You just got a new subscriber.
You’re trying too hard to copy the “Big Old Boats” channel…..
@user-xq1tl3pj9m lol very funny but no, you think my little channel and minimal editing abilities are the same to his or compared? But that's your opinion. Either way thats not what im trying to do, I made this channel way before i even knew about his, and it's a good thing I don't do these videos for attention or fame or anything else. I do them to give a shred of honor and remembrance to the people and Sailors who lost their lives on the Great Lakes. Thanks again!
No he's not copying he's doing his own thing, what a dumb comment.
Noronic? Should have been named Mornonic. Such incompetence from the crew.
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you for this great presentation of this sad moment in history. You do a great job and I like listening to you. Keep up with your wonderful work and I’m looking forward for the next video!
Quay= is pronounced Key
My father was working for the Toronto life saving and police patrol when this happened. He had just come off watch duty and the person who replaced him sounded the alarm as the glow from the fire could be seen and was growing. My father said the erriest thing was the day after where one door on the ship was open and creaking and groaning as it sweyed in the wind.
Oh wow! I can't imagine how he felt and seeing that devastation afterwards, I hope this video sheds just a tiny light on this story, so it won't be forgotten and for the victims and their families and friends. I am very sad to hear this story.
Similar to the tragedy of The Morro Castle, her fire started in a closet/locker that needed a key, no adequate fire equipment, no organized escape plan.
Really enjoyed your video presentation of a horrible tragedy. A small pronunciation correction: “quay” is pronounced “key”. This disaster occurred before the St. Lawrence Seaway was built, so a ship of this length likely couldn’t travel further than Prescott at that time owing to the size limits of the old canals between Prescott and Montreal.
@Play_fare thank you I do try my best at pronouncing last names and places haha 😄
I had never before heard this story.
It's an incredibly sad story. I wonder how much complacency played a part? Unfortunately, the ship design was severely lacking. The lack of multiple points of egress was moronic in the extreme. I wouldn't want to board a ship built this way, but as you said, those were different times. It makes me think back to travelling on the Prinz Hamlet from Harwich to Hamburg and a week later in reverse. That ship also boarded from a lower deck. I guess as a 15 year old in 1983, I didn't worry about it. Although, I do remember thinking that I'd expected to board much higher up the ships side. Probably because the only other ship that I had ever been on before was HMS Leander as a 10 year old with cub scouts. That was far smaller in hindsight. 😢❤😢
You are a very good story teller. A very sad story.
Enjoyed your presentation.
Horrific tragedy and who would have thought the lemon oil used to beautify and preserve the wood would create a firestorm. Obviously only having to Escape Routes on the bottom deck contributed as well. First I've heard of this tragedy. I look forward to hearing the next informative story.
Thank you for another great video, even though I was choking down my tears. All the ships that went down on the lakes or like this ship where there was great loss of life deserve to be remembered, and thank you for taking the time to give us this 😊
Haven't heard this story.👍👍👍 Great job!
God bless
Another valuable addition to the Great Lakes story. Thank you. 😊❤😊
Sorry to complain but you say the boat was nearing the end of the shipping season on May 3rd. That can't be right.
Must have meant December 3rd...😊
I do like your channel tho
@donaldlyons537 yes I misspoke and didn't clarify the second time that it was December I was referencing
Your video was interesting, informative and thought provoking. You took great care in how you covered the lost Crew, and did so with great respect and dignity. You conveyed their final tragic story in a considerate and responsible manner, emphasising their humanity and actual lives. Each person met a truly horrific end, both on the ship and on the island. That anyone survived in the open lifeboat in that terrible sea state and sub zero blizzards is remarkable, but unfortunately they arrived on the island dead and dying, with nothing available to support and sustain life in what were extremely savage, un-survivable conditions. One can only imagine the poor young woman, desperately writing her last letter, in the knowledge that she simply could not survive if rescue didn't come very soon. Knowing she's never going to see her beloved family again, to share her tales of adventure on the lakes, far from home. Nothing on their ship was so urgent that it couldn't wait for better conditions, and rather than arrive at its destination the cargo forms a debris field around the grave of the ship on the seabed. As with far too many Great Lakes tragedies, this could have been avoided simply by waiting a little longer before departure...
