More Food + Thermal Mass Planning for Winter
We're less then a month away for our first frost here in Colorado, so it's time for us to start taking precaution for winter. I know this winter will go better for our wormingtons because they won't be in the garage, but I would love to limit the casualties from the cold this year. My plan is to help build up the thermal mass in our Urban Worm Bag to help get enough matter in the bin that has elements being broken down to help keep the the temperature up.

It's Been 2 Weeks - Have the ENC Worms Eaten Their Banana Peels?
Просмотров 56Месяц назад
Turns out yes, they have been working away on the banana peels from last week! I can't tell if there is just too many worms and not enough banana peels, so hopefully this second feeding of banana peels will serve as food for the worms that aren't already part of the big worm ball. In the meantime, I'm trying to decide what to do about filling up the bin! With winter not too far away, I want to ...
Too soon for another feeding? I think not! Trying something the ENCs haven't had yet!
Просмотров 268Месяц назад
I know, it feels like we just fed the worms! And boy oh boy were they busy. I love being able to tell who's in the pile. The ENC worms are much bigger and stand out, but getting to still see the red wigglers are there in the mix is such a relief. I hope their population bounces back in full force over the next few months. In the meantime, I'm so glad this check in went well for only having been...
July 2024 Colorado Renters Container Garden Tour - Magidome, Blueberries Maker Pipe Shade
Просмотров 1402 месяца назад
July has blown by so fast! I have to say, this year I was treated to the joys of picking fresh raspberries daily as little sweet treats throughout the day, and it is a new favorite of mine. I hope to continue to grow them for years to come. Meanwhile, our blueberries are off to a rocky start. I hope when I get to the August garden tour they will be doing better. Meanwhile, the Magidome has surv...
2 Weeks - Feeding Check In for our ENCs in their Urban Worm Bag - Summertime Feedings!
Просмотров 982 месяца назад
These new European Nightcrawlers (ENCs) are just crushing it lately! In 2 weeks there isn't an ounce of food left, and I cannot be more thrilled. This week's feeding has more food, as opposed to last weeks which we saw in today's check in, that had a bunch of avocado shells mixed in for facilitating more wormballs, and hopefully more cocoons soon! Next feeding we are going to try and get some b...
ENC's are Hungry Hungry Worms! Another great feeding!

It's crazy how well these ENC's are doing in their Urban Worm Bag compared to the struggles of our red wigglers. In 3 weeks they have demolished the last feeding, and I'm optimistic they will continue this trend over the remaining few weeks of summer. 💡 I now have my own collection of Garden and House Flags and Outdoor UV/Water Resistant Pillows designed by me! mymindinai.etsy.com 🪱Worms at Wor...
Best First Worm Feeding Ever (in CO) - Checking ENC's First Feeding Progress
Просмотров 3673 месяца назад
These ENCs are off to an amazing start! In about 3 weeks they have absolutely demolished the food I gave them for their first feeding, so much so I could barely even tell where they were fed. We'll see how their next round goes, but I'm optimistic they will be hearty eaters, at least through the summer. We'll check in on them in a few weeks and see how they do for their 2nd feeding. 💡 I now hav...
June 2024 Garden Tour + MagiDome Update - We made it through the last frost date!
Просмотров 263 месяца назад
We have plants that lived through our first full winter! How about that! Lots of super tiny seedlings that are trying to get established, and hopefully we'll have great growth to update you on in July. As a renter, the container garden is what we have to work with, and we're making the most of it. In 2024, we're focusing on flowers, especially pollinator friendly plants whenever possible. And a...

I hope in 2034 I can give everyone a great update on these trees! They are small saplings, but the information that the Arbor Day Foundation shared about them will hopefully make it easier to take care of them for many years to come. I'll share updates on these little saplings in garden tour videos, so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on their progress. 💡 I now have my own collecti...
First Feeding with our European Nightcrawlers In Our Urban Worm Bag - Basement Worms
Просмотров 844 месяца назад
These poor worms are having a heck of a time. First a cross country trip, now thunderstorms and hail outside. I'm hoping we can get them feeling like their at home with some food, especially sugary fruit. Since we haven't had issues with flies yet- I'm not covering this feeding up too much. This is a lot of food, but there are 2 pounds of ENC (European Nightcrawlers) in here, plus whatever red ...
