed primed to start, didn’t seem such a leap, when you were already pulling out a choke cable and had no power steering. But there is much bigger problem coming. If the world goes down the NetZero route. The kids of today when the get to 50, will only have driven electric cars that don’t have a manual gearbox. There driving licence won’t even cover them for driving a manual car from 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s. Or even the 2025. I am afraid the MGA won’t be the only thing not to hold its price.
Thanks for your insight. Another thing to take into account is comparing the de valuation to other cars. I have a C5 Corvette that is probably still worth close to what I paid for it a few years ago even with an extra 20k on the clock. If I had bought almost any other ordinary car at that time for the same amount it would be worth way less now. Own them, drive them, tinker with them and most of all, enjoy owning them.
As an owner of several classics I have them for my personal enjoyment. However as the world population has tripled in the last 80 years. There is a trend among very wealthy to invest in items other than traditional stocks and property. As such vehicles with production runs of less than 50k units that were aspirational at time of manufacture are likely to continue rising in prices. The sector that will deflate are those that are not easily used in modern traffic, obviously some pre 50's cars will still appreciate . There is a seesaw in prices associated with financial liquidity/ interest as well as the restoration/ maintenance. Take a look at automotive engineering upto 1990 engineered for engineering, post 1990 -2014 Engineered for obsolesence. 2015 on wards to meet compliance standards not designed to last more than 12-15 years. In my view a good range is the 1960's-1990's and the fewer the doors the higher the value
Old cars look pretty but they are absolute pigs to drive... we have already seen it with Vintage Cars from the 30s and 40s...They used to be expensive but now nobody wants them.
Good straight forward vid. ❤ Circumstances (health) & interests change over time. Someone once said we are only its caretaker for a bit. This is true with all sorts of things across the boards. As stated cost to own offsets any gain on classic cars. There are a few exceptions I had an aquaintence that told me that right out of HS in 74 he had the opportunity to buy a Ferrari 25O GTO for 20k. He said he didnt have the money so he bought the Tessarosa instead for 4k. In 87 he sold it at auction for 250K and bought a Tudor in Hancock pk in LA. These cars transcend the utilitarian albeit classic nature and becomes a work of art that are timeless much like a Picasso. Another aspect is that a 40s or 50 car has become obsolete. As it can not compete on the road with the more modern cars. Put a Ford Model A or 48 Lincoln Continential on the freeway? Its grocery getting days are done.
I would LOVE an AH 3000 AND an MGA. I'm 73.
Gen X & Gen Z only care about iPhones & Tiktok
In the USA they are talking about making classic cars illegal to register and drive in 2025. If they make that a reality it would destroy the classic market. I hope they take it to court and stop this madness.
I’m glad I kept my A-6 roadrunner.
Completely overlooking the fact that almost every classic car is becoming a glut of supply in the market. People are tight with money now and letting them go. NO one is buying at all right now. Price may start to decline and in come cases crash.
I think you have a valid point here, but that it's not the entire picture: The driveability of more modern classic cars is so much better that I, as a 60+ person, prefer a Porche Boxter or a BMW Z3 over any MG, Triumph and comparable classics. Secondly, current cars are soulless computers on wheels. A lot of people are already bored with EV's, and will keep driving classics for fun. The demand will never completely evaporate.
How did he find the time to look after and enjoy all these lovely cars and work? Insurance must be high too.
Very few cars that I want to own but I love to look at them ! 😂
Classic car prices are really tied to the end of the Baby Boomer population spike. There are more of these cars than you can imagine, sitting in garages and they are likely to hit the market all in the next 10 years as people die and estates must be liquidated. Case in point: I visited a gentleman who had a 60s vintage Mustang in his garage. It was his "project car" and I am sure he would go out to his garage, sit in it and dream about the day he would drive it down the road. He also felt that it was an investment. Many of these, less than perfect, cars are going to hit the market all at once and prices for all but the most well restored examples are going into the dumpster.
