Making a desktop injection molding machine for plastic recycling - TARS
This video was made ahead of the application for the James Dyson Award. A Big thank you to everyone who supported this project along the last 6 years. A special thank you to my friend Benni who ran this project with me until Summer of 2021. It is nice to see all of it come together in this video and I hope this project can create an impact. Thank you for watching!
For those of you who know the movie Interstellar also get the name reference. TARS is my favorite robot and always helped the astronauts when hard work needed to be done. This is sort of the same what this machine does to the user when it comes to recycling plastic waste. Sort of ;)

This Video documents my 8 Day biketrip from Schopfheim to Pisa.. I made this tour in August 2021. Prior to this trip, I built a small bicycle rig so I could have the drone running while I am on the bike. Not really sure if that was legal^^. I hope you enjoy the view and the video! Cheers, Manuel

This is great. A 3D printer and a desktop injection molding machine will make a setup way cooler than having a 3D printer alone.

instead of screws, try using soft foam pads so you don't have to do anything manually after inserting the board, self adjusting to a degree

Nice idea. Did you ever heard of „Solid state dehumidifiers“? I think this would be even better as your silicon dehumidifier pearls. They are way more expensive (like 20 Euros per Membrane), but as you don’t have to exchange the silicon bags regularly anymore.

Cool project, you should look into making a pelletizer Injection molds are insanely expensive currently and I only need so many egg cups. having plastic pellets means you can use that new pellet extruder by that greenboy guy.

I think the answer to "why not change that" is that its much cheaper and more efficient to do it on a large scale. Sort of the reason factories exist. This is super cool though!

The way to make this successful is to make this as low cost as possible. If you don't do this from the start, your machine will be pirated in China before you even begin producing them. The most important thing is to be as cost competitive with China as possible. If this is not your number 1 concern, you will absolutely lose. I cannot stress this enough.

I love the idea. The only issue I see with it is similar to those with traditional injection molding: you need highly specialized molds that are usually quite expensive. Have you ever considered creating a simpler application of this technology, like a 3D filament maker or something along those lines? If so, what made you choose an injection molder? Congrats on this machine. It looks extremely clean and well-thought-out.

looks like your injectionsmold machine needs some more injection pressure and or some vents to remove the airpockets. It is quite typical to have injection pressures of over 1000 bar on products like this (this is quite hard to reach but i think it might be good to know). also all injectionmold machines keep pressure on the material after injection to move the last bits of plastic in the mold. the vents are typicaly small gaps on the closure faces these are about 0.01 or 0.03 mm depending on the materials used. you can contact me if you want to know more i have few years experiance in mold and die making and can operate a industial injection mold machine. it is really cool what you made tho

Hi Manuel is amazing what you did. I am working on an other machine will produce mushrooms on low scale. For big scale there are many on market. Can i ask you how you heat up the interior of the flakes? This problem still not have solved as need heat up also an cylinder with water in it. Will be so happy if you can give me a link or idea how made. Thanks so much

Man I'm grateful for my algo serving this up! Dude this tech is amazing, well done. Imagine this being implemented into kitchen cabinetry one day, even including the plastic shredder. Rather than putting my plastic bottle into the recycling, I clean it up and put it straight into your machine. So cool, well done again.
