Great stuff! I use Hornet VU too. Gain staging isn’t just about headroom, but also consistency from mix to mix, and most importantly preserving your balance of your static mix. Your entire signal chain should be at your unity target (e.g. -18dbfs), with your faders being only used for balancing elements of the mix.

Informative video. Just wondering, why do you double some things like the druns? Is it the exact same pattern and you're using a different kit to thicken things out? Also the vocals. Wouldnt it be a bit of a mess with 2 lots of vocals, or are they singing the exact same thing and again, just thicken things out? I also find in my mixes that panning hard left and right (like a rhythm guitar left and the exact same right, just a different guitar. It really gives a thick rich sound and panning hard left and right makes it sound like its comming from the centre. I think people forget that. It tricks your ears, but leaves space for drums and vocals up the centre but gives your mix heaps of space). I also use every bit of space in panning, even if some things are very close (like panning at 38 then 42 for another instrument) because it gives space to a mix. I feel the space is there so it should be used. If you use the LRC, it muddies up a mix as there will ALWAYS be overlap in frequencies you just cant get rid of, so using your panning space fixes that. When done correctly it really sound interesting, spacious and clear.

Thank you for your video! Im in Aussie land and it is great to have found your video on this subject. I was struggling on if I should remove the balancing plug in. Now I know to just calibrate the gain level to the same level and then remove it. Great stuff!! I have just upgraded to 2022.4 Protools which is the now 'ultimate' version at a cheaper price. So I am just coming to terms with the gain feature on this DAW.