@felixcat9318 yes I agree, I wanted to give just a shredd of insight into their stories and what may have happened that night or however many days they lasted after the sinking, I do plan on revisiting the Kamloops with another video in the future, it was my first video and I know I miss spoke once or twice and want to clean it up with a better one soon.
Thanks for giving us insight on some of the lesser known wrecks on the Great Lakes. I enjoy this genre and am looking forward to more of your videos! Keep up the great work.
Wow, such a good video, full of history and to know more about the Great Lakes and the ships from the past is such great knowledge, Thank you for this and keep the videos coming 😊❤
This guy's channel is criminally underrated. It should be up there with Big Old Boats
@@connarcomstock161 Think I like it more than BOB... myself. BOB is good though
He gives me Maritime Horrors vibes. I like this guy’s style too.
@@Regal_Two I haven't come across Maritime Horrors. But going to check it out 😁
Good video
Nobody uses meters. Like using yards. Feet please.
I am a Nobody 😂
@jeffpotipco im pretty sure that the united states is one of the few if not only countries that uses feet/yards
Just multiply the number of meters by 3.3 to find out how many feet.
No one uses the metric system. It wasn't a big deal at all in the 80s in school. Maybe a few weeks of learning about metrics and then they moved on to the English measurement that we all knew. I hate when youtubers won't give both. Like the value of money then and now and how much the money would be if they were in the US. I've never heard of a lot of the foreign currency.
We use feet and yards, along with Liberia and Myanmar. Everyone else uses Metric. However, Canadians and Aussies use them colloquially. Some people in the UK too. So, no. It's pretty much just us, bro.
❤
Great story and video!!👍👍
Keep them coming ....can never get enough of these historical great lakes story hours
Happy days new video out
Excellent. Can't wait to watch. Thank you for this.
This one’s kinda creepy. The foundering, and the aftermath. I read about this decades ago. I grew up near Duluth/Superior as a kid. And books of local were the norm. I read a lot about some of these wrecks. This one has always been kinda creepy. So close yet so far. The ships origin being built off the Great Lakes is kinda unique. Being of Canadian heritage it being expected. Well done in video form and presentation. One thing I finds creepy about this was the dark water with snow. Almost what someone would see outside a porthole or a lifeboat. Again I walked the beaches in November and January which I’m sure holds no candle to being out there. But it puts a idea of the harshness, loneliness and bitter cold on this. This ship restocked the Canadian side towns and villages with LCL type loads. A verity of commodities used in everyday life. I’m sure the crew was well know up and down the line. Well done.
I love learning about those lesser known vessel. Thank you for educating us on their history.
I miss living up there. It was peaceful and terrifying but always beautiful.
As an owner of one of these lost ship, is there any regret for not ending the season earlier?🤔
So what happened to the artifacts found on the museum raid? At least if they wound up in a museum what better result could there be?
@campkohler9131 most of them are in the Great Lakes Maritime shipwreck museum at whitefish point lighthouse and museum.
My grandparents had a home on Lake Michigan, I grew up on spending many hours swimming, fishing, boating in the summer and ice boating in the winter when conditions were right. In my adult years I did scuba diving on many wrecks (nothing deeper than 120') in Lake Superior and Michigan. Besides incredible beauty, the lakes have air of mystery and danger. You always need to be prepared and have respect for them when out on them, they can turn incredibly violent in a very short time.
if you don't mind me asking why did you not dive deeper than 120?
Brilliant channel just found it blown away you don't have more followers your videos are 1st class
Excellent video! Thank you!
Lake Baikal has a fifth of the freshwater on Earth also lol
Just for the record, it's the Well-land canal not way-land
Recognize the Kamloops from the story of old whitey
I can't "put this story down" either... The only negative part, is people died. ( Dude's poem about got me!).. great story! And these things they did, So others might live in a greater degree of comfort! .. THANK YOU!?🙏
I am surprised you didn't include the SS Meteor, built in Superior WI and launched in 1896. The Meteor is the last surviving whaleback and is now a museum ship in Superior WI. As a boy, I remember seeing the Meteor, at the time a Standard Oil Co. tanker going through Sturgeon Bay WI.
I knew nothing of this vessel. Great work on her story and the photos.
