I think I am mostly done with skiing but I have to say, Bear Valley has the best powder set up in California. No waiting in line hours before the first chair starts moving. One critical condition, it has to be a large/deep low elevation dump. 2 feet of fluff is perfect. ( the parking lot at bear valley is at mid mountain.) What they typically do is keep the lower mountain closed until 10:30 or 11:00. ( All the good stuff is on the lower mountain.) So the powder hounds hit their favorite upper mountain stashes. The runs are short with not that much pitch. However you must never forget!.....Always keep your eyes on the Grizzly bowl and snow valley gates. When they open up you are in for the time of your life! Wide open bowls, rolling drops, gullies, trees, cliffs, side hill, willow forest, rock gardens, steeps, hikes, traverses and powder runs that will last the the whole day. Your legs will be burning and believe it or not you will not even mind the slow double chair back up. I have a video I should post but it shows some "secret" spots, like end of the day fresh track type runs that I don't want to spoil. Hint, if you study the trail map and follow the rules you may be able to figure it out. If you happen to hit Bear Valley on one of these special days, you will be telling your grand kids about that one day....
