I’m a 50+ year old guy, riding all sorts of bikes since I could reach the pedals. This channel is all about the rides and rambling about bike stuff. What works for me and what doesn’t.
I spent so much time watching other people’s rides, I figured I might as well share some of my own.

I had the same problem with inflating one of my tubeless tyres, just would not take air with a hand pump. I used a small high pressure inflation canister. The trick is to get the air in fast before it can escape. I'm thinking about buying the same bike. I don't like the Carbon colours this year. If they had had a decent red Carbon Free Range, I'd have ordered it by now.
100% 27mm is the correct seatpost size.
Great video, had a 1995 Zaskar LE back in the day, going to sell my modern Nukeproof and build a retro Zaskar, love the simplicity of the older bikes, the Jusy forks were so easy to maintain
@@timberry4250 thank you! I love building them, and yes, there’s a simplicity about them. They feel very honest and raw compared to today’s Di2 and hydraulic disc brake offerings. 🙂
Hello, I am also restoring an old GT Avalange 1.0 2003, unfortunately it is in much worse condition than yours. I am currently having problems with the front gears. Would you be able to confirm the dimensions of the Bottom Bracket, I assume it is a 68x113mm because the one I currently have a 68x108mm seems a little short to me. Also, I no longer have the original front derailleur, could you give me any kind of information so that I can find one.
@@labriejs3118 hi there. Yes the bottom bracket is 68 x 113mm. The bike has now been stripped and parts used on some of my other builds, but from memory the front derailleur was a standard 3 speed Deore. I’ve recently bought a new 3 speed Altus derailleur and front shifter from Amazon and it worked absolutely fine. I believe the pull ratio is standard on all front derailleurs. The rear derailleur is where things become more specific, having to match shifters with derailleurs and cassettes etc. Good luck with it, I much prefer the older bikes, more fun to ride 🙂
@@Bike_Guy Thanks👍
nice
Beautifully done Mate!
Top job!
I’m 6’3. Also went XL, I went with slightly shorter stem and it works. You can also rotate the bars to save around 15mm, plus bring your hoods in closer, worked for me 👍
Great video. i love the fork as it is one of my favorite forks ever made.
Thanks. It’s nice to bring life back into old frames!
@@Bike_Guy all my rides are 90's hardtails brother. cheers!
@@Bike_Guy I'm still hunting for the Judy 100 mm travel with the same set up and -5mm travel. It made me not want a Bomber.
Bike looks wicked cool very nice job.
Where did you purchase it, I’ve been looking but can’t find one anywhere for £600
I bought it from Wiggle at the beginning of the year as they were doing a closing down sale, along with quite a few spare parts. I’ve since sold it to make room for more retro style bikes, as I enjoy the build process. I’m currently finishing off a GT Zaskar from 1995 and just starting a 90s full suspension bike.
Do you know anything about the 2000 Kona Blast ford focus edition.. I have one and I need spec on this model It needs a replacement on the cassette and chain.. I believe a 11speed cassette I'm not sure if I'm correct or not
I don’t unfortunately. Have you tried Bikepedia or RetroBike?
Hi, i know this video is about something different, but I just saw your planet x tempest videos and had a quick question if thats okay! Do you find the bike sluggish when cycling on tarmac, or does it still get up to speed fairly quickly? And (if you know) do you reckon youre able to maintain a good pace on tarmac, something like 28-30kmh? cheers!
Hi. I sold the tempest a while back, but found it ok on tarmac, with the Panaracer Gravelkings. However I think that if you were to have a change of tyres (or even better, a second wheelset) with narrow road tyres, then you’d be good for quicker pace.
@@Bike_Guy Aw no! What made you want to part ways with it? And thanks a lot for the answer :D
@@bean6191 I’d not ridden much tbh and we’d moved house, so needed to offload a bike. 🙂
You do know that once you have the tool engaged on both sides you can then focus on doing one side at a time?
