The timing of the pause at 1:58 … immaculate. You can literally see him boiling down every possible response and decision and what could potentially happen if he said something else. I’d like to think he already found another solution at that point. But it was important to not burn the bridge (Vasquez) right there and then. Ultimately, he decided to pick another battle down the line, but play nice and at least leave the meeting with disgruntled acceptance. His initial reaction was indeed genuine, but you can see him needing to cool the temperature before he left the room, was very important for what will be relayed to President Walker when it gets back to him.

No other TV show is like this. Forget Grey's Anatomy, forget The Good Doctor... those are usual day-to-day medical stories, while "The Knick" was bold enough to showcase a period where technology was just starting to crawl on its knees... everything was new, revolutionary AND scary back in 1900. An age of medical discoveries, in which this TV series masterfully delivers to us. I would love to see another TV series following in the same steps about a different hospital, though. But I know that won't happen anytime soon...
