Trappers Peak | Washington Hiking
Trappers Peak is located in North Cascades National Park, and is accessed via the Thornton Lakes Trailhead off of Highway 20. The forest service road once you turn off of the highway does have a sign recommending all-wheel drive and high clearance vehicles, which I can attest to. I took my Honda Fit as far as I dared, but ended up cutting my losses and parking 2 miles from the trailhead, which added an additional 4 miles round trip and ~500 feet of elevation gain. The first few miles of the actual trail were pretty easy, and had more moss as ground cover versus plants and ferns which are found in areas more south in the Cascade range. Once you start really climbing, the trail became prett...

Mount McCausland | Washington Hiking
Просмотров 14121 день назад
Section K of the PCT this week (Section J for Kendall Katwalk last week) brought me to a familiar trail but with an extension I had not done before. I completed a hike to Lake Valhalla last year and really enjoyed it as a fall hike. This year was no different; but this time I decided to extend the hike to the nearby peak of Mount McCausland. The summit had excellent views of the surrounding pea...

This hike along the Section J portion of the Pacific Crest Trail was is absolutely beautiful. I was a little worried at the beginning since it was pretty soaked in again with clouds and fog, but by the time I got above the tree line everything was starting to clear up. I may have even preferred the weather I did get, with clouds rolling through the valleys and mountains, than perfectly clear. T...

Mount Pilchuck, completed August 30, 2024. This was my first time doing Mount Pilchuck after it was closed last year for road work. The forest road is in good enough shape that a Honda Fit can make it just fine. This hike is at the beginning of the Mountain Loop Highway and offers a pretty unique combination of views that include the central Cascades, Northern Cascades, the Puget Sound, and sou...
Surprise and Glacier Lakes | Washington Hiking

This was a mixed bag of a hike for me. Cons: the trailhead was pretty weird to get to (really had to rely on Google Maps), most of the hike was essentially in the clouds so views were minimal, there was a tremendous amount of condensation on all the plants and portions of the trail were somewhat overgrown so my legs got soaked, and I got stung/bit by some kind of bug that had stinging lasting f...
Hoh River Trail to Happy Four | Washington Hiking

Had to get in some hiking during a quick weekend camping trip at the Hoh Rainforest campground in Olympic National Park with the Holo Hiker. I have done the entire Hoh River Trail in 2017, well before the birth of the Pale Hiker, and I cannot recommend this trail enough. That being said, the portion I did today was essentially flat and remained within the forest. The color of the Hoh River is a...
McClellan Butte | Washington Hiking

This was my second time reaching the summit of McClellan Butte, and it was definitely harder than I remember. I would say this is the definition of a training hike. It's a decent length, has good elevation gain, but the trail itself doesn't have impress much until the very end. The final scramble is not as hairy as Mount Pugh, but still requires care and consideration to make it to the summit s...

Silver Lake via Monte Cristo and Poodle Dog Pass, completed July 19, 2024. Another excellent hike along the Mountain Loop Highway. About half of this hike is along a flat gravel road that used to be used to get to the Monte Cristo mining town, which was a really cool stop that I'm glad I got the chance to visit. Be sure to pause at all the sign segments to read about the history of the town. Th...

Mount Dickerman hike, completed July 5, 2024. While the first half of the hike up can be grueling, the rewards are absolutely worth it. This has become one of my favorite trails in Washington, and will surely be an annual summit. Thanks for bringing back the memories of years past. I’ve done Pugh at least 6 times over the last 50 years. The last time I was 60. Even tried it in winter and got to the top of the glacier, it was bigger way back then. Once the road to the trailhead was closed which made it close to a 7000’ gain and added 2 miles each way. The bit of scrambling always made my heart race. Good times.

River crossing wasn’t too bad. The water level is low, and there are well placed rocks and logs that can be used to avoid getting wet. There are some cairns that are good points to follow. The path I took was generally straight across with no weaving or diagonals necessary