No I didn’t. Absolutely no instructions with it. It was pretty easy doing both at once to be honest.
@@Bike_Guy I have done it countless times and always focused on one side at a time. There's a Park Tool video where Calvin preps a BB shell. Cyclus are good I have quite a few of their frame prep tools.
Love to see you back on the bike and the new bikes and builds. Inspired to get my fat arae back on mine and round your end for a ride 👍🏻
Nice, you'll be fine shortening your hoses, you can probably get rid of that horrible curve on the back brake by taking the lever off and flip it over, it's just tension in the hose that is causing that. ;)
That’s a good point. Yeah I’ll flip it.
For the road bike you mentioned, perhaps an E-Thirteen Helix Race cassette (9 - 50), would have the range and top end you require. The freehub body must be XD type to be compatible. If you do run a single 38t chainring and it has only 27.5" wheels it equates to 50+ mph before you spin the crankset out to max rpm. If the wheels are bigger it's top end would be higher by around 7 -8 mph. Of course, this only applies in perfect conditions and circumstances.
Nice looking bargain Ragley. 800mm bars are just too much unless you're a giant.🤣 New bars look heaps better and I'm sure they're more comfortable. Cheers.
Brayton Barf and Hambleton Hough have a few short tracks to mess about on for local rides on a mtb.
How wide is the stem clamping area? Would like to mount a clamp on cradle for a bar bag beside the stem. And is the top of the bar flattened very much?
Hi. The stem area (between the riser section) is approximately 80mm, I’m not sure whether this changes with the different bar widths. After the risers, the bars are round (non flat-aero style).
Just building mine up, flat bar with MTB SRAM AXS, Carbon cranks and HUNT x wide wheels, fingers crossed it’s a belter 😬
Thanks for posting this. I had no idea in needed a spanner on the headset tool as no instructions in the box! Life saver!
Love what youve done with you Ragley, I've just bought a trig frame off of ebay🥳 I have been fortunate enough to have virtually everything top end from sram to put on(a massive thank you to my son who works at sram😁👍). I have yet to ride mine, hopefully after the weekend ( waiting on rotors and chainring). Great vid, looking forward to some trip vids🤔😁👍
Think you need your saddle higher
Just heard your comment on saddle height 🤔 I stand corrected😁👍
Have you got your seat too low? Looks like it could go up an inch or 2🤔
Hi, nice series of videos! How do you find the trig vs topstone? Wondering about going for the lighter setup with topstone or steelframe trig. Doing commuting, gravel and road on the same bike. Have a Big AL for trail and can recommend it 😊
I did a few thousand miles on the topstone and loved it, but never had a comparison against another frame type. Although I haven’t done many miles since I built the Trig, I like the more solid feel to the ride quality compared to the alloy frameset. It has a smoothness about it. The penalty is weight, but to be honest it’s not huge in the grand scheme of things.
Great looking bike and value. Just getting the right size would be an issue 😊
Really enjoyed your review and for showing off your fantastic countryside. I've just purchased the Ragley Twig frameset and I'm looking forward to building it up. Thanks for your post build tips and keep producing the videos 💪👏👏
I bought this tool. Just tried to press new headset in ti frame. Totally impossible. Then tool jammed and couldn't get that out 😫. Had to take it to bike shop. He had to welly tool out with hammer. I asked him to put cups in for me, saw the top cup go in completely wonky despite him using a proper park tool headset press. Ffs 🤦♂️😫
Sounds like a right nightmare. Did you get sorted in the end?
@@Bike_Guy Yeah, sorted now. I just hope the shop hasn't damaged the frame with them forcing it in completely wonky. One side was completely in, the other completely out 🙄
Capability Darwin: Thank you and I am with you on the 50+ When is your next video?
Hi. No more videos unfortunately. I’ve sold my camera as just not got the motivation to ride at present. Thank you for watching though! 🙂
Just looking at trig frames and came across this video and the first thing id say is the frames too small for you , your hardly extending your legs , legs, knees way to bent while cycling !
