Love the 16e footage
more sequences of 858 and 857 on following videos including double heading from de Aar
The QJ-Series, the engines that ran china up until the early 2000s.
Finally, a video featuring a working Class 16E
You will find 858 featured quite a lot on later videos plus one sequence of 857 and 858 double heading freight from de Aar to Kimberley during first great steam festival.
Lovely sections on the Knysna run, especially the double heading. Thank you for sharing
人民型の客車列車が素晴らしい!
Gorgeous shots and sounds from the Kynsna branch as a mixed service - especially with the older passenger stock. Thanks so much for sharing!
Another comment - yes I know about Garrets - such power over long kilometers(miles?) for generations!
Oh wow! Am ancient - so will just enjoy 😅 and keep steaming - Doreen
Are more videos coming Simon?
There may be one more in 2011 but this does include quite a few diesels like Su 40 as no steam was available on some of the days.
You really chose the locations and panned them beautifully. Those trains being banked on the branch-they are some of the most remarkable steam shpts I have ever see. Thrilling. 🙂What strikes me watching clips form China s the lack of steam leaks-the locos seem to have been kept in good condition.
Fantastic. Thank you so much for posting these amazing scenes and memories. :-)
Thank you
@@simonleppardchinasteamvide7563are more videos coming?
This is absolutely wonderful-fabulous sights and sounds Thank you so much for making and posting these memories of 'real' steam workings. :-)
I enjoyed all my locations filming daily workings. In hindsite there were many other locations to which I would have gone for alternative scenes.
@@simonleppardchinasteamvide7563 All good. The ight is amazog and it all must have smelled fantastic as well. Best wishes. :-)
People at that time usually have very dark & thick hair! Today even thougt have a better living condition, a lot of people get bald. Why!
Magnificent footage. It makes me realise that I should have bought a movie camera back in 1985 when I visited China.
Great video ans nice steam locomotives of SAR
Simon I’m a steam enthusiast and I love steam from the USA and all countries
This is a sound such a real pity most youngsters won't hear or see as our Steam Trains are left to rot on dumps instead of being on display so young generation can see our Transport that was such a lovely sound to hear plus see I just love the old Steam Trains so did many people plus children really sad
I've got to go to bed. More steam tomorrow.
Stunning capture. Little compares with the sound and sight of big steam locos under load. Wow!❤
Oh my god, the tall factory building at 26:55 was the place where I worked for the first time, a paper factory, and I was still a teenager at the time. I had the pleasure of meeting those of you who photographed Forest Train back in the day. I remember there were a few people who were very old, with rosy faces and beer bellies, haha.
Why do I feel the speed of South African steam locomotive is faster than the Chinese?
Probably they were in many cases. I have personally ridden on 25NCs on passenger doing more than 110kph(70 mph) and on freight at up to 80kph (50 mph) or even more.
They are😂
DC9s? 🤔 I think you mean Cathay Pacific Lockheed L1011 Tristars! But I'll forgive you, because the video is fantastic!
Thank you for the correction! Glad you enjoyed the video. Plenty more up to 1996...
Thanx!
Thank you
China is another country that has some wonderful steam locomotives.
Grandiose Aufnahmen in beeindruckender Landschaft, Daumen nach oben!
Thank you
These clips are just fantastic Simon. As I was a fireman in Kimberley the clips of De Aar line and especially Kimberley to Bloem mean so much to me. Even seeing some of the locos I worked on is just great. I can see me spending loads of time just watching your clips. Thanks for posting
Thank you Richard, I enjoyed the filming. There is much more on later videos on my channel right up to the end of daily steam in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Enjoy them. I also enjoyed many footplate rides out of Kimberley but never did any filming from there as I had no permit.
Thanks so much for sharing this.. I can watch this sort of thing for hours..
Another great clip Simon. Brings back many memories. Thanks for posting
Excellent footage of how it was , those 25/ 25N.C. s were the giants of the cape gauge .
Amazing video clip. This shows most of the lines that were still going in the 80s and many of which I worked as a fireman. Thanks for posting
Thank you. I tried to always get to as many different lines with operating steam.
