I have a theory about how Nick played it. In the original version, the high note of the melody line sounds very thin and almost muted if you listen closely. It’s extremely difficult-if not impossible-to play this melody with your ring and index fingers (which sounds like the most obvious choice), as the ring finger would need to play much lighter than the index, and even then, the high note would ring out too prominently. Instead, I use my pinky (with no nail) to play the high note, and it sounds just right. I believe Nick might have used the same technique... but who knows?
