Pocket 386 dies AGAIN (once and for all, on Friday, 13th)
ONCE AGAIN, the Pocket 386 modern retro computer DIED on me. Last time, the graphics card "went up in smoke", figuratively (no actual smoke involved - it just became super hot, then stopped working forever). Then, issues started to pop up around the monitor cable (to be shown in future videos). It would work if I "tinkered with it a bit", but now, not even that works. We are getting a No Signal message no matter what. I am actually irritated at its antics and fatigued with its exasperating quality issues. The idea of the machine is enchanting, the aesthetics supreme - and the execution, in terms of hardware engineering, is simply subpar. Not sugar-coating it: get one if nostalgia commands...

    I know well that sinking feeling when hardware just does not live up to my expectations. On my birthday this week, my Goddess wife took me out to visit the relatives. Of course, on these visits, they always manage to squeeze in a request to "just take a look at my PC, it runs so slowly". It turned out to be 2 laptops and a PC that I ended up looking at. But in exchange, they gifted me with 2 older machines they had stopped using because they were so slow. This morning when I finally took a look at the old PC, I found the onboard Ethernet was dead and the wifi card only supported IPv6. Truly weird. I dug into my little box of dongles and found an old wifi dongle which I persuaded to work . But that struggle this morning left me with an ache in my back from the stress. I REALLY hate Windows! There! I said it! Strangely, on the same PC, under Knoppix, that old wifi DOES work with IPv4, so it was just under Windows that it didn't work. I also learned that under Windows, if you only have IPv6, you can't access www.mozilla.org. Who knew? I _usually_ have more luck with these old machines, but I guess it's just the Black Friday bad luck today ... On the other hand, I have an old HP Mini netbook that runs FreeBSD 14.0 just fine! :) Thanks for sharing your struggles with these old machines! It does me good to know that I'm not the only person who does this.

    Did I miss something in this video? The top right of the larger ICs looks like it has a burn mark.

      @ninoivanov 19 часов назад

      Might you please be so kind and tell me a time and a more exact area? I do not think I burnt anything - I did, however, resolder the cable holder places. (The menu would still work, so I doubt I did anything wrong with the soldering.) Basically, the beginning of the video "is the end". (Originally, I had planned to show you as a beginning a fully functional, repaired machine - instead, things went just downhill.) So you can see from about the middle on, after the intro, how the chaos unfolded, also prior to soldering: a mess that merely blurts "No Signal".

    • @PvdDriesch
      @PvdDriesch 18 часов назад

      @@ninoivanovSure. I can see it at 5:37 for example. It is the big chip right below the connector. It might just be some glue stuck on the IC, but could also be a burn hole.

      @ninoivanov 18 часов назад

      @@PvdDrieschAh, THAT... Thank you for pointing that out - the surface is slightly scratched. What you see as "blacker" is the real IC body, under some sort of "varnish". It is totally superficial, and in all fairness, I would rather attribute this to my own handling of the innards rather than the machine's production.

      Clarence, in my eyes, you have always carried yourself in the comments as an intelligent man, and I doubt you did "who knows what bad thing to it". I, too, treated mine like a raw egg. This is the THIRD total death of such a machine over here: first, the Book 8088, then the graphics card (tried it again now, positively dead), now that thing with the cable. How INEPT can that hardware design be? My channel is tiny, the people owning that machine type are few - how likely is it that with your case, we have FOUR? Yeah, the reviewers may praise it - but guess what, I say, use it 50 times, and let us see, will they praise it STILL. You are about to see some "last adventures with it" in the future, as I did not yet publish all I did with it, but I also have to say, this is, by now, just disappointing.

    7:45 the display connector is half connected. I expect that was the issue with the not supported boot error. My rant, this is for young users of CRT monitors, not you Nino. Young people with nostalgia illness, particularly those who never used any of this technology, are sick… CRTs suck. They always sucked. First off the image on screen is distorted no matter what you do, you just have to try to make the distortion as even as possible. Next the colors are off and calibration took way too much time. Also, your white point was BLUE. This was particularly frustrating if you worked in graphics, print media, or photography. They were heavy and awkward. To this day I have back problems from lifting 21” CRT Monitors. The biggest part in the CRT monitor IS the CRT. The cathode ray tube is a consumable, meant to be replaced after time and the more they are used the worse they look. You young people have no idea how great it was to get genuine flat screen CRTs and how great it was to get LCDs a few years later. This whole “I game on a CRT because that was what the game was designed for” is cork sniffery or the most hard R kind The Emperor wears no clothes.

I ask you why I have a problem with my DM 602, which works but does not display the upper half of the first line of the screen. Pardon my ignorance: what is a DM 602? And - 386! That you must reopen this wound, *sigh* 😆 Happy you like it! And to be frank: no, no plan, totally in the dark. I was changing all capacitors on the board exactly behind the screen - and "most" others, judging that those at the end of CRT most likely control the ray, and the others "some other stuff". Of your "DM 602" is/has a screen, then maybe either the screen needs calibration / positioning of the image, or a cable is not fully attached (had that on a laptop: and if you press a specific place, the line appeared; my solution was to squeeze a matchstick under the bezel "to forever press that place"). I will now try to run it with a different machine…

    They are as unreliable as they can be. The only thing I regret about owning a Libretto is having a laptop with a Pentium MMX on which I can change the speed and multiplyer through DIP switches WHILE the machine is on, and it wouldn't crash, in a brittle, flakey case, which started disintegrating itself and not having 3d printed models to get a new case. Librettos are the real machines you should look for, they can be fixed with a soldering iron and wired up as one likes. Get us 3d prints.

      Thank you for mentioning that, that is, of course, interesting! - And what is annoying, as with the previous model, nobody seems to be selling replacement parts, either. You can get a Pocket 386 - but it does not seem you can get "just its graphics card".

    Have you plugged the CF card in properly? Have you tried reflashing the CF with the operating system again?

    • @ninoivanov
      @ninoivanov Месяц назад

      It is not the CF card at all, but I suspect the graphics card. I have tried booting it with the card of my Book 8088, which it did boot in a brief try, but it changed nothing. The fact if the matter is, I cannot access the BIOS - yet I should be able to, even without any card.

  • @tikkasen_urakointi
    @tikkasen_urakointi Месяц назад

    It probably does not detect the graphics card for some reason. May be a bad contact somewhere inside the laptop itself. Clearly it boots, because it gives those two short beeps and then one beep after that. It's just not displaying image.

    • @ninoivanov
      @ninoivanov Месяц назад

      Thank you! I think you totally made the right suggestion! I just took it apart. Re-fixing all cabling did not help at all. But interestingly, taking out thr graphics card and booting without it made no change in the situation - and one would expect that a working graphics card SHOULD make SOME change. So somewhere between the card and the monitor, or the card itself, there is the issue. Given I am getting no image even on an external monitor, I suspect the graphics card is dead. EDIT: plus, a second before it died, it actually displayed "the Windows desktop" as a squashed image in the upper right, all the more pointing to the graphics card…

      @@ninoivanov On many BIOSes that type of beep code that it gives before those two short beeps (which indicate that an error happened) mean that there is no display adapter. Many computers still boot normally after that and they can be used headless.