I just watched it again Simon for the 3rd time. It brings back so many memories for me. I wonder if I was fireman on any of your clips? Especially around Germiston and Kimberley. Watching all you gricers chasing the trains I recognized many of your cars and a few faces also. Im sure you and I met loads along the way, especially Orange river. Thanks again, Richard Niven
Thanks Richard, I do remember you especially when you were firing to John Gilberthorpe. Quite a few sequences in some of my later videos.
This is the best footage of SA steam I have ever seen and all all your truley footage is amazing. I was wondering if you have any footage of the narrow gauge stuff like the Alfred County Railway and other 2ft lines narrow gauge is my main obsession!
Thank you. There are sequences of Port Shepstone to Harding in various of my videos. The record triple header is shown in 1991 vol 1 from 31 minutes, original SAR footage in 1985 to 1988 vol 3 from 30 minutes plus various videos in between. I visited Alfred County Railway many times.
@@simonleppardchinasteamvide7563 Oh great thank you also I ma going to be making some videos about SA Locos here on RUclips not on this channel but on another one would it be ok if I used some of your fottage I will giuve you full credit of course.
What an incredible selection. Thank you so much for sharing the sights and sounds. Also helpful for modelling to see the train beyond the locomotives.
A pleasure, enjoy all the rest on my channel. All filmed and edited in the order taken.
Fantastic to hear and see the two 25nc at full chat at the start of the video. Thanks Simon 😊 The last I heard no 3472 was still alive and kicking. Whether that is still the case I'm unsure. The now defunct reefsteamers had her in their guardianship
Absolutely phantastic!
Sat here on a rubbish winter morning in West Yorkshire, watching Beyer Peacock Garratts scaling the banks in the North.....flooding memories of travelling from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls /Livingstone in the 80s as a kid...thank you for posting
Winter in west Yorkshire must be very different to Zimbabwe any time. Thank you for your kind comment. I had many good times following steam in Zimbabwe.
My channel has some China steam from 2011 for those interested. Thanks for sharing your films. ruclips.net/video/zQL09QFB4bM/видео.html
And to believe these beasts ran on 3ft 6'' gauge track! Compared to Japanese steamers, which (mostly) run on the same gauge, they're so much more imposing.
The South African crews definitely knew how to run their trains at maximum.
Superb footage of some wonderful locomotives. I’m looking for drawings of NBL 15F locomotives, not art drawings, technical drawings. If anyone knows where these can be copied / bought, please share the info.
Thank you for your kind comment. I cannot help you with any drawings but hopefully a viewer can.
Thoroughly enjoyable - sight and sound. Thank you for also capturnig the trains behind the locomotive - so easily overlooked. Great raw material for modelling inspiration - thank you again!
Glad you enjoyed it.
It's been exactly 30 years
One of my China steam videos - others on my channel. This is Beitai steel works: ruclips.net/video/qpEJmFjas9E/видео.html

Thank you. I am pleased you enjoyed the video. Greetings from South Africa
@@simonleppardchinasteamvide7563 👍❤️👍
Beautiful footage, great sound! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
Even in the first couple of minutes, the sound seems crisper than previous videos
I think that may have been about the time I changed microphones to Seinheisser.
How long ago was the video take ?
Between 1994 and 1996.
39:22 What an interesting sound coming off that Pacific, what causes it? Wonderful seeing the Prairie and Tank engines
Most of the Jilin SLs made that sound.I think it was some sort of modification to the blast pipe, loval to Jilin depot. I never heard it on any other classes or anywhere else.
At 101:18 14R still with Belpaire firebox? There must be a mistake.(2023.12.01-15:56-socalled South Africa)
That is a 1 class. Caption is 1 and 14R classes....
SAR's decision to relegate steam locomotives to nothing was a bit hasty. They seemed against all reports most have, capable of handling heavy loads at speed. I know that these could not work in multiples as steam turbine, diesel machanical, hydraulic and electric locomotives but there must have been boiler improvements done to let that happen and also have them fired by gas rather than coal to eliminate thick black smokes.(2023.12.01-15:37-socalled South Africa)
There was a formal report comparing the costs of diesel, elactric and steam between Kimberley and de Aar. Electric was the cheapest to run but very expensive infrastructure to install. Steam in the form of 25NCs was by far the most cost effective....
