HONDA CL500 No Nonsense Owners Review

I recently purchased the Honda CL500 and it's time to share my thoughts. A few comparisons to the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 (naturally) thrown in for good measure. None of the typical nonsense chat you often hear from RUclips reviews and no bullsh*t! Just an honest review from an honest Scottish biker. What is it with Honda and rear brakes? Every Honda I test rode (new bikes: NX500, Hornet 750, NC750X) had awful rear brakes and added bonus a crashy rear shock. Deal breakers, bought a V-Strom 800RE which has a superb set of brakes and decent suspension for road.
A great review. I’m thinking of swapping my 350 Classic for an Interceptor, so this was invaluable information 😀
Did you sell your Interceptor? Personally, I’m on the fence of buying one because of all the videos illustrating constant problems owners are having… Which to me is pretty sad because it’s one of the nicest looking middleweight retro bikes around at least here in Canada.
Great review. Its a superb bike. Except for that stupid display. Mine gives 85 mpg (UK).
Thanks for the review. Excellent and honest. Like the music too. I just bought the CL500 after a recent return to biking after 40 years away. Loving it so far. I bought a new 2023 model which is heavily discounted as there is a 2025 version coming. As far as I can tell there are only a few relatively minor improvements in the new version.
I like you style pal, thanks for sharing. I got my choice down its either this or the new Honda GB350S which is due out in spring 2025. Still not sure.
And now there are rumours of a GB500 circulating...makes the choice even trickier! The GB350 looks stunning though
Thanks for this review. Can you do a more direct comparison with the RE Interceptor 650? Pros and cons and your overall feel of each? Thanks!
Not my fave, prefer the RE Bear or BSA 650 but looking at the price 2nd hand, qith the reliability and with loads OF accesories available to make it more personal, it makes a lot sense. Thanks for the review
That's what she said 🤣
Sex fefty twen...
Only thing that upsets my OCD is,everything's round, round LEDs within a round light, round indicators, round mirrors, round clock, round tubing swingarm, round holes everywhere, the engineers went for a pub lunch, came back to the office, and put an oblong taillight on it??? Unit Garage built a nice one,and i like the Motoism's rear light change, though one from a Fantic Caballero would look better,it's round!
Good reiew,Ive done 12000 kilometres on mine in Greece it always puts a smile on my face !
💕💕💕💕👍👍👍👍🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Don’t just clean the relays, but replace them for a quality brand. Stadium bar end mirrors are superb and very much in keeping with the style. Every one to their own but I think the removal of all the bits and pieces is an awful idea and as for the side bags 🤢🤮. But this shows how well you can personalize this fantastic bike and how we all think so differently.
Really enjoyed this review & spot on about the bike being refined to iron out the early model kinks. I've had a new 2023 model for 9mths - now have 5k klms & the clunky noise on acceleration is now non-existent as the engine's now run in - i was careful during the run in period not to over rev it & now it's as smooth as silk - have taken it out a number if times through mountains & national parks on long day trips & it just doesn't miss a beat - as for the comfortableness of the seat ....well my mates reckon i must have a granite arse :) as i just don't need to stop & stretch out .....they have a dr650, klr650 & new Himalayan 450 - so i win in those stakes & yes I'm the only one who hasn't had a stack in the bush or dropoed it - bike is so well balanced - when we arrived at a few stops in country towns most people only wanted to look at my 411 Himalayan much to the changrain of my colleague who owned the new 450 Himalayan - he asked why this was so & i simply replied that so many bike models look alike but this bike has its own distinctive character & that retro look seals the deal - to date I've found the 2023 411cc Himalayan to be bullet proof & will be taking it for many more bush adventure rides west of the Gold Coast (Australia )on 2-3 day rides - feel free to join me as the countryside is simply amazing territory & it's truly addictive l?whike riding on this bike. I refuse to leave this world in a safe & boring manner - I wonder if i can fit my Himalayan in my coffin when my time comes when i have to walk up the those pearly white stairs to meet St Peter at the gates to my after-life :). Now I'm aged 65 yrs & intend to start filming my mini adventures in the near future to create more interest for those who are aged 55+ & wish to experience unparalleled adventure outside the 55+ retirement estates - beats walking your dog down the street every morning. Sometimes to drink champagne must take a chance so i get my champagne views & kicks on an 411cc Himalayan - it realky is worth takibg the chance & it'll add that extra dimension to your life - as they say in Nikki...Just Do It
Same issue . What was the problem bro?
