COMPASSION FOR SELF AND THE RETURN TO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Loved this video lesson. It was spot on with my issues!!
Wonderful, Ken! 🙏
Discovering you made my day. Thank you for the pointer at the end about those who effort too much!
I’m so glad that you found my work!! 🙏
Due to allergies, I almost always have some post nasal drip, so this exercise is a God send for me. I use it every time I have to sing.
I love this exercise! Works every time to move the mucus out of the sinuses, off of the resonating spaces within throat and if by chance any has landed on folds themselves overnight, clear it away. Fantastic! 🥰
This is really helpful!!
I'm so glad, Sue!! Great work today!! 🙏
This is what I’ve needed my whole singing life!
I was just using this understanding with a few clients yesterday. Once I helped them coordinate the body mechanics a little bit, every single singer’s issues vanished. We cannot underestimate the power of gentle, consistent “sub-glottal” (below the vocal folds) air pressure. Feels like pure magic!!
When you hold and sing is your reset taking one breath for chest and mouth together? Or separate?
@@patsysexton7063 The reset would be one maneuver that will open the inner space of the mouth and simultaneously open the space of the lungs. If you breathe in through the nose once, you’ll feel the inner expansion of the ribs. Then, breathe silently through the mouth for the next one and feel that same open feeling. You might look at my Point of Suspension video in the Magic of You playlist. 🙏
Great video, Debra! Thank you! I was just trying to describe this to Colin....
@@lesliesmith4232 thank you!! 🙏
this is great! 😊👏🎶
Wow this is awesome of her
🙏
Thank you... really clear explanation!
Thank you so much!! 🙏
Yes! This is what I needed!
Wonderful, Lynn!! Happy Singing! 🙏
The world need a good teacher as you do.
Thank you so much!! 🙏❤️🥰
God! again and again, sorry teacher, but please! stop talking to yourself and explain methodology; the video is confused; no so many bla bla...but acurate explanatios; you laugh and I cry😅... opera student.
Please know that these are older videos…we all get better with practice. Use the Magic of You or The Bel Canto Buzz playlist if you want to see the work now…thanks for your feedback.
God! you are an excelent " magister"; but - I do not know if you have a microphone; but your voice, very sweet, is like a wisper, very difficult to understant, even you lower in some parts of your dialogue ( of one😢) very unconfortable to follow, sorry, but we should think we are going to be listen, am I clear enough, thanks and sorry😢
Thank you, yes have a new stronger mic now!! 🙏
This is what I've needed! I've been saying, the nasal breath helps me so much, but I can't sustain that when I'm singing (I can't breath in through the nose during a song!). Thank you, I'm going to be working on this!
Awesome!! Yes, the nasal breath only really works to show us physical alignment and feel where we want the breath to be focused in Bel Canto (the side and lower back ribs). Stabilizing the abdominal core before breathing in, helps establish the more equalized pressure that we are sustaining throughout each phrase. Keep that tummy stable throughout the breath process and now we are reinforcing the exact same breath sensation every time. Pretty amazing!!
You are a class act. Thank you for all you do
You are very kind, Lance! 🥰
Is this what some other classical singers call the "abdominal tuck"?
It depends on where in the breathing process they do it. If you empty your air, tuck in the tummy and then breathe, you will feel lower back ribs expand sideways. Then maintaining that tuck throughout song will reinforce more continuous engagement of ribs, throughout phrase and on breath resets. However, if you breathe in fully and then tuck in stomach, you will actually feel pressure in your throat. This is not Bel Canto usage. Helpful?
I LOVE this song ❤
I do, too. We may all need to hear this message…
The proof is in the music 🎶 so good! 🎉
I agree!!! ❤️
Yes!! I tried this and it feels so good 🎉 can’t wait for it to become automatic😊
Awesome!!! I usually just try to focus for a few phrases at a time on the core stability. Once I feel the consistency in my control, of both the torso stillness and the ease of singing, my brain starts to integrate the coordination. Rinse, repeat!! Good luck!! ❤
Effortless
❤️
Love it Debra. Love the updated insights. Always that magical, floaty feeling - Bel Canto is the gift that keeps on giving - especially years after one receives the training and keeps it going (i.e. don't give up on it!) - which I have with Debra!!🥰😃 Yvonne
🙏 Absolutely! Life-changing!! 🥰
Thank you so much for this priceless piece of info! I needed this as I was discovering this on my own but was still not quite clear about it...does the core stay taut even when you take in the new breath to sing? So it just movement of back ribs before each line?