DIY Self Watering Urn Planter - Renter Friendly Upcycle

I love a Goodwill find, and scoring a $20 urn is absolutely a win. Having watched a ton of videos by Gardening with Leon, I knew I could make my own self watering container right here in this urn. Sure, there's not a draining hole but we can make it work. Here's hoping in a few months time this urn is not just surviving, but thriving in the heat of Colorado summer. This is a great project for r...

We have a lot of learning to do with ENC's in the coming months, but I'm excited to see how they do in the basement conditions that ten...
Moving Day for the Worms - Back to their Urban Worm Bag

Have these worms had a rough time! First in the UWB in the garage, which nearly froze them all to death this winter despite our best efforts. Time will tell how they do, but I’m optimistic they will do better here. Originally, I was ...
Planting Our Jelly Bean Blueberries by Bushel and Berry - Homemade Potting Mix Experiment

Here’s hoping we didn’t make a terrible mistake mixing our own potting mix. This particular blend we are trying is focused on primarily a compost and coconut coir blend, to help keep the soils acidic for our new berry plants. First Worm Ball in Colorado - Urban Worm Bag Day 100
That feeding should help moisten up that bedding, Alessandra. ~ Sandra
Good wormies!
The poly should last for more than one season. If it doesnt i`d recommend installing some lock channel and wiggle wire to make it easier to replace. Digging out a gazillion staples is no fun at all :) The lock channel can be used to hold external shade cloth in the summer..The place you bought the poly sells stainless lock channel which will last forever but its not cheap.
Hi Alessandra, so great to see the worms gathering together and multiplying! If it was my bin, I would bury some of that packing paper so that it's exposed to the moisture and microbes of the bin and breaks down. I'm not a big fan of coconut coir as a bedding or carbon source. I totally hear you on having to garden before we lose the light each day! ~ Sandra
A white colored wood stain is the best choice, especially if you are covering with poly. Dark stained wood covered with poly could top 150F in the sun :)
A good idea for next time! We easily cleared 130F this summer even with the door flap opened and several holes in the poly.
@@gardeningwithalessandra8477 The surface temperature of the wood will get a lot hotter than the greenhouse air temperature :) A IR thermometer is very handy for checking surface temperatures.
Large equilateral triangles made from foil bubble insulation attached to the inner frame using magnets. The magnets make it quick and easy to put them on and take them off.
What a great idea! Thank you!
@@gardeningwithalessandra8477 Button type rare earth magnets are the best choice. Drill a slightly undersized hole and press fit the magnets into the struts so they are flush.. Use foil tape to fix and encapsulate the magnets on the triangle panels. This method also works well for attaching exterior shade cloth.
I set up this system with 4 city pickers and the earth box watering system… but the automatic watering doesn’t seem to shut off. Water just keeps pouring out the overflow holes on the city pickers. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Hmm I would take a level to the boxes and put it on there and see if they are off. Sometimes just rearranging a little of the dirt below and recentering makes a big difference!
Hi Alessandra, we are in the midst of moving houses - well, we've packed up a lot of our house and put our house up for sale, but we don't have anywhere to go or a date yet! You reminded me that we will have a lot of packing paper by the end of this process. I hope to give a lot of our moving boxes and packing paper away to someone else who is starting a move, but I'm sure my worms will get some of it. I've learned through all of this (combining worm bins, drastically changing worm bin location, etc.), that worms are very resilient and adaptable. ~ Sandra
What an exciting time! What are you going to do with your worms while you move? Or are you starting over?
I sent some of them to our new area with my sister. The rest I combined into just a few totes and have them here while our house is for sale. I moved them all outdoors, though, so I'm sure it was a bit of a shock for the worms! ~ Sandra
Aww well they probably are just happy to be able to go with you when the time comes. Plus you never know, maybe a little shake up will get them wiggling around and making you worm babies to expand the tribe!
Enjoying the videos, following closely!
