This was an interesting and very informative conversation. And I salute Alex's work and hope to get my hands on his book. However from the interview it seemed that Alex, without realizing it, through his thesis reinforces certain vague stereotypes about undemocratic Arabs, while thinking that he's doing the opposite. There was little to no discussion of how local ruling and bourgeois classes in Egypt or Syria or Iraq, et cetera, as well as foreign governments support or install dictatorships through media, funding of political campaigns and repressive apparatuses, conspiring in coups d'État, demonizing opposition, sabotaging the economy and many other methods. Little mention of class, or of imperialism. So the logical outcome of the thesis is that "Arabs just didn't learn the lesson about dictatorship or one man rule and so that's why much of the MENA region is still subjugated by such governments," entirely overlooking the class and imperial interests that serve to prop up--and just as often CREATE--these dictatorial governments. So it leaves those in MENA and outside of it who wish to work in solidarity kind of disarmed politically. If all we have to do is get smart and not accept dictators anymore, then I'm afraid we are in for many more dictatorships, as this is not a solid enough plan for how to defend from autocracy and build truly representative and sovereign societies for the benefit of all Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis or anyone else. This is meant to be a respectful and comradely critique and hope it will be read as such.

As a Sudanese American to correct what you study about Sudan to summarize it for you so you can fix your opinion because I don't think so you saying it in the right way United States cannot choose for Sudan is outside agenda Elvis Denise knows this is United Arab Emirates agenda and other countries to have a demographic change to have those afro Arab desert to relocate to Sudan so United Arab Emirates they want a to control and divide Sudan demographic changes Sudan is number 5 as the richest country in the whole world 🌎 and as mentioned in the Bible and the Quran so it's not a fight between two generals no now because the United States not listening listening to only those people outside people like the freedom and changes now all the people United after a woman being raped and house is being taken we make the popular arm resistant all over Sudan helping Sudan Army for one nation never be know how United States is not Innocent and we don't like when Israel buried. srael buried nuclear waste on the beaches of Sudan, and it was the greatest betrayal of the people of Sudan. The commander of the Rapid Support Forces was involved in it and provided him with money and assistance it was not regular war they want to divide our country to control on natural resources what I'm telling you that we know we don't want the Army leaders Sudan in the past but not now now we all agree about one Army in the Army to be the ruler to rulers not those self-appointed leaders they don't represent us they call the name different names but unfortunately the prime Minister American prime minister believe on them and he's not an American prime minister anyway he is netanyahu prime minister and he said that he said I'm coming to the Middle East as Jewish I need to respect that I didn't see that even on Muslims was each other and the Palestinian issue 😮because to be divided we do not want the rebel we do not need handook previous Sudan prime minister he did not come with election he listened only for a certain group of people he is damaging Sudan so Hamadok don't represent us

Not everything about Nasserism was bad. He introduced the welfare state: free education and healthcare for all. In my world, that is a great thing and something we should certainly improve if we are ever going to get out of this fucking rut we are in in Egypt. However, he also introduced totalitarianism, nationalism, war and clientelism. Tantawi might not be an ideal candidate and i would certainly prefer Gameela Ismail, but i wouldn't be alarmed about his economic policies that much. It would never be on the scale of a military state. Anyways, i doubt we will have a real election in Egypt, at least not this time around. But, it is a good start.

You can not imagine how many of these guys used to come and ask for what Khomeini had promised to poor, needy "mostazaf" people. I will absolutely read the book ❤

Universal ambition, that is true. I lived entire 80s in Morocco. 8 years in Rabat, Ambasador's residence that had been transformed into embassy and many more hiden department. In fact my husband, young diplomat, born in Karbala, working many years in Foreign A. ministry speaking perfectly Arabic, had been sent there to exterminate King Hassan II, replacing by a guy of Shabiba, lived in Iran. Blessed be Egypt and far from mullahs reach

Many interesting points, and several agreeable or understandable. But some maybe some crucial points missing. (1) Saddle Dam being erected and filled next to GERD. Other planned dams? Impacts? (2) is there large dam planned in So Sudan on the White Nile? Hydrology and cooperation Impacts? (3) some news has been mentioned about a “water bank” for the Nile Basin. If so, how far along talks? Will it be commercialized? Who will sell/purchase water, and on what terms? (4) Please elaborate on provisions of 2015 Declaration of Principles on Nile-specifically the clause which could be interpreted to say right of exploitation is proportional to water contribution. [Principle IV, Clause h] Impact on negotiations? (5) Concerns that 2015 DOP dispute resolution mechanism is weak, one factor in why negotiations have dragged on fruitlessly. Please elaborate on how could informal talks proposed by Aaron could remedy or mitigate this. How could other formal instruments/assistance help? (6) the 2015 DOP adopts many provisions of 2010 Entebbe Agreement, including “equitable and reasonable utilization”. However vaguely this is defined, wouldn’t the DOP nullify or amend Egypt-Sudan bilat agmts? (7) one drawback to desalination is increased ocean salinity, with -ve impact on seafood stock and coral reef. Implications for food and tourism? How can these concerns be balanced with water need? (8) Gulf Arab agro-investments in Ethiopia (principally for their food security)? Impact on dams operation (increase in extraction)? Impact on Sudan and Egypt?

Thank you very much for your valuable reply. I’ll be recording another episode with Dr. Aaron soon (although this time virtually since I’m back in Egypt!) and I’ll make sure to raise some of these extremely important points. I would also greatly appreciate it if you go through other episodes as well-would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again and please stay in touch!