You’re so welcome! Yes, you’ll notice that the lower back (lateral) and side ribs will pop out on each breath, in exactly the same way, as the core holds more steady. You can kinda think of it as the restriction of all movement, except rib expansion. Because the core then continues to remain stable, it helps the ribcage stay more expanded throughout the next phrase and so on, with each breath. Absolutely amazing results, once you get beyond the fear of not having enough air. Reality is…we can sing at a higher level of efficiency and sustain tonal accuracy with this process, as well as seemingly have more air for each phrase. 🥰
Your so right!
Ist es Ihnen möglich, bei diesem Video deutsche Untertitel zur Verfügung zu stellen? Vielen Dank und liebe Grüße!

@@user-pm5qq6lj5f So, it looks like there is a way for you to add German subtitles and then, having me approve them. However, RUclips is giving me challenges to offer that on these older videos. Is this condition something that causes a shaky voice? I love the exercise by the way it feels like it will actually help!
So, typically this condition causes more of an interruption of phonation. Shakiness could occur as well, but more likely excessive air pressure. The work n this video will also help that. Reach out, if you would like to do a consultation with me. I could then do a direct diagnosis…go to debralynn.org to contact me!

Thank you, Glenn!! Very cool!! 🥰
interesting
What nonsense . . .
Very interesting comment. Wishing you well in your singing! 🙏
Please let us hear what you sound like. That is the real proof of what you know,
If you go to my performances playlist, there are a few…🙏
So people actually learn new ways of breathing to get RID of vibrato? I have tried for 40 years to GET a vibrato.
Actually yes, especially in certain types of group a cappella singing. Although a singer having vibrato as a stylistic tool for emotional delivery in solo work or certain styles/genres can be desirable, this can be problematic for tuning groups when synchronization is important. Fundamentally, everyone has vibrato because we are vibrational instruments. What can be interesting to determine is whether vibrato is natural or forced…🙏
Thank you Debra ! I love your passion. I will be there :)
❤
Hi, I feel like I overuse my support when I think of it, and I feel tired fast in the phrase. I feel like I can't find the feeling, either I overuse my support or I don't use it at all. Do you have any tips?
Hi, Rosalie! So, my inner sensation of “support” is an open, buoyant suspension. When I take in an inaudible breath, there is a neutrality to my inner musculature. The key is to sustain that inner sense of space, maintaining the gentle sub-glottal air pressure below the vocal folds. It feels like I am singing on top of a suspended breath. If we press the muscles inward after that initial open feeling, we can overpressurize the vocals, causing a forced kind of tone and loss of air control at times…helpful? You might look at my Point of Suspension video under the Magic of You playlist. Thank you for reaching out! 🙏❤️🥰
@@DebraLynnBelCanto Thank you so much for answering, it was definitely very helpful! I do think that I tend to press the muscles in order to find the support, which gives the opposite result. I'll check the video out!
@@rosalie6468 Yes, as a matter of fact, yoga instructors or those that have very strong abdominal muscles, can inadvertently overpressurize without even trying. These mechanics are so very gentle...and what we feel is the true nature of support!! Magic!
@@DebraLynnBelCanto Funny that you say that, I’ve been doing pilates and yoga for a couple of years now and also have quite a naturally strong body for being a woman. I feel like I almost have too much awarness of my abdominal muscles, and pairing that with an overthinking mind… Very interesting facts I had no idea of!
@@rosalie6468 So, when you breathe in, be sure the breath is inaudible, open up to that point of suspension and feel how gentle that open space is. I'm singing on top of that suspended feeling!! Good luck. BTW, if you want to do a short consult with me, happy to double check your mechanics. Just contact me through my website!! Debra
I feel like for me it’s less mental, and more my voice just gets shaky, which then in turn makes me nervous. How do I stop the shakiness? It happens when I talk in front of others too. This has plagued me since I was very young, and no matter how much I perform, it doesn’t go away, so how do I get my breathing to stop it?
I think that it is a kind of “snow ball” effect, Lincoln. As the adrenaline hits and the heart races, our core fundamentally can be destabilized. As you know, it is hard to recreate that reaction on demand. Here is one way to get close. Run in place by only lifting your heels off the floor for 30 seconds to a minute. Then try singing. You may feel a similar reaction to the one triggered by nerves. Then, take a breath in thru your nose, hold for a couple seconds and then release. Do this a couple of times. See if you notice the heartbeat coming down. Some of the solution is feeling the rise in energy and then calming it down by focus of breath to the back. Engaging core can help too. Now, keep core engaged and try singing without moving abdominals, both on inhale and while making sound. The stabilization of your core will reinforce your expanded ribs, which in turn helps maintain fold closure, which helps steady the tone! Good luck. If you need more support you can always reach out to do a session with me! 🙏
@@DebraLynnBelCanto oh my gosh thank you so much! I’m going to try this today! This has plagued me for years and I have a performance this weekend so I’m desperate lol thank you!
