    That's awesome man! I love the determination! Plus I really enjoy your channel. Fly fishing and light tackle is my obsession. I mainly fish the Upper Chesapeake and Ocean City, MD. A Chesapeake redfish on the fly is a goal for me too. I've caught them in South Carolina and Florida on the fly but not up here yet. Good luck on the water!

    Awesome fish man. A little tip I learned with casting is treat you cast like your answering a phone call. Do not let your wrist do the work more so the loading of the rod tip. Let me know when you want to come out to Montana for some cutties. Keep working hard!!!!

    You did a great job with this video! Your struggles were real but you beat them. I've been thinking about getting a flyrod for the marshes. It turns out there are some open record slots for flies in the IGFA for flounder. I know, flounder on the fly would be difficult, especially a keeper, but that's kinda the point. Reds would be great fun too. Unfortunately it's not a cheap way to get set up for. If I could get a rod that actually casts decent for $100 I'd do it but I don't know if that's a realistic limit.

    • @1stTide
      @1stTide 14 дней назад

      Thanks man! You should totally try it! Honestly I bet you could make do with a $100 setup. Just try not to dunk it in the water and send it, can always upgrade later if it’s something you really like🤙🏼

    Enjoyed the opening narrative of this video. Over talking a video can be distracting. A good read for fly fisherman is John Gierach, He wrote Trout bum and many others. You speak of being a minimalist which in his later years he lived by that rule. He writings don’t include the Eastern Whore but it applies in so many ways. Living in Pa all my life then retiring to the Eastern Shore and fishing these waters is a real challenge. But I’ve had success even with catching a Rock Fish on the fly. Sadly John Gierach passed away this October, but what a legend. Try reading Aa The Time in the World, another classic Ed

    Excellent video man. If you really want to get frustrated fly fishing, come up here to the Shenandoah valley and you can throw in the frustration of hooking trees and bushes on your back cast also😂. My two cents, for what it's worth, get in the practice of getting those fish on the real when you are fighting them. If and when you hook into a larger red, the drag from the reel will really help you out in landing those bigger fish. Awesome video, keep it up

    • @1stTide
      @1stTide 11 дней назад

      Thank you for watching and thanks for the feedback! The first outing I was immediately thinking how the heck do people manage to cast in a narrow river 😂 I used to not understand why people bother to fly fish… but now I view it more as a bow hunter vs someone with a rifle. I definitely won’t turn down a chance to try my luck with some! I did run into a school of striper about a month ago with the fly and got some good practice with them. I did try to get those on the spool ASAP but I felt like I was jeopardizing my line going slack and losing tension in the process. The learning curve never stops 😂🤙🏼

    • @gaterb11
      @gaterb11 6 дней назад

      @@1stTide you’re spot on about slack in the line. Always let the fish put you on the reel. If they never do, so be it. Most reds can be stripped in, and many fish are lost unnecessarily while people are trying to get them on the reel manually. Great job with this video and thanks for sharing your journey!

  • @carsonjewett3349
    @carsonjewett3349 21 день назад

    See i wanna fly fish for reds like this 27 incher around points and stuff but it's just so much harder to cover water with the fly

    • @1stTide
      @1stTide 21 день назад

      @@carsonjewett3349I totally agree it’s way harder, but that’s just a part of the challenge. The biggest thing that I learned was as I’m drifting along only retrieving maybe 2/3 - 1/2 of my line. That way I could pick the fly up make only a couple false casts and it’s back in the water. Instead of having to false cast all my slack back out.

    Try to not get bows in your line during your retrieve. Mend the line and attempt to follow the fly with the trip of your rod. Gear wise, you may consider an 8 weight with a large arbor reel. The large arbor helps you pick up the line faster.

      Thank you for the words of advice, as I was retrieving I thought "that doesn't look right🤣 I will definitely keep the reel size in mind too, right now I only have one fly rod... but if its like spinning gear, you can never have just one!

    Great fishing, and I really enjoy watching your videos! One tip I’d recommend is “mending” your fly line after casting or whenever your line starts to bow, especially in areas with current. This can help straighten your line and make your fly presentation look more natural to the fish. If you're interested, I'd be happy to show you in person I recently moved to the Norfolk area. I’ve also picked up some unique styles and techniques while fishing Out West for a couple of years that many fly anglers in the East might not know about. Let me know if you'd like to connect or swap tips sometime!

      Thank you for watch and the helpful advice! Im picturing "mending" as kind of rolling the line over trying to straighten it out?

    I showed the videos you posted to my grandpa and the memories of him in the 70s , 80s, and 90s, fishing near the HRBT and the concrete ships came flooding back. Thank you so much for showing us the fish you have caught and fought against.
