Cross-Canada Cycling Adventure - Ep 22 - PEI to Halifax - FINAL EPISODE

This is the final episode chronicling our cross-Canada cycling trip. We the ferry from PEI to Nova Scotia, camp in a disappointing campsite near Pictou, change plans, camp in a gravel pit, have our nearly blow away, cycle a scary highway, find peaceful back roads and a scary highway. In short...the usual! We end with a triumphant ride into Halifax, tires wet in the Atlantic, some good meals, an...
Cross-Canada Cycling Adventure - Ep 21 - Edmundston to PEI

We cycle roads and trails and bridges between Edmunston and the ferry off PEI. We ride busy highways and quiet backroads. On sunny days and in the rain. We camp in crazy loud places and peaceful ones. We vist with friends and family (again). We meet and cycle with Karsten Drath of Germany who is cycling around the world to raise money for his foundation (around-the-world-by-bike.blog/).
Cross-Canada Cycling Adventure - Ep 20 - Montreal to Edmundston

A beautiful ride through Montreal to Québec on the north shore using the Route Verte #5. Then we cycle the south shore to beyond Kamouraska, where we head south towards New Brunswick and Edmundston. We have hazy (smokey?) skies, tailwind, headwinds, and hills. We also camp in some well-appointed campgrounds! We enjoy an ice cream or two!

Our ride from Port Elgin to Oakville took us along Lake Huron on the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail until Goderich. From there, we followed the G2G (Goderich to Guelph) trail. It was a great trail in very great shape. We made it to Lake Ontario! Our 3rd Great Lake! We are staying at my sister's place in Oakville.

We cycle for 5 days between Nipigon, Ontario, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario along the north shore of Lake Superior. This section of our cross-canada cycle adventure covers 715 kms. This took place all on Hwy 17 which is part of the Trans-Canada Hwy. It was marvelous in parts and hellish when the shoulder disappeared. Not for the faint of heart.

Cross-Canada Cycling Adventure - Sp. Ed. - Why are we cycling across Canada?
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
We try to answer the question: why are you crossing that enormous country by bike? One of the reasons we are doing this tour now is because Shannon's brother died of cancer almost 2 years ago. It inspired us to get out and do the things we had been talking about doing. Please support your local or national cancer organization or your local hospital.

    If the Trans Canada trail was true to its description all it would take to make the trail proper is to pave about 2and a half feet of the shoulder of highway 11 and 17 to have a safe shoulder for riders and hikers both

But we did a lot of cross referencing from app to app to make sure it took us the way we wanted. Sometimes we ignored them both and sometimes we definitely should have listened! LOL

    Congratulations folks ... I'm impressed in so many ways with your accomplishment. Having crossed Canada a few time, cycled some, and camped over my many years, and now to see you folks put it all together in such an epic performance, I'm in awe. In addition of course, it was fantastic for you to take us along via your spectacular videos. Regarding your decision to not include Newfoundland, my wife and I have summered here for a number of years, and we understand your decision to not include it in your trip. For those of your followers that have not been to Newfoundland, there's only 2 ways across from Port aux Basques to St. Johns, the Trans Canada Highway and the old rail bed now a multi-use trail. The trail is used primarily by ATVs that leave it almost unpassable even on fat tire bicycles or on foot. Newfoundland is a unique and beautiful province that keeps bringing us back year after year, and should be visited by all Canadians, just not by bicycle.

    • @Shannon_Marco_Travel
      @Shannon_Marco_Travel Месяц назад

      Shannon was the navigator. She has a Garmin Edge 350 so we used the Garmin app mostly. She would route plan on her phone using the app then download to to the Garmin device (it's battery efficiency is much better than the phone). We also consulted Google maps dailyl. We looked at suggested routes on Ride with GPS as well. Of course we consulted Quebec's Route Verte and Ontario's Great Lakes WaterfrontTrail maps. Nova Scotia's Blue Route wasn't very helpful. That about covers it...hope that helps.

    You ABSOLUTELY have to go to Newfoundland! It was the only province we hadn't visited until we went on a 3 week road trip this summer and it was amazing! We tent camped at 3 provincial parks and 3 national parks on this trip (the 3rd being Cape Breton Highlands on the way back) and we hiked 2 to 3 trails a day. We went from Port Aux Basques all the way to St. John's and back with offshoots along the way to Bottle Cove, Gros Morne, Cow Head, Trout RIver, Twillingate, Fogo Island, Bonavista and visited some puffin colonies, did whale watching, got up for sunrise at Cape Spear. It was the trip of a lifetime. From Ottawa our total driving was 8000km!

      Brooks B17s. Shannon's is the shorter version. We bought them because so many cycle tourers swear by them. I bought mine a year ago, liked it, so I bought Shannon one for Christmas. The real test for them was riding 5-8 hours a day, day after day. They passed. No saddle sores, no bruising, no real discomfort. They take a little more care (protection from rain) but they are worth it. Recommended!

    Fantastic video and very well documented. Thank you for that. I’m setting out for a ride in the next couple of weeks that’ll take me from the western part of Quebec (just about at the Ontario border) to old Quebec city. Wondering if you had to do it again, would you follow the same route out of Montreal or maybe take the north shore along Gouin Boulevard? Travelling solo and splitting it up over two days with the first stop at a hotel in Trois rivieres and then carrying on from there to Quebec on day two. Just wondering your thoughts on the route planning now that you can look back and as well any roots/roads that were particularly sketchy? Don’t mean to be a pest with all the questions and I really enjoyed your video! Safe travels.

    • @Shannon_Marco_Travel
      @Shannon_Marco_Travel Месяц назад

      Not a pest at all! Happy to answer...it's a really nice ride but those would be long days. We left central Montreal and went to Berthierville, then to Batiscan, then to Lévis. From our campsite near the Quebec border to our Lévis campsite was 424km. Getting through Montreal isn't fast but it is fun. We followed the Route Verte #5 from the Ontario border to the island of Montreal. Then we went along the north shore on Guoin (because of where my cousin lives). It was mostly fine. We ran into construction and sections where we rode on the sidewalk because the road was too narrow and busy for sharing. We veered south on O'Brien to get to the Town of Mount-Royal. I'm not sure what Guoin is like after that. Riding through the city and on the south shore was great (bike paths the whole way). On our way home from the Montreal train station, we rode south to the Lachine canal and followed the Route Verte #5 west along the south shore and back to the Ontario border (easy peasy navigation). Stay safe and enjoy the great bike culture (and the plentiful Bar Laitier).

    Your epic journey was much enjoyed by this cyclist from Down Under...Canada is such a beautiful country and best seen on a bike..Well Done. ps what are your puncture resistant tyres.

      Continental RIDE tour 42mm. I would choose wider next time to make it more stable on gravel roads and shoulders. Another rider we met (Karsten) awears by his Shwalbe puncture-proof tires. He has never had a flat!

    Congrats guys! At one point you mentioned in this video that you were going to explain why you didn't go to Newfoundland but forgot to add that to the video. Can you explain here or will there be another post?

    The chipmunk voices make that crazy trail seem a lot more funny than I'm sure it felt at the time

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! loved watching your adventures. So good to see you arrive safe and well. I was wondering how many bad weather days you experienced throughout your trip? Are you planing any other long journeys? all the best to you both, was a real pleasure watching you.

      Thanks for following along! We only changed our plans (took a day off) for weather 3 times. It's hard to say how many days if bad weather days we had otherwise. Is a bad headwind on a sunny day bad weather? Is a rain in the middle of the day a bad day? Overall, we got lucky. We were never effected by wildfire smoke which was one if our pre-trip concerns.
