Leywa from Kuwait (1)
Leywa from Kuwait (1)
A film by Rolf Killius for the Qatar Digital Library.
Leywa (or liwah) is ritual music of African origin practiced in the whole Gulf region.
The instrument players are based at the centre of the performance while the surnai (oboe) player leads the dancers and group singers who move anti-clockwise around the instrumentalists. The music and dance starts slowly and quietly, increases in volume and tempo and ends in a crescendo.
The melody instrument is supported by the msindo (‘stand-up’ drum; played in pairs), beeb (large drum), the sigange or jigange (a metal idiophone) and the clapping of the dancers. The surnai player is Sultan Al-Meftah.

Galfat Shobani - Sea music from Oman
This was fascinating to watch; I love the beauty that seems common in Islamic literature
Gracias por esto.
What type of pen was able to draw on the leather? Is it a paint pen? Sharpie?
hahha where's the process?
Good result but not very useful for who wants to learn in detail. Thanks for keeping your secrets and not sharing them!
Ummmm... isn't it "Eastern Mediterranean" and *not "Islamic"?* What's so (solely) religious about it?
Absolutely useless video....
The most elegant and Beautiful cover and decorations thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.C.E.Huggins Rarebooks.
ترجموه الله يهديكم
صناعة تاج الكتاب (Band) حسب النمط الإسلاميّ
Good trick! You started with yellow and blue and finished blue and white.
I love how clean your workstation is, unlike others.
"Making an Islamic style end band" but not "Showing you how to make an Islamic style end band."
Precisely. We need much more objectivity and viewer-based consideration. I think this is a case of 'Sage on the Stage' rather than 'Guide on the Side'
Doesn't help much really.....
I would have liked to see how the golden thread was applied. ;)
This is the same method as was undertaken in the West. It is not specifically Eastern or Islamic at all.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing this. Im going to try this technique on my next journal :)
Excellent reference ... I love the way the two cultures mixed much more than we think. There wasn't 'one way' to accomplish binding a manuscript.
THIS IS SO COOL THANK YOU
Great little film.. any chance of doing a more detailed one on how the headbands were done? I would love to learn the technique for the Islamic style headbands
