Disclaimer: Unbezahlte Werbung da Gratis-Review Gerät von xTool. Vielen Dank! I've had a brief chat with my good friend Ed (who also has one of these little wonderful machines) about how the laser marks anodised aluminium. Well, with the equipment around, there was only one way to go - science it out! I did a couple of parameter tests (VIS vs IR laser, full power, 2 different speeds, 1-10 passe...

Welcome to the second episode of the Kern Competence Podcast. In this episode, we look at what marketing is, why Kern probably does it different and chat about product differentiation. Don't worry, this is not about advertisements, but about running a business with a strategy! Note: this episode was recorded in June, 2023.

Disclaimer: Unbezahlte Werbung da Gratis-Review Gerät von xTool. Vielen Dank! I've seen a couple of reviews of the xTool F1 laser marker. Most people used it to engrave hotdogs, make art, cut paper. I was wondering, is this a sensible machine for use in a machine shop? Check the video out to see how it handles engraving milled aluminium, stainless steel, even carbide! If you are interested in a...

Cool machining and music😀
Business model and Marketing strategy, never realized the importance of these two segments/departments - quality product is just half the story ! TIL, thank you.👍 On technology, rather surprised at zero application of flexure in Kern machines or accessories - but good to see 6-axis hexapod platforms though !
Excited to listen!!!
Oh, Question. What decisions led up to Kern deciding on its standout RED color?
Another insightful podcast. I didn't think I'd listen to one about sales but I liked your specific but also not specific examples. Also, thank you for breaking down the acronyms! Could you do one about probing/automation/industry 4.0 stuff? HSK vs other spindle options?
Impressive Marv! Higher MRR than I typically do on my HSK63 or 40 taper machines, especially when taking into account how fast the linking moves are.
Wonderful episode!
When you said the axis are made of aluminium, even the hidrostatic guideways or the spindle? I thought the guideways were always made of steel, if they're made of aluminium it would grow a small oxide layer.
The guideways are made out of aluminium. We're hard-anodising them (at low temperature), the final lapping reduces this film thickness and creates the precise surface and form of the guideways. Being anodised, they can't grow an oxide layer any longer (as there's already a manufcatured aluminium oxide layer on them). The spindle is not made from aluminium.
woah very interesting! I need to level up my laser tests 😁
You are very welcome to visit and throw stuff into the SEM :)
wait wait, is it dampening or damping? Thank you for another episode, it was a great surprise to learn aluminum was used in the construction!
Damping. Thanks for correcting a non-native speaker! :)
Amazing what high speed video can show, and probably cheaper than high powered stroboscopic lighting.
It's shot with the fantastic Freefly Wave - I've been constantly amazed what quality is available with relatively affordable high speed cameras nowadays. This shot was recorded with 390 FPS / 4K and is played at 24 FPS - so 6.1% real speed!
On their website it says it can do 2K at 1461fps. May we see that? It will require quite a lot a light. What lens are being used?
I notice you're "climb" milling, do you recommend this as a means to clear the swarf out of the way of the tool?
Climb milling is the prefered milling direction on backlash free machines. Better chip formation, as the chip starts "thick" and the tool is not rubbing. With traditional direction milling, aluminium is not easy to mill dry/mql based like in this shot.

Very very very interesting Marvin. I really like these kind of video’s where you going into the nitty gritty of ‘surface/material reaction’ of the lasering. There’s always more that meets the eye.
Yes! The SEM is probably my favourite measurement device at Kern. It shows so much what you can't grasp with your eye / normal microscopes. Thank you for the kind words on the video. I'm by far not an expert in laser material interaction, and i usually don't talk about stuff I have only a basic (textbook) understanding off, so this video was me just explaining what I see and not doing any theory. If you are interested in laser-material interact, a fantastic book on this is in the SPRINGER series in Materials Science: Laser Precision Microfabrication (Joi Sugioka et al) from 2010.
Cool! Been thinking about getting something like the a xTool F1 but the real envy is having that SEM to play with! Thanks for sharing and grats on the Micro HD :)
I've been very surprised with it. The last time i went shopping for chinese machines was 10 years ago, and back then it was a horrible user experience. While I do think the infrared diode could use a little bit more power, overall it's a sweet, sweet little machine. Thank you for the kind words on the video :) seems like I should do some more SEM videos then?
@@MarvGro Yeah china stuff overall today vs 10 years ago is something completly different indeed. And yes.. moar SEM please :]
Thank you gentlemen, for a fascinating podcast. I hesitate to comment without knowing your target audience. If you are targeting people who are familiar with your company and your products, then my comments aren't very relevant. But if you intend to inform people who don't know much about Kern, then it might help to provide information about the Kern products that you mention, and how they differ. Also, you mention the names of some of your Kern colleagues. Who are they and what do they do at Kern?
Could I get a copy of that 10 commandments of Kern Quality?
Awesome episode guys!
🔥🔥🔥
🎉
Don’t overstress your machine too much now. 😂
We are looking into lasers for material/stock engraving and tool Engraving. This looks like a great option. Thanks for the video Marvin 👍🏻
Damn, thats a pretty nice little engraver. Just the fact that it can do endmills is pretty dope, since you know some manufactures can't manage to do it for you 'cough' Harvey 'cough'...
I feel you Amish. *coughs in swiss* 6C tools... :'(
Very interesting, looks much better than I would have thought. Thanks for the review!
Thank you for the kind words! I also was really surprised what this little machine is pulling off :-)
Nice review. I would have been interested if it can engrave a hotdog :-|
Ugh. Kill the music. I want to hear the MILLING
which song is that?
dumb dumb (sped up)
@@Windows350 danke
Would be amazing to watch a CNC video without the generic techno music. Who even makes that crap? Amazing machine tho.
This is fucking awesome, but... You know... 4minutes mark... That is pure none-productional jerk off video content....but hey...here we are...at youtube...
An der besten Stelle abgebrochen. Und das Endresultat hätte ich auch gerne gesehen...
2:05 --> That chunk of material in the middle of the hole have the potential of jamming between the cutting tool and the part, the consequence being damage to the part and/or the tool. Next time, please turn it into chips (by adding another pass), it's merely gonna add five seconds of cycle time, and greatly reduce the risk of breaking something. Other than that, fantastic video, fantastic machine !
Or a tapered helical plunge
oh no.... not another machining video with a lame ass soundtrack....... just leave it with ambient sound.... much better
That is beautiful. A machine that I want but is too expensive to ever consider and a work envelope that is too small for what I want to do.
Cutting oil or coolent?
100% oil. Oelheld Sintogrind.
Mal wieder youtube content ❤
Seid wann hast du denn einen RUclips kanal?
Schon ziemlich lange, aber nicht sehr aktiv seit ein paar Jahren. Die Arbeit für lange RUclips Videos war mir eigentlich zu groß.
I feel like i have something in my eyes watching this thing rough that material out..
I would love to see the part of the code that generates the toolpath (i.e control of all axis ...) for this. It's not that hard in principle, but still
what is the punch die used for?
of course it's heidenhain control
danke
To say it’s carbide the small end mill doing the scanning had some tool life in it.
Naja ich komme nicht weit. Ich weiß noch nicht einmal wo ich diese mesh Einstellungen überhaupt finde.
very impressed about b-180 at the end
hello what's the name of the track
Please tell me the name of the song?
Nice ! Even the music is up to speed with the machine 😀