Best wishes this weekend, Lincoln. I’ll share what my master teacher said to me…”your voice will be there when you need it.” Trust yourself and remember that your audience wants you to do well!! They are cheering you on! ❤
Very helpful! :)
Wonderful!!! Thank you for your feedback! 🙏❤️🥰
Hey Debra, I’m new to singing, and I had some questions. I wanted to know what sensation I should feel while singing. I think you mentioned it before but I was confused. I feel that open sensation when taking the breath and holding it, like where you explained that the stopping point is the vocal cord closure. As soon as I start singing, should that feeling I got at the stopping point stay there? If the feeling goes away, then what exactly ARE my vocal cords doing? Does that mean they’re too open? Thanks!
Hi! Glad you found my work. So, in a basic way, when everything is coordinating effectively, there is never any sensation in the throat in this work. If you feel that gentle pulling backward sensation at the point of suspension, see if you can feel that stay stable as you sing a phrase. If you can, this sort of reinforced suspension is what I’m stabilizing. If you can’t feel that inner back space of mouth easily, then focus on just remaining open and sing a phrase. When you gently, but fully breathe in to the point your muscles stop moving and reinforce that openness, sing a phrase while maintaining. You may start to notice that your breathing mechanics are easier and that you aren’t feeling any tension or constriction in throat. If you lose it, just try again. Be gentle with self…and slow down the entire preparation. When I say “be a cello, not a bellow,” it refers to the mindful opening of the inside space of you and suspending that structure within…then, hold still and sing as if spinning sound with your open mouth space. Always happy to do a quick consult…just reach out to me through my website at DebraLynn.Org. Good luck with your singing journey!! 🙏
PS if you are reinforcing the open space, the folds are remaining more approximated or closed. If you feel a lot of air moving out of you (place hand in front of mouth to feel), then they are less connected…
@@DebraLynnBelCanto OH Also I’m ordering your book from Amazon today! I want to take time to read it first!
Reach out whenever you’re ready… 🙏❤️🥰
@@DebraLynnBelCanto Okay, actually I do have one more question. I heard you mention sensations in the ear, and I’ve read about other people having issues having their ears pop while singing (without unpopping) which causes them to struggle to hear- similar to when we go on planes. Is the sensation in the ears that you’re talking about the contraction of the muscles used to un-pop our ears? Is it the same as contracting those muscles and holding it? Thanks!
Impressive evidence! Heck, I perked up and smiled as soon as the after version started. I bet public speakers would love working with you! PS - loved the name, Dewey Singam and Howe 😂
I agree! It was an amazing moment. The shift between forcing the voice and understanding how to stabilize it is powerful stuff. This work definitely has application in the speaking world! Anyone who uses their voice! Thank you for your comments!! 🙏🥰❤️
Too much talking!

Hi, Paul! That can occur so easily. One of the beautiful things about this work of mine is that we are able to stabilize our air more gently. This is huge for helping us eliminate tension completely. You might look at my free app - Debra Lynn Bel Canto. The two tutorials in it are the comprehensive explanation of how these mechanics work. Happy to assist you. Yvonne has been diligently embracing these principles. The freedom you hear in her is caused by internal stability and sustained space. Good luck with your singing. You can reach out to me here or through DebraLynn.org. Blessings!! ❤
@Debra Lynn This is beautiful.. I wish to someday have such great control over my voice and sing correctly, struggling so much with tounge tension and breath control and after 4, 5 songs my throat starts tightening and being painful. It's so tricky and puts me down

@@DebraLynnBelCanto Hi thank you.I have sent a message. Here is a song I wrote if you would like to have an idea of the challenge :) I don't think we are allowed to put links. The song is called Song for Hannah.
It reminds me of how I breathe when cycling. That is, when i'm climbing a long, steep hill and establishing a rhythm, my mouth is in almost an E or A vowel feeling. The feeling is very relaxed yet full and easy. Nothing is really engaged, if that makes sense.
Exactly, Joshua! I sometimes describe the sensation like a poised, buoyant one, where that feeling is then just gently suspended throughout each phrase…riding on top of a cushion of air pressure! 🙏
