I saw this film about half a dozen times in IMAX in Palisades NY during its run and that screen is absolutely HUGE and it was AWESOME. The soundtrack was blisteringly awesome. It was legit amazing.

Good synopsis of the 2... no 3... No 4 Different versions of the films. I grew up with the video tapes, and can really appreciate the advancements Lucas did for sci-fi with the original trilogy. That said, I wish so much that they would make a final fan cut of the films. Take out Jabba from IV, take out some of the CGI Scenes that do nothing to the story, but keep the updated space battle CGI elements. Or like with Empire keep the updated cgi backdrops in cloud city... And for Golly sake get that singing scene out of Return of the Jedi and put the original back in. That would be the best of both worlds taming down the 'Special Editions' to only scenes that benefit not ones that just add now dated flash.

You totally overlooked us 80's and 90's kids at the 12 minute mark, you didn't say the VHS home video tapes when mentioning the DVD's ;-) I was born in the early 80's, and my Star Wars was the 3 VHS box set where George Lucas started each film with a 10ish minute long interview talking about the movies. That was the original versions outside of A New Hope getting the Episode IV treatment in the scroll... And it was cropped to hell... But that's my Star Wars lol.

I don't mind the changes to Cloud City because it just replaced a fakey looking background with a less fakey looking background. But adding scenes to the original Star Wars makes those scenes stand out as additions after the fact.

Hi there. I personally don’t think it’s entirely as bad as you suggest. I’ve used Topaz for a few years on and off, and seen the various things it can and can’t do, and come to understand that it’s just a tool like any other filter or tool in your kit. I think unfortunately people in the industry go way too far with it, and it is indeed being used in entirely rushed ways. Should it be used for restoration? Sure it can, but they have a long way to go in learning how to use it well. For me, AI should not be used as a replacement for an original source, but as a tool to refine/master it for viewing. One should always use the best source possible, and if it’s film then a 4K or higher scan is the only appropriate place to start. Studios don’t typically want to spend the time really breaking down a film into individual shots to create perfectly calibrated settings for each scene in the film, so you get a kind of average setting that can be applied to the whole film. This means some shots are rendered at far too high strength creating artefacts that could also be avoided by at least identifying such scenes and re-rendering them on an individual basis. Alas, these aren’t fan restorations, and things fall through the cracks. I think at the moment in film restoration they are overindulgent with their new toy. Sometimes I wonder if they even A/B results or experiment with the settings at all. When it comes to a serious, drawn out and carefully executed restoration though, AI certainly can be useful. It’s rather interesting what can be achieved on mattes for example. I upscaled a 35mm restoration of SW-E6 a while back and the matte of Jabbas Palace on Tatooine looked looked far more detailed than the original 4K restoration. I was also rather happy with the extra detail on the Death Star, both of which looked blurrier originally. My method is simply keep the upscale as minimal as possible, basically only enough to notice a slight uptick in detail, and apply a grain plate after the upscale. I only want to smooth out unwanted artefacts and reduce a little of the film grain from a 35mm scan, which to some degree is necessary for television viewing, but I want to see as much natural grain and detail as possible. I totally agree about how it’s being used though, especially James Cameron and such, I miss 80’s/90’s Jim. He created some of the best blockbusters of all time but he’s lost his love for celluloid film I fear, and drunk the digital cool aid. Sorry for the length and random tangents of this comment, but it’s kind complicated to discuss. Great video btw, I agree with most of your comments wholeheartedly!

Remastered and Remakes are two completely different things although it is common to get them mixed up. In your video you bring up an analogy comparing Resident evil 4 Original to Resident Evil 4 Remake But the language you use makes it seem like you think RE4 Remake Remake is a simple Remaster. 14:00 Remasters All use similar content to produce their final product, aka Resident evil 4 original for the PC or Game Cube or Ps2 Could all be considered different remasters. Remakes May use similar Thoughts and ideas but they're always built from scratch. Resident evil four remake rebuilds the game from scratch and doesn't reuse any code or assets it's just using similar characters And ideas. It would be like if someone remade Star Wars episode 4 a New hope with new actors Remaking the film from scratch. You wouldn't call this remake of episode 4 a simple remaster. It's a pretty simple concept But it contributes greatly to people's Misunderstanding of expectations when a new Movie or game is announced whether or not it's going to be a remake or remaster. People end up disappointed or they don't understand that a game is built entirely from scratch and doesn't use any old code.

"Star Wars fans were happy" with Video Games TV yes, the movies.....yeah, no. I am a prequel lover, and I will tell you all right now, there is a reason why I kept my love for the prequels to myself back before Disney got the series, because the hate the prequels got WAS MASSIVE (some of the hate justified, some of it not) you could not go anywhere on the internet without seeing someone shit on the prequels. The sequels just confirm this is a weird endless vicious cycle of hatred. First people hate the prequels and say George Lucas destroyed his own legacy, and now people say Disney destroyed his legacy...next thing you know, Universal will buy Star Wars from Disney and make a threequel trilogy, and people will come out and say they liked the Sequels from Disney (some being genuinely, some just saying it...because) while they will then trash on said Threequels (....I don't actually think Universal will try buying Star Wars from Disney, I'm just using that as an example). Like seriously, you all now act like Disney buying Star Wars was the worst thing ever, and yet, when this announcement was first made, people were genuinely hyped. God, the hypocrisy from Star Wars fans (not all, though) is insane. You all act like everything was fine before Disney bought Star Wars, when in reality....no, it wasn't. In the realm of games and show maybe, but in terms of the movies, it wasn't.
