starting revision, reacting to my first draft, starting a new wip and life in general 🍂🍁

I did just that! In the meantime, I read new books, watched my favourite movies, went to a concert. It was so fun but I missed writing for the most part. this comment got so long im so sorry!! ToT This video is just so great that I just really into this! but tl;dr: Im already gushing over this book and giggling and kicking my feet XD thanks for sharing <3 Having feedback questions is such a good idea. It lets beta readers know exactly what you're looking for, so they can go back and specifically think about if that goal has been met. Sometimes people go "it's good" and that's nice but not helpful lol or they can say "pacing needs work" but not be specific so having something to look for helps everyone involved. Maybe not in this context specifically because this looks like largely craftsmanship feedback, but this can also really, really help with getting the feedback you want in terms of the target audience. Sometimes people can give food advice, but it misses since the advice applies to a different "story" than what the author is trying to tell and it simply doesn't match the reader's perspectives or preferences. Great to keep in mind, but not as valuable as the feedback meant for your ideal reader persona. Also, girl, what a juicy blurb!! I love the character's motivations. From that alone, they seem likable and easy to root for. Natalie doesn't seem like a stereotypical rich girl who has her head up her butt and doesn't think friendship matters, rather I get the impression her life before uni made it hard to find authentic relationships (people who wanted her for her and not her money, status, her role, or something she "brings to the table"). So that makes it hard to find real friends all on her own. We also get great internal and external conflict with the "to be able to make friends I need to be passing my classes (which I'm not) and if I fail then my dad will ship me back home (and I wont get another chance to live life on my own terms)". This ups the urgency for her too and feeds directly into the LI. I really love Ryan seems focused and equally as desperate as Natalie, though I imagine he might struggle to empathize with her struggles at first. I also love they both have common ground with family struggles. I'm also already very curious how he lost his scholarship. If he's able to tutor someone, it's not because he's not doing well in classes, I wager. There are other ways to lose a scholarship, though. Like a bit of "bad" behavior, hm? Love the questions the blurb leaves me with! Also, I'm a sucker for the "they have chemistry but they come from different worlds" vibe <3 They seem like they'll have different opinions and viewpoints but similar values, which is a great set up for a solid relationship. I dunno if this helps, but it can help me to write out things as a blueprint first and then go back and make it look narratively pretty. What I mean by that is like describing how the place actually looks and then when I edit my draft I put all that in context to my character. I might put in "it looks run down" in my first pass, but then describe the scenery in a way that feels run down without saying it candidly to set the vibe and tone. Helps me get into my character's voice too. It feels less overwhelming in my process to do it that way and makes describing settings less daunting? Bc sometimes settings can be a huge pain to describe XD but taking it bite-by-bite hypes me up, personally. As for college dorms, I've been to 3 universities and the student living situation was similar but different everywhere. My first school was really small, so freshmen mostly stayed in the dorms and upperclassmen met people and lived in the various houses or apartment complexes around town. I was in a sorority and in the small school our house was also small so only 3 people lived there- the president, the property manager, and sometimes our VP or our ritual member (wow that sounds cult-y when I write it out like that). But in the largest school I went to, we had some "lore" XD Allegedly some lady paid the uni a huge sum of money back in the day to ensure sorority houses couldn't be built on campus? So the guys got mansions but the ladies had to use the dorms. The school did allow us to have a set of dorms in the very back of campus where sororities could claim a floor and let some of the ladies live there in a suite set-up- a common room (living and kitchen area) which all 4 of us shared, 4 separate bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. Different dorms can have different setups. I've shared a single bathroom with 4 people and shared a room with one other person before. Ive known people to share a common room but have their own room and bathroom. They're all priced differently too, which may matter in the context of your characters. Also, a uni I went to had an "honor dorm". I loved it because we had our own study area too so after the library closed I could still study if my roommate was sleeping. It was a super old campus and literally all the dorms were built off campus except for one which was original to the school. The only way you could live in it was if you got into the honors program and as long as you stayed in it then you could keep staying in the dorm. Sometimes lil stuff like that can make the uni feel more realistic and it can give insight into your characters too. Especially if like Ryan for example was living in a dorm for his scholarship and now he's in a situation where he has to get the money and graduate quick bc he's gonna be out of a living situation here soon. And reasons some characters that are friends or relatives may not live together might be bc one of them is in some sort of social club or group like a sorority while the other one is not affiliated with that group. I'll say too some dorms just look nicer bc they cost more or the people who typically live there get special treatment for whatever reason. The cheaper dorms I was in had worse pest control than the nicer ones, for example. Some of the upperclassmen on scholarships or in leadership roles stayed in a dorm where the bottom level were for the professor's offices and that building was really nice (despite being haunted af). Scene transitions can be tough. In my early writing, I had whacky pacing bc I was trying to fill gaps of what a character was doing before and after the meat of the scene. I studied screenwriting in college and it actually helped my novel writing a lot imo. Watching movies and TV shows and thinking how to cinematically do transitions helped me think about it in terms of my book writing. Super looking forward to your next vid, Jasmine! I recently found your channel but I already can't wait for this book :D

So ironic how I stumbled across your video. I literally just set up a tiiny writing nook in my bedroom right by the window last week. I have my main office in the den where I work from home for my regular 9 to 5 job, but for whatever reason, haven't been able to focus on writing in that room. I always felt I needed a more dedicated writing space...just something small with just my laptop keyboard and a space for a few other things on the desk so as not to feel too distracted with unecessary junk around me. Yours looks lovely.

Lol, I definitely had that scene where my characters just lounged and talked to each other. I didn't change the setting, though, I just added the character who likes to create chaos because she's super arrogant 🙃 But anyway, good luck with Chapter 4, Jasmine! p.s.: The big bow on your tree is so cute!