Well thank you very much, so glad you're here :)
Hi Moose and Wally . To help passively keep the dome warm in winter put jugs of water inside early in the morning and let the sun warm it , At night the water releases its warmth into the dome.
Aww thanks, Dee! I had some around the bases of my planters last year, and I think it helped, but we kept finding that even with them half full, if they were expanding and contracting every day the plastic was cracking! I think because the temperature shift was too much. But I have a bunch anyways from my humidifier so it can't hurt to try again. Hope you are having a great summer!
Wow, your UWB is really filling up! I was told by the person who gave me my ENC's that they really like calcium, so they get a lot of powdered egg shells. I even gave them some chicken bones! No sign of crawling on the walls of your UWB despite the storms, so they must be happy. ~ Sandra
Ohh that's interesting, I wonder what type of soil they must have done well in where there was calcium. I have some old dog bones the pups have gnawed I need to get rid of, maybe I'll toss them in for a slow work down!
I have been following you for well over a year now and adore your videos!
Well thank you so much, I sure am glad you are here and enjoying the videos! :) Alessandra
Yay! I'm glad 99% of your ENC's settled in and got down to work. I wouldn't know if any of my baby ENC's escaped because the bin is an open tote and outside. It's only a few feet from my compost pile, so if they do crawl out, they will have a place to go. I've heard this species can really eat a lot, so both of us should be able to get rid of all our food scraps this summer! ~ Sandra
I sure do hope so! I have such a hard time with our composting tumblers, they dry out even though I am sometimes watering them with the hose daily! At least your ENCs have a nice compost pile to migrate to if they decide to roam :D Have you been finding they eat a ton so far?
They've only had one regular feeding so far, which they demolished. Honestly, I need to get out there more often. I give them in-progress leaf mold and compost as bedding, so that should keep them happy 😉 ~ Sandra
Such a learning curve to change gardening zones, but you are finding ways that work to build your garden. The perennial tower is a great idea. We got reflective, metallic 2" wide tape that keeps most birds from our berries (used aluminum pie plates or take out containers work too). ~ Sandra
Oh wow that is so smart, I need to try that. Thankfully I've not had too many issues with the raspberries, just our strawberries so far. I hope your garden is doing well this summer!
I'm sorry your worms had a bit of a rough transition. The berries should be a big hit. I get my Euros next week. I'm getting juveniles, so I hope they behave! ~ Sandra
Oh my I didn't know you can buy them specifically at different stages. I had to do some light training, the first few nights we had a few wanderers in the carpet. I hope yours are behaving for you!
Beautiful urn remade into something more functional, Alessandra. Do you expect to get much settling? ~ Sandra
Thanks, Sandra! I'm optimistic it will hold up this summer. To answer your question, I watered as I filled the soil and then did a heavy soaking after and I think we are in the clear for settling. We'll see as the rainy summer days pick up 🤞
I'm so happy your new home has a spot to start your rose garden again. I remember your Florida roses were lovely. ~ Sandra
Me too! Several locals I’ve spoken with here and there say butterfly gardens aren’t really a big thing here so I figured at least I can still have my roses. Plus I get to learn new varieties!
The only worms a dog should have, lol! I'm getting some ENC cocoons in a couple weeks. It will be my first try with this species. Hope we both get good results! ~ Sandra
That's so exciting! I can't wait to see how your experience goes. I didn't light train mine and have had about 10 make a run for it. Some I found before they died, others I missed. We've been having thunderstorms too so I'm not sure if that's bothering them with the pressure change.
You need to mix it everyday and stop adding more food. Fill the rest of the bin with browns not more food.
Great point about mixing every day! I haven't tried this since we moved but I'll keep that in mind for next time ☺️
That was a big project, Alessandra. I hope you see lots of cocoons hatching as the temperature warms. ~ Sandra
I hope so too!
I would add some coffee grounds to heat it up.
That's a great idea! Thank you!
Looks like your little raspberry came through the winter just fine! I'm going to look for dwarf berry varieties that will grow here. We're moving away from our home with inground berries and probably switching to a lot more container gardening. ~ Sandra
I was shocked they made it! I'll let you know how the new Raspberry shortcake variety does. It sounds like the whole Bushel and Berry line (sold by a few vendors!) are made for containers, so hopefully you can try some of them when it's time.