The E Type Jag is about art as much as it is about automotive. They are gorgeous and will not be losing value any time soon. Your analysis is pretty spot on.
Youve got a good point there about the 50-60 year old car my Fiat is a 1978 and going to fall into that soon. My opinion on your collection, repectfully, you dont have the sort after models thats where the money is pay more and gain more, my opinion
Classic car pricing took out of the hobby years ago. 8-10k for a rusted shell is insane.
You are spot on, well stated analysis.
gonna plummet man...its just old tech and junk
My younger son, age 35, really likes his 1991 3-series BMW sedan (5-speed stick), and the elder one, 40, still drives the near-classic 2002 Audi A4 Quattro (also 5-speed stick) I bought him as a university graduation present in 2007.
This is a very accurate analysis and quite correct. Nostalgia is the single biggest factor is rising prices.
Young people will be learning to drive in electric cars. They will not be aware of how to operate a manual, gearbox and clutch and therefore they will not be covered to drive one their license. This may have a knock on effect on desirability and values.
Yes and no. You are not taking into account how ugly, boring, and ridiculously expensive brand new cars have got, including sport cars and super cars, and when it comes for example to mid-range super cars people are already switching to buy something from a few years ago rather than brand new, not because of nostalgia, but because slightly older cars are genuinely more exciting and also less expensive. However the problem moving forward will be regulations.
I appreciate that you built a "replica" or a "kit car" Cobra. I don't appreciate that you didn't disclose that in the title of this video. You made it sound like you had built an original.
Stocks bonds houses cars. Everybody has a view, and nobody has a clue.
Early 911s are another exception.
The market will move with some investors and car lovers. To make some money you should invest in one or three high value cars. I am more on the car lovers side with passion for „bread and butter“ classics mostly. 12 cars is a lot but I have only one butt to drive it and now I have to share it with my new hobby…classic motorbikes 😞. Please help 😄
With tongue firmly planted in cheek he said, "Certainly the market for your cars would be much greater if the steering wheels were not on the 'wrong' side."
Friendly tip...talk with your mouth and not your hands. I feel like I am playing Ping Pong listening to you.
As a 46 year old car nut I remember coveting certain cars as a kid and watching all the 80’s shows where the car was the star. Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard etc. Do the younger generation really have the same passion for cars? What cars are being produced nowadays that will become the automotive icons of the future? The classic car crash might not happen soon but the distant future looks pretty bleak.
The demand for these cars will come to an end and their values will continually diminish. Out ahead, there is a generation of buyers who care nothing of ICE cars and demand for them will fall off a cliff once the old timers who loved these cars have passed on.
If you are buying to make money and hanging on to these cars, forget about it; you still have rego insurance body rust and storage problems. Buy guitars; they are a way better investment and they never go out of style and don't take up that much space.
I sure hope the market plummets so people under 50 might actually have a chance of affording a classic
Can’t wait to get a 67 Camaro or firebird
The cars I lusted after as a youth were already skyrocketing by time I graduated from college. Meanwhile I was saving money for a house and paying bills and the cars just kept getting more expensive. Hmmm… let’s see, pay for kid’s college tuition or buy a classic car. Let’s get real, owning a classic car is boujee AF.
Hot Wheels and Matchbox will crash?
Different generation coming though with little interest in cars.
Nothing new, it's always been a strange market, up down and the fact that interested byers are getting older. Now cars from the 70:s and 80:s are getting hotter.....the older ones with few exceptions not so.
Truer words never said. Try being an older boomer who prefers and owns cars of the '30s and '40s. Most people my age, let alone those in their 40s and 50s, haven't the education, cultural exposure, nor perspective to appreciate such automobiles.
Add to all the factors previously mentioned the newer phenomenon that cars manufactured in the last 15 years are much harder to work on and have features that, when they break, are virtually impossible to repair. Thus a new "stability of demand" will seep into the classic car market where even gen Z buyers may seek out older cars whether or not they knew them in their youth.
Stop walking toward the camera, it is irritating.😂
