How I forge Damascus by hand.

This billet is made up of a total of 5 layers The outside layers are 15n20 (3/32”) The center layers are 33 layers of alternating 15n20 and 1084. (3/32”) The core materal is 1084 (5/32”) The billet is forged completely by hand.

    How did your live stream go? I've been thinking about doing a giveaway as well, but ran into the same roadblocks as you have. Old hickory forge (thoughts and prayers!) uses patreon to manage his giveaways. I haven't checked, is it possible to set a 0 dollar donation amount and use it for our giveaway information?

      @Little_River_Forge I subscribed because I liked what you were doing, shoot you inspired me to try welding literally today. I seen you hand doing patern welded steel by hand and said, yep it's time lol. After I welded the 2 pieces I forge welded them then did a taco and made a Keychain knife... small small billet lol. Thanks man you already did more for this Smith than any other channel

    Another tip since you lost the 15n20 jacket because of it being so thin try doubling it up next time and put 2 layers of 15n20 for the jacket then your damascus and core. Just an idea. I like the way the pattern came out.

      @@cae2487 I do too, it was supposed to be two billets of twist but one failed. This one was a last minute salvage attempt to use the billet

      I use Old Hickory Forge hammers. Sadly John was hit very hard by hurricane helene. Lost his shop his home and more.

    I really love watching Damascus being made by hand. I'm a new smith myself and I don't have the fancy power hammers or hydraulic presses that the big shops have so to see this kind of thing done by hand is a real pleasure! And you now have a new subscriber.

    I heard John from old hickory forge was in hospital in bad shape and his fiancé is missing. Any news on that?

      @@richardbryant7972 yes, sadly she was taken by the storm. John is in hospital I believe and his home and shop was all lost. The community have started a go fund me for him to help him recover and help him put together a life after this disaster

    I like the 3d effect of the Damascus over the 10 series steel. How many layers was the twist?

      Around 25-30 layers I did a stack and added some as I restacked

    How wide was the billet before you forged it? I plan on trying this soon so I'm watching all the "by hand" videos. Super happy to see this pop

      @@AP.Custom.Forgeworks I did 1 1/2” flat bars 5/32” thick I believe they were all around the 6” length mark. Usually when I do smaller billets that’s the size I go for. After you get them nice and clean on the grinder I soak my billets with WD40 before going in the fire.

      @Little_River_Forge nice. I'm going to use what I got here and try it out but it will be 3/16 1095 and 3/32 15n20. I feel like my first attempt will be interesting so use the 1095 cut off lol. Thanks again man

      @@AP.Custom.Forgeworks clean your material around 120grit soak with wd40 and wipe clean after you get it welded up soak it with wd40 again. Let your forge get super hot, put your billet in and roll it every couple of minutes and your first weld pass should take nice with no flux.

      @Little_River_Forge I bought diesel for the soak based on others a while ago. I do have lots of wd so I'll make 2 billets and try them both. The will be small anyway since hand forge so if they both work I can combine the 2 or do different patern attempts. I'm also trying a no weld tie wire attempt lol. Wish me luck you might hear me cuss from Washington lol

    Despite pretty much loosing the outer layer, I really like the final result. I've tried go-mai a couple times with similar results, but have learned how to do it better next time, I think. I'd love to see yours finished one day.

      @@aviweisbach7816 yea the whole outer layer is gone it was too thin to start with. With San Mai’s and go Mai’s the thicker your starting layers the better

      @@richardbryant7972 thanks, I have a press but it’s in pieces at the moment. Hopefully it will be finished soon. But setting by hand is the best way to feel when it’s solid for sure. Can’t beat the old way.

    Nice work brother! Hidden tangs are tough… it just doesn’t feel natural making one…. Keep it up though! The more you do the better you’ll get!