Great sleuthing finding varieties that suit your climate, Alessandra. Nothing better than picking fresh berries first thing in the morning for breakfast! ~ Sandra
That's the dream! I loved getting fresh strawberries from the yard, I can't help but try and expand our collection of berries....now to keep the birds away!
Hi Alessandra, so great that you salvaged some of your worm population! My red wigglers can live outdoors here on Vancouver Island, with a range of about -5°C(23°F) to 33°C (95°F) in an average year. I don't think your basement temperatures would pose a problem. My understanding is they would just eat less! One of the published studies on worm research I reviewed kept the red wigglers at 11°C (51°F), so it's definitely doable for that variety. Maybe your low humidity would pose challenges in the UWB. The totes seem to be holding their own. Yay! ~ Sandra
That gives me hope, thank you Sandra! I think I got so spoiled with them being ferocious little eaters in our warm and humid Florida UWB that I just want them to be back to that ASAP :D Time will tell if they can stay cozy and start reproducing.
New subscriber here Thank you for your support
Welcome to the community! Glad to have you :)
❤
Thanks for the love!
I ordered my Meyer lemon and blood orange. Perfect!
I hope you love them! I've given them a call to ask questions about particular situations and they've been super helpful.
What is the purple flowered butterfly plant called? And where did you find your screen house? Thank you
In Florida all the nursery's called it "butterfly bush". It comes in several purples/pinks. We were renting that house.
Hi Alessandra, those strawberry juices will drip through the paper pretty soon. I bet you find a bunch of worms huddled under the paper in a week! ~ Sandra
I'd be happy with any worms :D
Look forward to you restarting the uwb. I'm worry about dryness on top and wetness at bottom as well. Currently, i keep the bottom cover off (to allow some air and dryness to occur), and cover the top with plastic bubble wrap, seems to keep the top more moist. Give it a try if you think that might help you with your uwb, would love to see how it works out for you.
Thanks for the tips! I've been a little hesitant to keep the lids off because they are so close to where the dogs nap- don't want anyone getting curious and going in for a snack while we're not looking :D But they'll be back in the UWB soon and much happier I'm sure.
Great idea! I have my first greenstalk and was trying to come up with DIY watering with what I already have. Maybe adding shut off valves within your irrigation network so you turn watering off and on to the rest of your gardens and can focus watering to greenstalks only to get higher pressure. I use shut off valves a lot to adjust watering by plant type.
Such a great idea! I am actually looing and reinstalling these in my new Colorado garden and thinking of installing them top to bottom, instead of bottom to top, to help with water pressure. I hope you love the greenstalks!
We usually keep about a month of worm slush in the freezer and everythig elese goes into an outdoor compost pile.
That's smart! I've got a 2nd compost tumbler up and running now, hopefully we can keep it warm until summer.
I’m so glad you were able to save some worms and get them inside. They’ll repopulate before you know it.
I hope so! Thanks for the encouragement :)
I think those bins are going to surprise you, Alessandra! I would leave the lids off. I also wouldn't worry about 60° - they will be fine. ~ Sandra
I hope so! Thanks for always being so encouraging!
Survivors 👏
Right?! :D I wanted to give them all the yummy watermelon as treats, but then I had the good sense to not do that until there are more then 10 of them! Hope 2024 is treating you well!
Ay yai yai...How not to do it...Temperature aside, you need a better plan, perhaps Larger Sheets of Paper on the top!!!
Yes! Many improvement possibilities for sure. I don't want to discard the heat mats just yet, but for sure need something to help insulate the bag as a whole. We'll figure it out :)
Hi just an idea of to help keep your worms warm if you can get hold of some polystyrene and make it so it covers the four sides and the bottom and then use cardboard to cover that then it should insulate it for you. Hope this helps.