12 months on I still love mine. Get used as a winter hack…recently put road 6’s on..stock tyres I didn’t really get on with.
Good video. I have a T100 and a Classic 350. I think about the RE 650 stuff a lot lately. I'm 73. The T100 is getting heavy.
Stunning machines 👍👍👍👍👍
There have been some real beauties since I made this video. Maybe time for a follow up...
I just love the way you talk! I have the slightly less cool American version without CL decals (Thanks mersades) I have had the bike for 3 months and just cracked 106 miles. Great bike but we're still getting to know each other. Thinking about a windscreen but its only needed after 55 mph or so.
Thank you! I usually get less than kind comments about my accent, so that's refreshing. I agree with the windscreen comments. I haven't found one I like the look of though sadly. I added a high level mudguard, purely for enhanced scrambler looks! Otherwise still stock and still loving it!
How do go about getting insurance
@timothybrockbank7474 in what sense? I just informed my insurance company that I had some modifications. Because none of them were performance mods, there was no change to the premium. They also felt that because the tank cover is removable, they wouldn't class is as a colour change - they just noted the policy to say it had a white removable cover over a blue tank. Hope that answers the question!
@@Fergutron that’s great thanks it seems some insurance companies can make things hard work considering an interceptor myself and flat trackering it
Same colour as mine, another common problem is block tank drain vent next to the filler cap, can’ lead to rain water getting into the fuel,
Interesting! I actually sold the bike a little while back. Guy who bought it has done crazy miles on it since with zero issues! I miss it, but that's true of every bike I've ever sold!
😂 your final comments made me laugh
Excellent review, and the Land Rover comparison (as a huge Defender fan out in the muddy fields and lanes of Mid Wales) sold me!! Just buying my first bike, and this is what I went for. Ticks a lot of boxes for me. I'm an explorer, not a speed demon. Put down a deposit on a barley used 2022 today. Thanks so much for helping give me the confidence to go for this one.
I'm glad my little video could help! Especially as a first bike when you haven't been used to riding something with bags of power for years, it will be great. If you plan on exploring the lanes etc, it will be fantastic. And as I tried to show in the video, the reality is, you've got enough power for all types of sensible riding on roads too. Enjoy!!!
Good & balanced review. How do you find it on the motorway at 70mph, stability when near to lorries and smoothness in terms of vibration? What about sear comfort on long journey's? Thanks.
Thank you. Anything under 80mph it feels like it has more than adequate power. It pulls well and cruises well. It never felt underpowered to me, especially given the style of bike and character of the engine.
I think the reason the 500x has dual disk isn't for stopping power for occasional braking. I think it's for less fade under repeated or prolonged braking with the bike loaded for touring. Stopping a scrambler unloaded and on a flat surface is a different animal than coming down through the mountains on a bike that's loaded up for a trip. I had one motorcycle that the brakes were fine for years but when I started touring on it with cargo I ended up warping a rotor.

I feel very drawn to a Himalayan. amazing price and value. I want to be able to go on more adventures off the beaten path. The only issue is that I live in the US and people usually drive 70-90 on the freeway. Coming from an Indian Scout, it'll take some getting used to driving slower, but not a bad thing to be honest, especially when there is so much traffic where i live. I will also say, I rode my friend's meteor 350, and it was honestly much more enjoyable than my big expensive bike!
Went out on mine this morning for the first time in 3 weeks. (I recently bought a Honda ADV 350 and can't keep off it!). However, I was reminded what a great bike this is. It goes great and has a unique look. Totally agree with all that you said. Ride safe.
Thanks for the video!, I'm on the market looking for a new bike, when I was young (I'm 58 now) I always had enduro bikes, Honda XL125 at 16, Yamaha XT600 around 30, then at 36 my daughter was born and the scooter era began... but now I want to get back on a "real" bike and the CL 500 seems to meet all my needs: neither extreme engine nor extreme riding position (I wouldn't have the ability anymore), driving in the "jungle" of Rome traffic (the city where I was born and where I still live) and taking beautiful trips out of town on weekends with my wife. I love the style of this bike and the green color too. Ciao!
