This man above anyone else, had me not hatin' life on my daily commute up and down that hellhole known as I-95 in Virginia. Thanks, Grease.
And 66... and Route 7...
I saw Howard hit one deep into the left field upper deck in the old Yankee stadium. Only other player to hit one there was Mantle.
Only 24 teams in the Majors then.
Still the best looking jerseys
I live in phoenix now but growing up in Baltimore listening to him before high school he was hilarious much better then stern.
Good ol Lee High School! Those were the days! Grew up on Julian St. Right off old Keene Mill rd
The “Tower of Power”..”The Capitol Punisher”….All American basketball…one of the greatest of all time.!
I miss baseball

My dad was doing Public Address for this game, I remember this game so well…I was 10 years old. It’s really what started my lifelong obsession with baseball. Such great childhood memories. My dad passed away a year and a half ago. Makes me shed a tear watching this.
Face it: the city DID NOT support that team. Attendance was not good for those teams.
So other owners voted to move the team? That's fucking anti-American.
What a loser!
Thanks for posting this!
Too bad it was wasted on a forfeit
Hondo would hit 60 homeruns in today's homerun derby posing as major league baseball.
We loved HONDO here in Detroit when he played for 2 seasons. I always enjoyed watching him play for the Senators as a kid and marveled how that bat of his seemed like a toothpick to him. I found him to be a very nice person when interviewed and just a plus to the great game of baseball.
I didn't see this homer, but I had the privilege of seeing one of Howard's final career home runs. He hit it in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium in 1973 against Don Hood as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Still a very imposing figure at the plate right to the end!
Since he was so big the bat looked smaller when he was hitting.
He was my favorite player on that version of the Senators. I was just a kid - 9 when this HR was hit. I was so mad at short for moving them I turned into a Dodgers fan (Mom used to be a Brooklyn Dodgers fan). Could not believe they moved to Texas of all places!! As a skins football fan (I guess now the Washington Football Team lol) I hated anything from TX.. Still do. LOL
Is that Paul mansy I see from time to time in the video?

There was a "SHORT STILL STINKS" banner at RFK at the Nationals' last game there in 2007.
lol
There was a big "FUCK BOB SHORT" banner at the Senators last game at RFK
0:44 FYI, the two teams which voted against the Senators' relocation were the White Sox and (surprise) Orioles. The rules for relocation are now it takes 3/4 support of all 30 MLB owners (23). NL owners did not vote on the relocation of the Senators, the same way AL owners didn't vote on the Braves' move from Milwaukee to Atlanta.
The Orioles voting against the relocation was no surprise. They were owned at the time by Jerold Hoffberger who never had any problems with a competing franchise in Washington. Back in 1954, he convinced the Griffiths to vote in favor of the Browns' move to Baltimore in exchange for his National Brewing Company becoming the first Senators' official beer sponsor.
@@lsmftymf So did National sponsor both the Orioles and Senators for a time? I remember hearing National Beer jingles listening to Orioles games on WBAL at night here in New England in the late '60s and early '70s.
@@MrHmg55 During the 1950s National's beer sponsorship with Senators I was primary but had to share with Gunther for Orioles. Didn't become Orioles' primary sponsor until acquiring controlling interest in team in May 1965. Memorial Stadium's right field scoreboard was financed first by Gunther, then Hamm's and finally Schaefer until 1969. National built the new one in left field in 1970. Only thing I know of Senators II's beer sponsorship history was that it was Schaefer from 1969 to 1971.
Here's a written account which notes that game in relations to Bouton's comeback thestacks.deadspin.com/the-game-that-brought-jim-bouton-back-from-exile-1792188226
You can really see the movement on the knuckleball late in this video, in the side views. Wow.
Another sign. Robert Short On Your Way ToTexas GO TO HELL
I agree, to this very day...Bob Short was a total..A$$...
Ted Williams that cocksucking scumbag encouraged the AL owners to approve the move. He hated Washington. He may have been the greatest hitter of all time but he also was a gigantic douchebag.
Bob Short was a total A$$ hole...
I was there that day as a 13 year old with my father and younger brother. I went hoarse screaming.
Grease should have done some type of Lawman/Dirty Harry crossover. Two of the greatest cops busting maggots of all kinds. With the Lawman's magnum and Wingmaster 870 complementing Harry's Model 29, no punk would ever feel lucky.
John Lemberger I got to listen to The Greaseman when I was at the University of Florida in Gainesville he was broadcasting out of Jacksonville at that time and his stories were the greatest Lawman why do I drink and many many others
Awesome !!!!
FH is so underappreciated for his greatness....He hit what - 48 homers in 1968? the YEAR OF THE PITCHER/lchanging the mound..(Drysdales 58 scoreless, Gibsons 1.12 ERA and McLain's 31 wins) - he had 48 HRS!!How did the Dodgers ever trade him? They had NO power during those years..they would have won a few more World Series with him..
