Marcie Mayer // Life in Greece
Греция
Добавлен 7 янв 2007
Hello-I’m Marcie, a Californian living in Greece since 1984!
I’m glad you found my channel, it’s full of variety. First, there are videos about the 115 year old stone house I am renovating. I am on a tight budget and the renovation is going to take awhile. But I'm not stressed about that because I have so many projects on Kea island where I've been living since 2000. I am a researcher and practitioner of eating acorns from Oak trees. My small Acorn Cookie company is considered the pioneer in the recent resurgence of mainstream interest in acorns and their role for our future. I'm also a loom weaver, antique furniture restorer and e-bike enthusiast. I practice daily yoga and I've written two books. I speak Greek fluently and have never really done the expat thing.
I upload a variety of content from all my projects and continue to build a truly unique and authentic RUclips channel. Please subscribe & share, it’s so helpful & FREE. I love reading your comments.
Thanks,
MM

Marble Counter is Way Off
This week Markos returns for a day of work. We are scheduled to install a big skylight window but I soon find out the roof needs so much prep before we'll actually be ready to get the window up there. Sadly, high winds came up and it was impossible to continue working on the roof. October is actually the busiest month of the year for me as I welcome volunteers to help me collect acorns on Kea - more about that next week!

Boxing up after being somewhere twenty years is quite a task. I consider myself a constrained consumer and yet I have acquired plenty of stuff. This is going to take awhile especially since there are so many other things going on as well. Join me for a busy and productive week on Kea and near Lavrio. I take a big step forward with the help of two professional painters at the old stone house ren...

I am very invested in protecting Oak trees and promoting the mighty acorn as an amazing food source, I am thrilled to add yet another use for abundant acorns - as a natural wood stain. I let my intuition lead me to this place and I am very pleased with the results. This week I go over to the house to recalibrate the watering system and to paint some test samples of my homemade wood stain. I love all things from acorns and I am really glad to be taking Acorn Extract to the next step by painting my Living Room/ Kitchen ceiling with it. I tell you how I make Acorn Extract and ways this by-product from Acorn Flour processing can be used as a valuable 2nd inco...
Working on my Industrial Ceiling

I only have a day and a half to do some errands and get the first ceiling beams painted. These beams are 240mm x 70 mm x 4500mm - they're BIG. It is a good thing I like painting although this is a job I have been dreading for some time. I considered buying scaffolding to make the job easier but the price was prohibitive. In any case, running up and down the ladder is a great workout. Have a gre...

I returned to my village a couple days after the evacuation order during the big forest fire that entered the village. The helicopters are still working although it seems the fire is mostly contained. This week I am doing more preparation to get ready for painting the interior. I still have problems with my neighbour but she has no idea how patient i can be when it comes to dealing with difficu...

This video was mostly shot in one very busy day. I decided to finally get some old wood out of the way by making it into a door. Its finally time to put the plant trellis up in the back garden but this leads to a new problem with my neighbour. Last Sunday I removed all the fire hazards from around the house, like old pallets, as if I knew what was coming later that day. I big fire swept through...

This video was shot over the course of 6 very tense hours. On Sunday June 30th there were over a dozen wildfires raging at the same time in Attiki. One of the largest of those fires was in my village. As I watch the fire get closer, my mind played over all of the work and energy that has gone into making this house, it was an overwhelming day and I’m relieved to say my house is fine. Thanks for...
E49 TOTAL TRANSFORMATION
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 месяца назад
This week we finally get back to the garden shed. I take care of upgrading the doors and window and Markos the Master of Plaster once again turns an old ugly set of walls into a very sturdy and attractive space. I've always liked the Mediterranean habit in the villages of having a separate utility room for laundry, storage, pantry and more. My bike garage/laundry room was not something I had pl...

Hello. This week I am using upcycled wood to create the wooden platform for my little loft. Rather than go to IKEA, I ordered a bed online. The bed that arrived had nothing to do with the quality described on the ad and I got pissed! Meanwhile, Markos has begun plastering the back wall of the house. There is a big transformation taking place and I hope you'll keep watching as the house emerges....

Hello! Ok, I must admit, I was a bit discouraged with my old Greek house renovation project and feeling somewhat upside down until I rummaged through old photos and remembered just how far I have come. I suppose it is my nature to do very well in a crisis but then to lose my courage after the worst is over. But alas, the worst is over and this week I want to share with you the amazing progress ...

