Canadians are invited to take part in the National Day of Honour on May 9. The Government of Canada has set aside this day to mark the end of our country's military mission in Afghanistan. A national ceremony on Parliament Hill will pay tribute to the fallen, the sacrifices of the wounded, and the special burden borne by families. Canadians will be invited to honour the legacy of these heroes with a national moment of silence.

With an introduction by BGen Denis Thompson, commander of CANSOFCOM, this nine minute documentary highlights the actions of the First Special Service Force (FSSF) during the battle for Mount La Difensa in Italy during the Second World War. I am experienced in guerrilla warfare. Many of our marches were conducted at night, across rugged terrain, with little or no illumination and sometimes even in stormy weather. All of them are very difficult already and all of that mixed into one and with the addition of a well-fortified and heavily-armed enemy. Wowww!!! Very impressive!

In around 1967, I worked with a veteran who had been a member of this unit. He was proud of it and told me about Monte Casino. But he also mentioned that many of the survivors had a hard time after the war.

Bernd, shame on me for not finding this before now. I'm at La Difensa in my project. Amazingly, I'm ALSO using Jack Callowhill as the on camera narrator!! I went to his home. Having him on location looks so good! This is as good a definitive piece as I can imagine. Congrats, and thanks agin for your continued inspiration.

I'm sorry to say this but we need a proper honour guard for such ceremonies. This was a rag tag group . Why don't we a National Honour Guard every other Country has one. I appreciate the message though.

Can someone please explain to me what we were doing in Afghanistan in the first place? How many Canadians, Afghans, and other NATO soldiers died over some piece of dirt that the Taliban, or other war lords/drug lords, will reclaim the second that NATO is gone? I feel sorry for the lives lost and their loved ones that will never see them again. Despite the best intentions, all this was because NATO has to justify it's existence, since it's raison-d'etre, the Soviet Union, disappeared 25 years ago.

My dad was in WWII., I feel so proud we have men who want to protect Canada like my dad did. I feel bad for the soldiers who lost their lives and their families who have to cope with losing a loved one. God bless the Soldiers. Keep them home safe and sound now.
