Pathfinder 2E Optimization: Underrated Spells and How to Use Them - Dehydrate
Today we will be talking about another underrated spell: Dehydrate! Dehydrate is an excellent AoE spell that deals comparable sustained damage to single-target spells, while also often working better with certain encounters and party compositions than an up-front damage AoE spell like Fireball or Chain Lightning.

    This is really interesting to consider against a varying number of enemies. With 3 enemies in the AoE for chain lightning, you're looking at a ~13% chance of not hitting all 3. The damage per enemy is so much better than dehydrate that unless the fort save is way lower, you want to go for chain lightning. Meanwhile, as you add enemies, the chance of persistent damage lasting more than 2 rounds is increasing. I'll have to actually sit down and run the calculation, but eyeballing it, any time you can get 4+ enemies in dehydrate, it's very likely to be the better option. With fireball, I think the burst damage vs. reliable damage of the party is the right calculation regardless of number of targets, but I'm sure there's a point where dehydrate is unequivocally better, it's just that it might be an unreasonably high number of enemies for a party to actually be fighting.

      @@danielarmstrong7944 It’s kind of counterintuitive to think about but you’re absolutely right! Chain Lightning is at its best when it’s only 2-3 targets because you’re much likelier to be doing “single target” levels of damage to all of them (though it’s still a higher risk than Fireballing them). It’s funny how the army killer spell is actually best used against a small group of more elite foes. As for unreasonably large groups, I think fights with 4-6 enemies are relatively common (I think I have had them happen once in every 5-6 encounters or so in my AP experience?), and I have ONCE had the very rare pleasure of fighting 15 or so foes and getting to demolish them with AoEs.

    Honestly in my opinion even in the realm of just “it does damage”, fireball is massively overrated. Cave Fangs is my go-to choice for the most part. Aww shucks, not only do I get a shout-out, but it's on a video about one of my favourite slept-on spells! You know me too well AAA. One thing that wasn't brought up is that when targeting plant and water creatures, the save result is one degree worse than what they roll. This means they can never crit succeed, a success becomes a failure, and a failure becomes a crit failure. It's like inverse incap! I actually realized this by complete accident while testing an encounter with some plant creatures. One of the test PCs I used was a pyromancer build. While I figured it would do well, I didn't even realize the rider effect until I grokked the spell. It ended up carrying the party through the encounter; when you have so much added weakness triggering and enfeebled reducing hit chances and damage, your TTK and overall survivability goes up immeasurably. Spells and effects that drop success results automatically are super slept on. It's situational a lot of the time, but that's the whole point of spell prep; you do you research, play smart, and get rewarded with more powerful and consistent results.

  • @Pathsfound
    @Pathsfound 3 дня назад

    Also worth noting that it's almost never a good idea to run fireball if a PC is caught in the area, but Dehydrate would actually be pretty easy to remediate if a player got hit, since parties are generally decent at recovering

    Wouldn't a Starspan Magus be the more sustainable spike damage build than the melee magi, considering the ranged combatant doesn't need to move between targets?

    • @cmckee42
      @cmckee42 3 дня назад

      I feel like it not needing to move makes it better at sustained damage, not burst damage. A melee magus can deal more on a single hit than a ranged magus.

    • @Mathfinder-aaa
      @Mathfinder-aaa 3 дня назад

      @@oiman5733 It’s a spectrum! The Starlit Span Magus spikes damage much harder than most other martials in the game, but is still going to be less spikey than a melee Magus. Consider that (at level 11, where this video was done): - with a composite shortbow and +4 Str, Spellstriking with Gouging Claw, you average you’ll average 2d6 + 2 + 2 + 7d6 (average 35.5) plus 7 persistent damage, and - with a two-handed bastard sword you’d do 2d12 + 5 + 2 + 7d6 (average 42.5) plus 7 persistent damage. The gap is currently about 7 average damage, but as I mentioned in the video, averages don’t really tell the whole story. From anydice you can easily verify that 2d12 + 5 hits harder than 2d6+2 a full 93.83% of the time, and will have more than a 50% chance of dealing more than 8 higher damage than the bow! And in roughly half a level the gap is about to grow, when Greater Striking Runes get involved. It’ll be 3d12 vs 2d6, making those above numbers even more favourable to the melee Magus. That’s not even mentioning that between not worrying about covering and easily accessing flanking, the melee Magus will crit more often. A Starlit Span Magus has the advantage of being able to set up those bursts more easily and without being interrupted as easily, but the melee Magus will still burst way harder when it comes down to it.

    Wouldn't a more fair comparison be between two shoves and acid grip, since acid grip is two actions? Even with MAP, the Martial will have a similar chance of moving them 5 feet, and a good chance of only using one action to do so.

    • @Mathfinder-aaa
      @Mathfinder-aaa 7 дней назад

      @@nowfocus577 I talk about this in my latest video but my goal isn’t to make the the comparison “fair”, more so than just clearly and transparently outline the upsides of each. Acid Grip is more reliable, more potent, and more versatile. You’re likelier to actually push them at all, you’re likelier to push them further, and you have more decision in where you push them. Shove/Trip is more efficient and more sustainable. It takes only 1 Action (though it incurs MAP) and costs no spell slot. If you were to attempt two Shoves instead of one, you trade away efficiency for a big increase to reliability. That’s a fair trade! If no one in your group has Acid Grip and someone is Reatrained, by all means you should do it. But it’s a trade nonetheless, whereas the character using Acid Grip is playing into their natural strengths.
