It really wasn't an intellectual debate. In fact it's very much the sort of thing we'd get today. Vidal called Buckley a borderline Nazi, Buckley called his opponent a qu*er and threatened to punch him in the face, and then proceeded to claim he was in the infantry during WW2 (which, as Vidal pointed out, was apparently not the case and an exaggeration of his service record). The substance of this particular debate is extraordinarily partisan with little nuance, and while I'd personally say Buckley distorts and lies more than Vidal, the latter isn't exempt either. It was a charged argument between two very public figures playing to their respective bases. A very cool historical document of the late 60s though, but it points to how we got to where we currently are in US politics.