Thank you! I live in the US and my acorns have a pappery skin on the that is very hard to remove... I'm wondering if I can leave it on? I think I did the first year I processed my acorns into flour which turned out delicious..... Thank you so much! Lori- 🧡🌹
Leave it on! It will give your flour a darker color.
Oh my god, got any left? 😮😅
Sooo tasty!
Hello my friend. Im quite curious as to the anger your neighbor is displaying towards you. There must be more to this story. Was her patio always open and you are blocking her and closing her in? Was your property a former relatives of hers and she is upset about you changing things? Ofcourse you realize that when it comes to land and property Greek people do not give up even an inch. People are calling her names. That isnt fair as they do not understand the culture and we do not know the history of these properties. Tred carefully my friend.❤
I completely agree, people need to stop being so angry and upset. There is no need for drama, there seem to be special circumstances and everyone needs to calm down! Thank you for your comment.
❤❤ good job!❤❤
I ❤️ acorns
I just want to say you have inspired me ever since I was a little girl. I used to come with my family every summer (we own a house at Ioulida) and I was in owe of all the work you did! I even visited once with my boyfriend and got some of your cookis, they were delicious. So proud to see amazing women doing amazing things 🎉❤ All my love!
Thank you Katia, that means so much coming from someone who personally knows of my work with Oaks and acorns!
The weather looks lovely and so does your home. Best wishes for a wonderful harvest!
5:15 not ευαίσθητο but εύθραυστο
Good luck with the harvest 😊
That woman next door must be a real witch. If it's on your property what right does she have to touch anything. You need to get a video camera to show her doing things to your stuff. So sorry you have to go through this. ❤

