Here’s the lyrics to the song O Tannenbaum: 1st Verse: (German) O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum, wie treu sind deine Blätter! Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit, Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit. O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum, wie treu sind deine Blätter 1st Verse: (English) O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree How loyal are your leaves/needles! You’re green not only in the summertime, No, also in winter when it snows. O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree How loyal are your leaves/needles! 2nd Verse: (German) O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum! Du kannst mir sehr gefallen! Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut! O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum! Du kannst mir sehr gefallen 2nd Verse: (English) O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree You can please me very much! How often has not at Christmastime A tree like you given me such joy! O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree, You can please me very much! 3rd Verse: (German) O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum! Dein Kleid will mich was lehren: Die Hoffnung und Beständigkeit Gibt Trost und Kraft zu jeder Zeit. O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum! Das soll dein Kleid mich lehren 3rd Verse: (English) O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree Your dress wants to teach me something: Your hope and durability Provide comfort and strength at any time. O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree That’s what your dress should teach me.

Great Question. We did a little research and found out that all early cars in the U.S. had right-handed steering wheels following the practice of right-hand horse drawn carriages. In the early 1900s, car makers began switching to left-side steering because it was considered safer for the driver to be closer to the center of the road (to judge distances of on-coming traffic) and also because it was better to discharge front seat passengers on the sidewalk instead of the middle of the road. Ford switched from a right to left side wheel in 1908, but other car makers, like Pierce-Arrow, didn't switch until the 1920s, so in 1915 it was possible to see both types of steering wheels on U.S. roads.

This is a very interesting video. I note that the men are wearing suits that don't look too much different from the suits men wear today. Also, the cars seem to have the steering while on the right side of the car. Is that correct or is it just that they are projecting the film backwards? If it is correct, when did we switch to steering wheels on the left hand side? If the NHP could add in some details it would be great. Like what make and model of car are they driving? Can they add in some details about other things that happened at the 1915 California Fair? Also a sound track would be nice; some music with a bit of narration perhaps?