Excelente! Estoy esperando que me entreguen mi Interceptor que seguramente será la próxima semana. Tuve ocasión de probarla en varias oportunidades y me encanto. Saludos @JuamphyCocina
I have been trying to find a Dealership in the United States, with absolutely no luck, Can't buy one if you can't find one. Sure would like a list of States with Dealerships.
@@jeff-s8x agree. You need to have a dealer close by for peace of mind. I know there's one in Warrendale PA - I'm hoping to visit them in a couple of weeks when I'm out there. I'm sure the RE website has a dealer search?
Your himalayan seats from?
The seat is a custom from a guy in the UK
Mine was the battery too, but that was only part of the problem. Battery terminals were damaged, they are cheap and can warp, so it wasn't getting a good connection. I replaced it with another brand, and had to replace the relays. It was good for a whole year! And now I have complete power failure... so a new issue
Had the same problem just last week never seen so much grease balmed into a plug !! Cleaned them out started instantly . I absolutely love the bike rides really well handles like a dream and has enough power for me now ! I have been riding since 16 I’m now 68 and it reminds me of my youth !! And that is the best thing ever for me !🤔😁😁
I have a CL. I owned a few bikes and this is close to my favorite. My 1970's Yamaha XS650 with all its vibes was still my fav. I really enjoyed your review.
Thank you! Appreciate the comment. My love for it has only grown since I published this video
Yes, you’ve got it in one, I have one of these and I share your views with positivity. I ride this bike more than any other I’ve owned so that tells me how diverse it is to me.
It really is a brilliant all rounder!
Just cleaned my relays ! Bike wouldn’t start was spitting on my last ride out all seems ok ! 👍
Great review. 👍
@findingneutral thank you! Checked out your channel too and subbed 👍 Great stuff
@Fergutron Thanks Fergutron. Much appreciated. I kinda ran out of post worthy content as I'm just riding all 4 bikes now when time & weather permits. I think the CL500 is really cool and have wanted one a while. Sub'd to you as well. I'm looking forward to your future stuff on it.
Something I found interesting was the CL has the same engine, sprocket size, and wheel size as the CB500X (2021ish version). You mentioned riding a CB before. Was that an X or F? I'm just wondering if it kind of feels pretty much like an X? Thanks for any insight.
💪🙂👍
Love this, thanks for sharing 👍
Отличный байк. Хочу стать владельцем такого. Делайте больше видео про него. Что заменить? Как сделать обслуживание? Какие интересные аксессуары?
A great review! I've just bought an Interceptor 650 on Bank Holiday Monday. I only went for a look and ended up leaving a deposit, it's being delivered next week. It's in the Barcelona Blue colour scheme, I don't think I could commit to all that polishing even though it looks superb. Mine has upgraded Powerage end cans too so sounds fantastic. It'll sit perfectly at the side of my Tracer 900.
Best review I have seen on this bike, I love mine
Fantastic review mate, probably the best I`ve watched on the RE650.
@anthonyfox5337 So many thanks for the kind words. I'm trying to find the time to keep making content. Hopefully you check out some other videos. I have a young family and a busy job and they have to come first, so im not uploading super regular yet. Really appreciate you watching and taking the time to leave such kind feedback mate.
@@Fergutron I`ll be watching all your content and subscribing too.
I bought a three year-old Interceptor, in gorgeous Orange Crush, just over 3000 miles on the clock from a reputable nationwide dealership, with six months warranty for £3995. Bargain of the century in my opinion! It's shiny as new and is simply brilliant. Downsides? The ride is a bit hard, as is the standard seat. The bike can be a bit twitchy on poorly maintained roads, so you have to choose the best line. The bar grips are a bit hard for longer distances, but I'm looking into that one. It will easily do motorway stuff, but I won't. It's far too boring. Thankfully, I live on the edge of the Peak District. Happy Days. But such a fun, reliable bike! Love and peace.
Your points made are accurate good vlog!
@johnrocker2986 thank you John!
Agree with the the mirrors. I had to buy extenders for my Triumph Tiger mirrors, but the Enfield is fine.
Nice bags.
Do you have of review how to use cover tank ?
@mac2i2 sadly, I had all the footage of fitting saved on a memory card that decided it was time to stop working :( it's very simple though - there is a small bracket that mounts where the oil cooler mounts for the front. The rear mounts to the tank mounts.
@@Fergutron many thank for explain it’s very nice.
