Construction of a Radius Dish
Просмотров 8036 месяцев назад
This video describes how to construct a radius dish using a simple jig and router. These are tools you probably already have in your shop. So it is relatively inexpensive and straight forward. You can make any size/depth radius dish you need using this plan. The only tricky part is the math - so I have posted links to a couple different radius dish depth calculators that will do the math for yo...

    You made a very strong drive mechabism with the threaded rod through the shaft, but in the end the turning force is transferred to the outer tube by four very small wood screws.??? I cant help thinking it would be better to have several more discs inside the tube to stop it distorting.

    You would increase the suction sooo much more if the blast gates were closer to your vacuum system. Essentially your loosing the majority of suction through the piping by have the gates that far away from vacuum - even when remainer gates are shut off

    • @homebuiltacoustics8510
      @homebuiltacoustics8510 Год назад

      Thank you, Kevin. I will consider if I can reconfigure. Maybe just add blast gates?

    • @PennsPens
      @PennsPens Год назад

      @homebuiltacoustics8510 Consider making one main blast gate as close to your main vacuum sorse as possible, in which only "the main vacuum hose" can slide/shift from one individual machine to another totally independently. This means only the one machine that your wanting to use draws directly from the main vacuum sorse at any one time. (No loss in sucton from other hoses that lead to nowhere). When switching to another machine simple slide the main sirse of vacuum to the next machine your wanting to use where essentially the next machine vacuum leads to but now only drawing to that machine independently Yes you'll still need to change the gate directly from one machine to another. However you won't have to move any hoses as each machine leads to the main vacuum sorce resulting no loss in sucton when moving the main vacuum sorse from one machine to another. Hope this helps

    Thanks for sharing Mark. What size are the dovetail openings at their widest point? Are these bought templates or did you make them?

    • @homebuiltacoustics8510
      @homebuiltacoustics8510 Год назад

      Hi Martin! Glad you found this useful. The width of the dovetail at the widest point will depend on the depth of the instrument. Adjust the narrow end of the template so that it just reaches the binding at the heal. Be careful not to router through the back! Be sure to take into account that you are using a dovetail router bit. Cut the mortise first, and measure the widest point to cut the tenon. BTW, I did make the templates myself out of plexiglass. But you can get some templates made of pressboard at a reasonable price. If you aren't making a bunch of instruments, that might be a good option. ruclips.net/video/aWtAy5vS6gA/видео.html In the above video, Robbie O'brien goes into detail on using this jig. Let me know if you have other questions!

    I have made similar modifications to my older Craftsman saw also. One modification I made was to use pipe insulation on the front of the saw on the tilt function. I made a slit in the back curved part of the insulation which allows the blade to tilt. When the tilt arm passes through the insulation the insulation seals back not allowing much air to pass through. The difficult part was attaching the insulation to the inside of the saw. As you probably found out, there’s not much room to work inside the saw. (I’m 68 now; it’s harder to do ANYTHING!) I subscribed, can’t wait for more from you.

    • @homebuiltacoustics8510
      @homebuiltacoustics8510 2 года назад

      This sounds like a great modification, ED! I use my saw for perpendicular cuts 99% of the time, but next time I need to tilt I will make your suggested modification. Thanks for sharing this!

    Interesting build. I've built two bending irons, one small 1.5" diameter and one 3" diameter. The larger one uses a 200w light bulb to heat and the other uses a cheap cartridge heater. Pretty simple and mounted vertical on a guide board and held in my woodworkers vise. Are you on the FB Ukulele Luthiers group?
