Kevin Newsome, AKA Reckless Abandon
США
Добавлен 23 июл 2019
I'm not a hiker, I'm just a man with a camera and an unexplained desire to torture myself amongst the elements. I geared up, kissed my wife goodbye, and took off on the adventure of a lifetime. This is my journey.

Just finished the kindle version. Fell into a rabbit hole when you posted the link on facebook. My son is section hiking. Great read!
Thank you, @vickiclark5924! Your son will no doubt return with a big grin and his own set of endless stories!
STILL makes my eyes misty.
Did you ever have an issue with finding a grocery store along the way? I always thought id be sending a bunch of packages to myself as well.
No problem at all. Every town had a Dollar General, Walmart, or grocery store, and you’ll hit a town every four to six days. It was much more convenient and less expensive to buy on the trail instead of shipping boxes and you’d only buy exactly what you need to get to the next resupply point.
@@kevinnewsome-recklessabandon That is a massive weight off my shoulders! Thanks for the info! I assume that fuel canisters are available along the way as well?
@@Lifesvagabond Yes, plenty of 4 & 8 oz cans along the trail. A lot of outfitters in many of these towns.
@@kevinnewsome-recklessabandon I'd imagine these towns along the way would cater to hikers. I've done a lot of the AT but it's been 20 years ago. Lol I greatly appreciate the info!!
You were supposed to take it easy and let your leg heal. Sitting with your leg elevated would have been alright!
No good places to sit at that hostel inside, only outside and it was too COLD! Lol
I’m glad it all worked out. I’m enjoying watching your videos.
What brand was your backpack?

I just finished your book. I loved it! I am basically chapter 1 you right now. I was a city slicker living in Milwaukee for 20 years (with no vehicle so not leaving the city much). I finally moved out of the city last spring and discovered the Ice Age Trail. And let me tell you buddy - I AM ADDICTED! I just can’t get enough out there. It is so peaceful and free. I had knew Wisconsin had amazing nature but I’ve seen so many things just this summer that I had no idea…like National Geographic level stuff…where right there. All day at work in my cubicle all I can think about is the trail. I am logging my miles and increasing my distances. Your book was just really inspiring for me. Quickly into your book I decided to start planning my first overnight on the IAT and I am super pumped. I am so jealous of your opportunity! What an adventure! And also doing it at your age gives me great hope. I have about 18 years left in my cubicle but my current plan is to leave on the AT on day one 😄. In the meantime, I hope to section hike all of the IAT here in Wisconsin over the next few years. Thank you for writing your lovely book. You are an inspiration to us all.
Thank you, Sean! I know exactly where your heart is right now and it’s an exciting feeling, planning and looking forward to a big hike. Your shakedown hikes will help you develop the skill sets needed for the big hike, keep it up!
Reckless, as commented on one of your other videos, I completed my AT thru hike this year; turning 67 at Harpers Ferry. Really liked your RUclips channel - funny and lighthearted and not afraid to make fun of yourself. Got the book (to support you) and read the entire think last night while sitting in our small RV on a three week trip. Brought back lots of memories; some good and some not so good. I’ll be honest, I’ve enjoyed your videos much more than the book. Didn’t see much of your funny side in the book but maybe my perspective was a bit off since I completed the trail this year. It would definitely be valuable for anyone planning their 2024 hike.
So glad you found some value in the videos! Having completed your own thru hike, your perspective is more in tune to what I experienced than most. I appreciate your kind words, my friend.
Thank you
Thanks Hero
Thank you
Epic
Awesome book!!! Loved it!!
Thank you!!
Wow, wow, wow. This is my all time favorite summiting video. Fantastic! Congratulations on your achievement and many thanks for the extraordinary effort you put in to sharing your experiences and making these videos.
Produce bags and Shamwow!!! Excellent!
Great tips!!!
Daddy long legs definitely lost a little weight since I last saw him at Grayson Highlands
Wow, nice to see daddy long legs and honey bun again. Thanks again for filming your 2021 hike.
Just read your book, now I'm watching the videos. Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I live in PA near this area. Cumberland valley. The crops you were wondering about? Soy beans.
I’m clueless about crops unless it’s oranges (Floridian) lol. Glad you enjoyed the book!
I remember that self serve store! That was a nice treat, but it looks like you missed the cookie lady?!? thanks again for all these wonderful videos of the hike.
It was too early for the cookie lady, she wasn’t due to open for business for another half hour so I just kept moving. Lol
When I remember NY state I remember water the color of ice tea, tannin from the decaying trees.
The SNP❤
Thanks for taking the time to film and produce your video's.
