How To Fix Overwatch's Tank Problem

Again, correct me if i interpreted ur video the wrong way

    • @Blake-Householder
      @Blake-Householder 6 дней назад

      @@Smoke14568 Yeah, I would say that's a good understanding. Tanks aren't (can't!) be good at running around assassinating people (otherwise they basically cease to be tanks, and my joke about 4v4 dps/support becomes reality). Since they can't run around everywhere, there has to be more reason to come fight them, and they have to be better at getting kills (so tank players enjoy themselves). Right now, a tank is good at repelling people, but they can mostly just walk away from a fight with a tank if it's not going well. Your point about responsibility is correct, I don't have a good solution for that. I don't think tanks can simultaneously be very impactful but also the players aren't responsible for the game's outcome. (I don't think that's possible in any game, really)

    i think you are very young. But lets clear this up. When you get hired, you are offering your time and skill for a salary, a set amount of money. THAT is the deal. if you dont like the deal, you dont have to take it...but its pretty idiotic to take the deal and then complain that you are not getting more money or kudos or whatever. It is part of the contract that the work you do will be of good quality, in a timely manner. If the job said that being on call might be a part of it, then its unetical to do what you describe. And software engineers are no different than the rest of us. People who build car parts are creating more value in the sum then the individual components. i have worked for 25 years, and in most companies there is a bonus structure tied to corporate financial and non financial goals. Additionally, if you get patents or other over the board things accomplished there is usually some kind of reward, bonus, etc.

    I do like the idea behind it and I agree it creates a motive for putting in extra work or just doing a better job. But on the other side it can lead to people finding loopholes, other people patching those loopholes and the whole thing getting overregulated and really tedious. Like your example with the supporters getting paid for solving more tickets. They might find a way to create more easy tickets to get higher numbers, while not actually improving anything for the company. So you'd need a way to measure the quality of their solutions. But then some people only get easy tickets where there`s not much depth to measure quality. And so on. In some regions it makes sense, but it`s not something I would universally apply.

    • @Blake-Householder
      @Blake-Householder Месяц назад

      I think you're more addressing "pick a metric and pay people for improving that metric". I agree they will try to game it. But what I'm advocating for is more like "make the metric be long-term profitability" so gaming it looks exactly the same as maximizing value creation. So something more like "pay support agents for the uplift in sales we see between a random cohort and the cohort of people they've supported" would be appropriate

    Although you started out with the analogy of a widget factory you quickly turned your attention to software engineers. The principles you talk about could apply equally well to engineers designing physical means of production, like pieces of manufacturing equipment or whole production lines, as well as to other production-related intellectual property, like the selection of process steps for effecting chemical and physical changes to materials in a chemical plant. The question that needs to be answered about incentive systems in all these areas is this: How does quality of the job come in, both short and long term? If you get an immediate piece of the action that your work product enables, isn’t it in your interest to produce as much as possible as quickly as possible? What if your software product is awkwardly designed and requires lots of continuing maintenance? What if you didn’t think about the environment where your widget stamper was going to operate and it quickly corroded? What if you designed a plant around a quick-and-dirty series of process steps to synthesize a chemical and a competitor drove you out of business with a better-thought-out low-cost process? You don’t have to hit a home run every time, and if you have a lot of at-bats you’ll do just fine. Just my two cents. Anyway, thanks for the thought-provoking video.

      I think the SFT40 is a lot less impressive than a CULPM1.TG. The 8A driver generates too much heat too fast. It's good as a hotrod kind of flashlight, but "EDC" implies you'll be using it for 10 minutes at a time, and the 8A driver will seriously cook your hand or step down too much.

    I don't know how much experience you have other than Google, but the webapps I develop I have to validate on AT LEAST three browsers, more if it's a mobile app. I find it disconcerting that Google doesn't... It also explains a lot... I don't buy into the conspiracy (or at least not into THAT conspiracy; RUclips makes it pretty clear they are actively working to hinder adblockers), but at the very least it's shoddy QA practices... In this particular case people pointed fingers at RUclips because when you switched your user-agent to spoof chrome, the issue disappeared. It's more likely that they were targeting Firefox to test a new script to block adblockers and that the script itself caused the delay. By that logic, that bug should have been found even in Chrome if anyone bothered to test multiple user-agents...

    • @Blake-Householder

      Well, it depends on what you mean by "validate". We had automated tests on Chrome, Firefox, and IE, but also crash logging that worked on anything. So if errors spiked, we would always see, even if it was like Konqueror or something weird. The QA was, like everywhere, both trying hard and not remotely enough. Once your site is large and complicated enough, you'll almost always end up serving slightly different JS to everyone, it's a practice that shouldn't even raise an eyebrow, but most people casting aspersions on the "switch user-agent" thing probably haven't worked anywhere where it becomes necessary.

    It's so easy to fall back on a tech-company conspiracies to explain every bug or shortcoming you encounter. If you can cite the all-encompassing Deep-State power of Google (or Microsoft or whomever) you don't have to worry about the lack of evidence for these decades-long sabotage programs, and you don't have to consider any alternate explanations based on the details of how programmers actually work within tech companies. Thanks for this detailed and informative discussion of these issues.

    Such reasonable analysis. Thanks!

    Before FireBug, Mozilla had a JS debugger called Venkman. I could never get it to work.

      I remember that! I think I got it to "run", but not show me any events. It sure looked promising.

    And I have to disagree about the CD getting so hot it burns you in ten seconds. Also about their button being hard. And if you need a lower output for walking around your neighborhood, you can set it to Hi/Low or Low/High. If their programming mode is too difficult for some, I just don’t have words. I’ll make a video testing your temperature and hard button claims.

      My daughter provides a good test case for this. After a few tens of seconds, she'll drop the Cloud because it got too hot. Similarly, she has to use both hands to push the button. If you want to tough it out, that's fine, but I like my products to feel easy to use. I have an MCH 2.0, is that programmable? I've never tried. For temp, I think the thermal camera shows it pretty well, but feel free to test.

      @@Blake-Householderi did. Guess we have two complete different experiences. Odd way to judge switch pressure but who am I to judge. Keep it up.