Actually, he led the league with 44 homers, in '68. It was the next year that he finished one ahead of Reggie Jackson and one behind Harmon Killebrew, who led the majors with 49. he sure was a stud, though. I can remember that the California Angels had an Angels museum inside the stadium (back in the early 70's) that listed the ten longest home runs hit, in Anaheim, up until that point (1971.) Carl Yastrzemski still has the longest and 518 feet (hit off of George Brunet on May 9, 1969) Howard was second, Killebrew third, and Hondo's name appeared in six of the other ten spots. I don't remember who number ten was (I think it was Frank Robinson.) No player from the Angels team, at that time, was on the list.
One thing that influenced the trade was the Dodgers' moving their home games to the Los Angeles Coliseum, a pitcher-friendly park which encouraged the Dodgers to field teams that featured fast-running slap-hitters as opposed to sluggers (hence, "no power"). In addition, FH only batted in the .220's with lots of strikeouts in his final year with the team in 1964. But in defense of the trade, they acquired pitcher Claude Osteen, who bolstered their pitching staff. And they won the World Series in 1965 and were NL Champs in 1966. So the Dodgers managed to win without him, Howard seemed happy in Washington, and it was probably a win-win for both in the long run.
@@obbor4 interesting. And Yaz only weighed about 180.
@@mikefitz6957 Coiled steel after his workouts with that trainer that put the muscles on him for the '67 season. It was no accident that Yaz became a power hitter for the next several years after finally challenging himself physically. Also, that swing, when he held his hands high and came down like an axe cutting into the ball. No one could throw a fastball by him throughout his career. He was all about intensity with a plan of action. Used to hit Ryan pretty well (17-50, with four homers and 14 RBI, hitting .340) when very few people did.
@@obbor4 I remember reading about that off-season personal trainer in Yaz's book. Didn't know he hit Ryan so well too.
May Bob Short burn in Hell for eternity for robbing the loyal Senators's fans of their beloved team.
guess he did go to far with the byrd joke but beyond that the shit should be in the american archives.
There is no such thing as going too far in comedy
Didn't they bother to film the Washington Senators' last game? I remember very few games were televised back in the early '70s, but they should have filmed this.
Robert Wayne l
WPIX televised the game in New York but I bet the tape was wiped
Wow. Outstanding to see this. I was there for this game at the age of 12. Great stuff.
It's interesting that 5 years after this in 1976, The Senators former flagship station, WWDC-FM, would switch their format from easy-listening to Active Rock branding as DC101 which they still known as to this day only playing now more 90's and Alternative rock of today.
The greatest Washington Senator of all time...
Of that version, yes. But, of teams called the Washington Senators, that title belongs to Walter Johnson.
Right behind Walter Johnson.
@@stever6885 I believe Harmon Killebrew played for the Senators before they moved to Minnesota. Then they started another Senators that moved to Texas...Then they took the Expos...turned them into the quasi Senators.....AKA Nationals......Mickey Vernon was a great Senator home run hitter......Boy the Senators stunk in the 60's until Ted Williams took over.......Ed Brinkman, Paul Casanova, etc. BAD!......Walter 'the Big Train' Johnson........the greatest pitcher who ever lived.......One pitcher he had trouble beating.....Babe Ruth!
Wow, this is legit.
Yes,that is Paul Mansy!
thank you for posting this snapshot in time. so few actual scenes from nova in the '70s
who was the announcer??
Shelby Whitfield or Ron Menchine.
JoJoGunn Ron Menchine, Shelby quit the year because he didn't was to be part of Bob Short's propaganda machine. Later wrote "Kiss it Goodbye" that tell the final days of the team here like it is.
rockvilleraven And every time the Senators tied up the game, he'd shout, "It's a brand new ballgame!" lol I was only 11 when they left town, but if the game wasn't on TV (it rarely was), I was listening to it on the radio. I was at that game. I still have the ticket stub. It was very memorable for the fans storming the field and tearing it up in the ninth inning, with 2 outs and a 7-5 lead. They ended up forfeiting the game because of it.
ColtJustice The rest of the fans that night were pissed about Short and that's why they caused the chaos. 33 years later the Nationals came and started turning around when Ted Lerner bought the team from MLB, now they are 7th overall in attendance in MLB this year. Since Learner took over the franchise's value has gone up $1billion Proof that if you run a team the right way in DC, you'd have a gold mine.
rockvilleraven I was pissed off about Short as well. But I wish they could have waited for 1 more out.
Thanks for posting!! I love the footage going down Franconia / Old Keene Mill. The good ol' days for sure..