Renovations are hard no matter what. But in a foreign country. I’m glad you seem to speak the language… or it seems. But I know Idd never do it. Mainly because I love Canada with all my heart.
I have been in Greece for 40 years, I speak the language and I became a naturalised citizen so it truly is home now.
I am kind of new to your channel. I was wondering if it is possible to put up a security camera in your garden? Not sure about the rules in Greece?
I am kind of new to your channel. I was wondering if it is possible to put up a security camera in your garden? Not sure about the rules in Greece?
That is the plan!
I'm sorry I always look for hazards but the glass window just under the water container or solar panel made me nervous! I'm not sure what it is but it surely looks heavy. What if a terrible wind blows and makes it fall? I just hope it's very well secured. As for your garden you can use straw, dried grass, broken twigs, pruning cuttings, leaves and organic waste from your kitchen, to cover or mix with the soil, which will keep it's moisture that way, get full of nice worms and finally you'll have rich soil for your plants. You can always add more and more of those on top. Mulching!
The water heater looks much more precarious than it actually is!
You are one hard worker Marcie 😊
Weirdly, I like hard work. Saves me from having gym fees!
Almost there, looks great! Love your metal stairs. I have a similar contraption made of wood , to get to my mezzanine bedroom. Excellent idea when space is limited. Slightly jelly now Marcie, my plywood version is not nearly as chic as your metal one. Learn how to weld, added to bucket list. Καληνύχτα και καλή εβδομάδα.
I did not weld the stairs myself, I have an amazing welder here!
After going through almost all your videos, I have now subscribed and happy to accompany you through your unique story telling experience. Born on Crete, raised in Montreal, Canada, studied at FIT in NY and have lived in Cali, so I get your energy & admire your drive. I'm a creative in the fashion industry, avid bonsai hobbyist, and raise, breed and sometimes consult on Discus freshwater Amazonian fish and biotopes. As they Greeks say, " Gieas ta Xeria sou" - Bless your hands. You've done an extraordinary job with this project, going the extra necessary mile in every instance. It really does suck that you have had to deal with a nasty neighbour, it does make an already laborious endeavour even more difficult. I don't know her but if I may offer my Greek male opinion on your neighbours likely issue(s) ( coming form someone with an all female up bringing and one who's in touch with and embraces his feminine side. I'll let you draw your own conclusions with that, lol ). Marcie, you are inspiring, industrious, resilient, smart, talented and like you mentioned in one of your videos, " They're not quite sure how to deal with a woman who wears steel toe boots and works on a construction site ". This comment perfectly exemplifies why your neighbour likely despises you. She's probably threatened by your non-conforming female role that she's probably experienced or known. You make her feel uncomfortable and likely envious with your accomplishments. "Haters be hatin'" , you just go girl! Your cat is adorable and likely thinks you're nuts talking to yourself about not having any tea in the house. Never tried PB & Apricot, I will give it a try. Sending you positive vibes from Montreal. ❤
Thanks so much for your kind and supportive words, and thanks for subscribing!
Lots of projects❣️ it will keep you going. I am older, couldn’t do all that climbing anymore. Love to watch your plans👍🏻💜👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Marble is porous so it absorbs stains. If it had a seal maybe it would have helped but even that is not guaranteed. The stain is there to stay!! Seal it really good and do a regular seal application once a year.
The only relief I have watching your video is not hearing another horrible British accent.
Compost toilet..no smell no chems..
How r things with ur neighbor? Have u asked others in the area of why is she this way? Didn’t ur realtor tell you about her?
My realtor did tell me about her but I loved the house too much to listen!
Its looking great so far and it will be perfect when it will be finished.Amazing job!!Oh..i love strawberry 🍓 marmalade!!
I’ll try to remember when I make strawberry marmalade next spring!
The ship might be "The Golden Horizon"
Try baking soda mixed to a paste, applied and covered in cling film for 24 hours, it might draw out the stain. x
The men use it the most they need to clean it they made the mess. I can just imagine what it's like cleaning up after all those men there just in general not even referring to the toilet situation!
InterCare Marble and Travertine Cleaner, Natural Stone & Terrazzo Liquid Cleaner, Shower & Tile Surface Care, Floor, Walls & Countertop Cleaner and Degreaser, 32 oz Amazon has it in usa.
It’s looking great so far, really like all those windows along the front too.
To get the marble stains out you need to use a poultice-based marble stain remover. Works like a charm by sucking out the stain. Lots of info about this online..
baking powder and hydrogen peroxide (oxygene) left overnight covered in plastic worked for me.
@@s.k.3891 I was once tasked with restoring a Saarinen marble top dining table that had been heavily stained , surface damaged, and very neglected.Yes, that works. Use a Peroxide that's stronger than the usual 3%, that will get most stains out. For tougher stains, I've used 30% Creme hair salon bleach, also with baking soda. The key is to cover it, like you mentioned. I've used Saran wrap. Make sure you don't use any plastic store bags with a logo or print as this will transfer onto the marble. Still needed a little elbow grease ( pardon the pun ) , wet sanding, from heavy grit to very fine, then polishing and finally the sealant. It'll be worth the work.
Muriotic acid maybe? You may want to find a penatrating sealer for the stone that way the capilery structure would be treated in a way that nothing can penetrate deeply.
Construction workers are notorious for "stacking" the toilet. I am sorry you had to deal with that.
Bleach is what you need
@@SuperHaptics I tried bleach off camera…
Try putung strong bleach and leaving it stay for a day
Hi Marcie I enjoy your videos and curiosity is getting the best of me so I have a few questions....why are you moving? what you are going to do with your old house, are you going to keep the old house on the island? Are you going to keep making cookies after you move? How far away are you from your daughter? Do you ever go back to visit in USA? I hope you and your neighbor can somehow become friends, bc having angry destructive neighbors sucks. Maybe she needs a friend. You can overcome evil with good! You are an inspiration, please keep up the great videos! :)
The island house belongs to my ex-husband. I will continue my acorn cookie business although I hope to sell at some point since i'm nearing retirement age.
@@lifeingreece Αχ! Dear Marcie! You are a pioneer and a visionary! Have you had offers from people who might like to continue your work? Is not your daughter interested? And I also have a question: is your daughter half Greek?
What a beautiful home! Please be careful of kitty with that suspect neighbor...
Luckily, she loves animals.
Great Job Marcie! You're forever Inspiring!!!!
If the front green windows are in OK condition you can ask for them to get re-painted and even place double glaze heat-repelling glass in them. It will be substantially cheaper than ordering new ones.
Good advice, thanks!
You have probably already addressed this, which I have not heard. What are your plans for the floor?
The plan is to have slate stone floors throughout. I love stone floors!
Dear Marcie. For your stain on the marble try turpentine, white spirit - νέφτι. Maybe soak a piece of cotton and leave it for a while on top of the stain or after applying the spirit, dust it over with some talcum powder and let it soak up the dirt. As for the windows you want to change I should think it is wiser to leave them for next year and focus on the needed ones to close the house before the rains. It seems November will be cold with a lot of downpours. You have October to do your urgent outdoor jobs.
Thanks for the stain advice. I am only buying the windows and doors I absolutely need now. They should be ready by November!
@@lifeingreece someone mentions bleach. That works very well on marble but I try to use it as little as possible as it is terrible for the environment
Hi, Marcie. Found this on Google. Give it a try. “How to get wood stain off marble? Step 1: Make a thick paste out of baking soda and a small amount of water. Step 2: Smooth the paste over the stain and cover it with plastic wrap. Step 3: Let it sit for 24 hours. Step 4: Remove the plastic and wipe off the paste with a damp cloth.” -V
Wow, thank you - I'll try it!
@@lifeingreece Cross your fingers.I use this method with dish detergent rather than water in order to clean the terracotta water stains on our balconies. Works for that pretty well.
@@lifeingreece mind dear Marcie this awful hydrochloride acid you have there! It's terribly erosive. I expect you know this...
Cumquat marmalade is the bees knees !
How is your next door neighbor?
Fortunately, all calm for now.
Maybe take her some baking round, make a friend of your neighbour if possible, then no disputes hopefully
@@bromptinowner763 I showered her with packages of Acorn Cookies until the day I somehow became a trigger for her!
Oh man. I used to think I was tough. Sometimes I get so discouraged because I’m strong, but sometimes not strong enough. You are such a shining light to me💕💕 and wow! So beautiful what you are doing!
I would make the workmen clean out the loo 🤢 Just love the metal paint. So nice Dickie has immediately settled in.