Enjoyed the book and am looking forward to reliving the hike through your series. Gramps AT21
Kevin - your video was a bit of inspiration for me. I started my own AT through hike on 16 Feb 2023 and hit the summit of Mt. Katahdin on 18 July, just about five months and two days. I’m an old guy as well and in fact I turned 67 on 1 May at Harpers Ferry. It was a hell of an experience, restored my faith in humanity, met some great people - through hikers, section hikers and a host of Trail Angels and have some great memories.
Congratulations, Thru Hiker!!! So great to see us Boomers representing on such a tough trail!
I found your videos from the book! I will watch the videos after I finish it. Great so far! planning on hiking it in 2029 when I retire!
It’ll be the adventure your body and mind needs.
i bought book and really enjoying it. You are like the 6 Million dollar Man. bionic. congratulations.
Now that’s funny! And thank you!
Lol protein
Just amazing!
Enjoying your book.
Excellent! Thank you!
Watching this today as my son “Stickers” is climbing Katahdin. He started Feb 18. Watching your videos last year helped me mentally prepare. Watching along with his journey this year was a joy. Thank you !!
Congratulations to you and your son (families deserve a lot of credit!). This trek will serve him well in life!
@@kevinnewsome-recklessabandon thank you!
Just one question. Why go with the unscented bath soap?
One less thing to attract bears, I suppose. I can tell you that just one of those bottles lasted the entire hike. There was always plenty of free soap in the hostels and motels, the Dr Bronners was only used while on the trail and never near a water source.
Would a length of paracord for hanging stuff to dry be worth the weight?
Absolutely, 15’ is plenty. Get the waxed cord so it doesn’t absorb water.
Just finished your book! Really enjoyed it! . 😊
Thank you! Wish I could do it all over again!
Would a length of paracord be worth the weight for hanging wet gear?
I found a piece about 15 feet long on the trail somewhere in northern VA. I used it about a dozen times for hanging clothes out to dry, and more than once in Mahoosuc Notch to drag my pack through tunnels, and once climbing out of Lehigh Gap to pull another hiker’s pack up so he could climb without it. 15’ should do it.
I follow a couple RUclips AT hikers every year and heard about your book this year (2023) while watching Renee/Couch to Trail. I read your book and had so many laugh out loud moments, that of course, I had to look up your channel and binge watch all the videos of your hike which resulted in more moments of laughter. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book and following up with the videos. I learned so much from you that I had never heard or seen before in any other books or videos. I hope to hike the AT one day once my kids are raised and out of the house, but until then I am living vicariously through everyone else. Thank you for the wealth of information about the AT along your journey and I really enjoyed your positivity and joyful moments.
This is the best compliment and book review! Thank you so much! Post that to Amazon reviews, pleeeze!!! Lol And I look forward to following YOUR hike one day, too!
Great read!!! Thanks for sharing your story!
So glad you enjoyed it! Have you hiked much (or all) of the AT?
That intro was amazing. Great video!
What an awesome channel!
This video is so fun! Thank you for the knowledge!
You would be great on Survivor!!
Thank you, still applying!
This was helpful. I’m 65 with a slightly younger “boyfriend” starting the AT sobo July 1st. This is the first video on your channel I have watched. Now I’m going to watch them all so I can learn about what I am in for. TY
If you're going SOBO, you are both feared and revered by the NOBO crowd. Prepare to be treated as a celebrity, be patient with them, you will possess the intel they seek and they will inundate you with questions. And you're going to have the adventure of a lifetime! Happy Hiking, my friend!
Nice!😊
LOVE your videos…straight forward, to-the-point, packed with information. Thank you for sharing! 😊
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them!
😂😂😂
AWESOME!!! I'll get an autographed book, and I definitely want you to narrate the audiobook!!!
Thanks, Nathan!
Congratulations!!! Just ordered ebook
Thank you, Christy!
Just finished....a great read and for those interested in the AT or more importantly for anyone planning the journey, a by-the-mile, blow-by-blow. Great whit and humor. And also a nod to the kindness and generosity of strangers on trails everywhere. As someone who followed your RUclips posts during your walk, it was great to remember it once again!
Thanks, Mike! Really appreciate the kind words!
Congratulations!
I've just finished the first 50 pages and have found it to be the read I fully expected by Reckless Abandon. The chapter on Pooping reveals the humor about the most mundane and common daily tasks one normally takes for granted. Well done and looking forward to taking up the rest of the story!
So happy you’re enjoying it! Nothing like a good poop in the woods to start your day off right!
How about that! You wrote a book of your adventures. I am proud of you man. Can’t wait to see what you have to say about laundry rooms, and urgent care facilities!
I'm first in line for 2 autographed copy. One for me and my co worker!! You are such an awesome story teller so I just know its going to be great! 👏!! Let me know how to pay you and I will be waiting paitently!! Oh update we have listed our house so we can begin working towards dream of a thru hike!!