Great idea! I bet I can get some from the hardware store. Thanks for the idea :)
I definitely was cheering when you found the first piece of avocado with the mini worm ball, Alessandra! Maybe the water was warmer than the bedding when you poured it in, so the worms followed the moisture and the warmth downwards. I'm so happy a group of them found conditions in which they could survive. With that number of worms, you are sure to have lots of cocoons in that bedding. ~ Sandra
I certainly hope so! I am optimistic there are more in there then I could see with the hurried eye. They will bounce back and hopefully by this time next year I have a new and improved plan :D We hit several nights sub 0 F which makes me think there's really no way they are going to survive in the garage without serious intervention in the future. We'll come up with something :)
That is a bummer. I'm sorry to see this happened.
An unfortunate situation to be sure, but all part of the learning process. Hope you are doing well :)
Our weather has been crazy cold here, too, Alessandra. We got down to -11°C (12.2°F) a few nights ago. That's unheard of! Luckily, I had some gentle compost action happening in my outdoor bins, so they stayed toasty. I think those seed mats are going to suck the moisture out of your system, unfortunately. Good luck! ~ Sandra
You are right- they took all the lovely moisture at the top of the bin. I thought you got much colder temps for some reason, but 12F is certainly no worms best friend. I'm glad you have some residual compost heat helping keep them comfy.
My little corner of Vancouver Island has a Mediterranean climate - not too hot and not too cold (usually)! We are gardening Zone 9b, but the crazy cold snap we experienced will cause a few of our tender plants to suffer. ~ Sandra
You're building an igloo! How cool is that. We have a very small space heater that comes on in our greenhouse when temperatures drop. If you don't want to go that far, you could even plug in a seed heating mat, that's a very low-voltage solution to just give a bit of supplemental heat. With the amount of insulation on your dome, it would retain the heat quite well. ~ Sandra
So excited to see how my little igloo evolves! I haven't been inside but have been monitoring the overnight temps, and I think I need to add some extra layers of plastic inside at the top before I do anything. I think I'm losing some heat there that is a relatively easy fix.
Great idea, Alessandra! That's odd that the temperature dipped colder inside the dome. I don't think I've ever found that with my greenhouse. Although, I measured the temperature of my worm bedding in the greenhouse and they were colder than the air temperature. So maybe humidity has something to do with it? We have a little space heater in our greenhouse now. It comes on if temperatures dip below 5°C (41°F). ~ Sandra
Oh 100% I think the humidity has something to do with it, but to what extent I don't know. I've been doing some research on space heaters and have a few lined up. But I'm also thinking about just using my little seedling mats I got for the worms since we are obviously not using those for a bit :D
So awesome very inspiring
Thanks so much!
Thank you for your great insight and information.we are so appreciative as inspired
Glad it was helpful!
I see you and I both wear shorts year round, Alessandra! Somebody was really thinking when they invented that zipper. Wow. ~ Sandra
People are so clever :) It's been holding up so well too, even in the freezing temps. Happy New Year!!
Happy New Year to you, too! ~ Sandra
I'm so glad you mentioned that you were going to show us how you make a door! Another idea for the future would be to add tiles or paving stones on the floor inside (I'm not sure if it already has them). They will heat up with any radiant heat and stop your greenhouse from getting as cold on those winter nights. ~ Sandra
That is so true! Between all the rocks on the ground and some extra thick pavement stones on top, that will probably help a ton. Our work is never done in the garden :D
You're making good progress before the snow flies! ~ Sandra
Thank you! We're trying! I've been doing a lot of research about insulation/warming options and have some ideas rolling.
Excellent information! Great website.Appreciate the additional discount! So many possibilities 😊
I'll be happy if it helps keep my container trees alive :)
Hey Alessandra, Gilligan's worms do quite well through the winter at 60-65°F. If you're worried it's going to get colder, could you wrap the outside in Christmas lights? I know what you mean about dry cold. We used to live in Alberta! Take care, ~ Sandra
Wow! That is so impressive Gilligan is maintaining that temperature. You know, I think I have a few bundles of non-LED Christmas lights I saw recently. Now I gotta remember where I put them :D
I second Gary's wow, Alessandra! Not only is the dome architecturally pleasing, it's going to greatly extend what you can do in your garden. By the way, we often find it's cheaper to rent tools if we only need them short term. ~ Sandra
Oh that is so smart, Sandra! I didn't think to rent them. I have been keeping an eye out at estate sales and such for any tools. Not that I know what most of them do, but you never know :D