Interesting stuff again, thanks for all the videos, been enjoying them this week. One thing I was wondering is how riding the Trig compares to the Tempest that you did a thorough test on...& is that more kit related or frame? Sure you're busy, any info appreciated 👍
Hi Tom. It’s a while since I rode - September was my last ride! So not really put the Trig properly through its paces. I think the Tempest was more about the frame and it’s ride quality. The supplied kit was pretty basic, with the exception of the group set of course. I changed a few bits as soon as I got it - saddle, stem, bars. The handful of times I’ve ridden the Trig the steel frame felt solid and literally no vibration. It obviously felt heavier, but not in a slow, cumbersome way. Having the Hunt XWide gravel wheels gives some cushioning and I’ve yet to really give the narrow wide chain ring (and brand new chain) a trail. Remember the bike you had as a kid, that you could chuck at anything and it felt bombproof? That’s the impression I got from the Trig. Thank you for watching the vids 🙂
@@Bike_Guy much appreciated! I think I totally know what you mean about it, I have an old steel rigid Kona (94 I think) converted for pub rides with 2.2 Halo twin treads and there's something about it I can't quite describe...but it does feel like being a kid. I was wondering if the Trig would be like that but more able while the Tempest is clearly a great, lighter bike tho. Fair point about the kit too, having contact points and set up just right is as important as the frame really and can add to cost of buying a full bike. Super helpful, thanks again 👍👍👍
Which Cannondale topstone is this?
It’s the 2019 topstone sora - the base model of that year.
I love mine, it’s a V3 which I have had for 2.5 years and have done 5200 miles on it. I bought it with the Fulcrum 800 wheels and use a pair of Rovals from my Roubaix for road and also have another pair of off road wheels with 45mm Hutchinson Override’s on for summer gravel and the 43mm Rock and Roads which came with it during the winter. The only other thing I have done is fitted a Fabric Scoop saddle which suits me much better than the standard one.
I was initially looking at the Canyon Grizl offerings, was tempted to wait for them to be back in stock in April, and I was shocked when I saw the tempest with Sram Force axs xplr 1x on 20% sale week ago, that cost pretty much same price, as the Grizl CCF SL on GRX600/8100, such a good value Ti gravel bike. Placed the order same day, only asked them to swap the fork for the bikepacking one, can't wait to put some miles on it. Never had 1x bike, it will be amazing low maintenance do it all bike for me.
Can I ask what height and leg you are? You mentioned you’re the top of the large and felt you could go a bit bigger - I’m bang on medium / large and trying to figure out which way to go! Would be useful to know how their specs got in to the real world
Hi Tom. I’m 6ft2 so realistically I’d have had more scope with an XL. It’s a fraction on the small side for me. I think Ragleys spec suggest I go XL, but unfortunately that size wasn’t available when I was buying.
Did you say it cost £1600/1700? I can only see it for £2399.99 Apologies if I have picked this up wrongly. Currently looking to buy a TEMPEST but cannot decide which one.
Hi Duncan. Yeah the bike is the video is the same that’s currently priced at £2399.99. I haven’t checked the bike website in a about a year as I haven’t ridden that much tbh. I had do to a double-take as I couldn’t believe the size of the price increase! From memory mine was approx £1699, which at the time was a bargain. Unless everyone else’s have also jumped up in price, I’d seriously consider looking at something like Ragley Trig. These are Cromoly Steel and ride much smoother than the Planet X. At the time of writing this they are priced around £1800, with 1x11 GRX. I couldn’t justify paying an extra £700 for what is essentially a budget titanium bike, it’s good at a price, but not THAT price. Have a look at my Ragley videos, they feature the 2021 frameset. Because I stripped my Cannondale Topstone I just bought the frameset and a few parts and upgraded my wheelset. I think it cost about £1100 all in.
Thanks for reply. Lot to think about. I have three bikes at moment and at stage in life where one would do. Even toying with the TEMPEST CAMPAGNOLO EKAR TITANIUM GRAVEL BIKE. Thoughts?
@@duncanmaclauchlan5126 I’ve never used campagnolo, but can see the group set retails at around £1k. The fulcrum wheel set isn’t top of the range, but mine were the 800’s and they were very smooth - I think at around the same price point! So probably good. The good thing with Planet X is that they use V12 finance and you can get 0% finance too. Which is always good! The selcof bits are ok, I replaced my stem and bars with ritchey, but only because I had them on another bike. Be wary of the stem, the bolts don’t take much to strip the thread if you over tighten. Use a torque wrench 🙂
@@Bike_Guy Is the Tempest a harsh ride then? I thought Titanium is supposed to be fairly smooth? Unless it's not being helped by the wheels you have with it (alloy?).
@@paule4 its a while since I sold it, but I do remember that there wasn’t as much buzz through the bars as compared to an alloy frame, so not as harsh. Yeah, different wheels would improve it even still. The smoothest ride I’ve found is my Ragley steel frame with carbon wheels. Super smooth!
Is this the one that is currently priced at £2399.99?
Nice route, some roads I used to know a long time ago-ex wife came from Leeds, and Yorkshire was part of my business area until I retired 10 years ago. I have to ask what are the handlebars on your Tempest?-I have had mine for over 2 years now-in fact servicing the bottom bracket today-and have been looking at changing the bars to some with a rise which is what I have on my Specialized Roubaix.
Hi John. Yeah I miss these routes since moving to North Yorks. The bars I used on the Tempest were the Ritchey Comp Ergomax from the Wiggle website.
What do you need with a hair dryer? :P
Great to see someone building one up! What's the lower bearing angle of the Nukeproof headset? The integrated crwon race on the fork is 36 degrees which is less common than 45 degrees on most lowers.
Hello, it seems to me, that you have nealy the same high saddle and handlebar. Is that comfortable? LG Stephan
Hi, yes. I’ve had the same saddle height/bar height on most of my bikes. It’s mostly due to the fact that I had a back injury a few years ago and I try not to over stretch it by being too low.
Hey man nice bike, nice video, I s see you have the 42T chainring, would you get a bigger chasing on there or is that the biggest?
You could get bigger. I started with a 46t from the 2x donor chainset. There was plenty of room.
@@Bike_Guy Sweet, i'm getting a second set of wheels to change it into a road bike, looking for the max chaing size tbh
@@Bike_Guy do you think 48T would be to much or even a 50T?
@@IGH11011 you may well get a 50t fitted. I’d probably Email the Ragley site and check that there’d be no issues. Although I reckon most modern bikes are pretty diverse in relation to the gearing.
@@Bike_Guy thanks for the help man!
Hi, any idea how much the drop from top of seat to top of bars is?
Hi, How tall are you? I'm 6ft 2" and looking at size L but not sure if too small for me?
I’m 6ft2 also. Give the choice an XL would be a better size, unfortunately it wasn’t available when I was looking to buy.
@@Bike_Guy I tend to prefer my bikes slightly on the smaller size. Do you think this works in an L with that in mind?
@@Luke-kp1px I’d say so. I put a 100mm stem on and had to raise the seat, but it feels a bit more nimble if you know what I mean.
hi mate.. just wondering what size bike stem you used . ragley site says 70mm with 7 %lift.
Hi. Mine is actually 100mm with 7° lift. I had to go slightly longer as I went for a Large frameset (no XL in stock).

I think your seat is too low mate.... Just an observation really
Yes you’re correct. I hadn’t noticed it, but it had slid down. On the way back I started to get some knee pain and then realised I wasn’t extending my leg correctly. Should be sorted now - added some carbon friction paste to the seat tube.
Superb build there! I built a 29er with the Ragley Big Al and the frame quality is fantastic to be fair
Thanks. I think I’d be tempted with a Big Al if I were ever going back to mtb’ing
