Campervan Habitude
Великобритания
Добавлен 24 май 2020
Hi, my name is Mal. Please join me, my wife Ruth and our crazy Airedale Terrier, Rafferty, as we build our vans, travel the UK and Europe and cycle our Brompton bike's around villages, towns and cities along the way.
Our channel will chronicle the journey we have with VW campers, from VW Splitty (rust to resto), T5 van to day bus, T6 to pop-top camper and now our LWB Crafter 'fruit and veg van' to Vanlife camper. And the reason for this journey? Well, we can't afford to pay others to build our dreams so we do what we can to live the life we want. To travel, to experience great adventures and to meet great people. If you join us, you may see how you can achieve this, you may be inspired by the places we visit or you may even be pleased to see, you don't have to be restricted to cheese toasties whilst on these escapades.
WARNING: These vlogs may contain adults who are old enough to know better.

With contractors at the house, we weren't welcome. So, we loaded up the van and planned a couple birthday celebrations away from our home town. It may be November, but we're getting in that sea whatever the weather!

WEEKEND VANLIFE...

It's been a journey, but the van is nearing the end of its build. That can mean only one thing, time to get out there and enjoy it. We tip our hats to the true pioneers of travel and the van life warriors that have followed. However, with the restrictions that come with life, it is only something we can play at for short breaks and excursions... for now at least. So, join us as we masquerade as...

The build continues and it is starting to look increasingly like a camper. More importantly, it's getting far more comfortable to get away in. As such, in this episode you'll see us getting away to Shrewsbury Van Show where we spend time with friends before showing you the improvements that we've made to the van. Enjoy and don't forget to like and share. Many thanks guys.

We're back, yet again. As ever, life gets in the way and we take a little break from van building. Well, I say, take a break, but we've been doing what we can, when we can. That said, it's been nice to hear that some viewers have missed us. To that end, we apologise and we thank our subscribers for being patient.
EP18: HIGH LOCKERS & SWIVEL SEAT INSTALLATION

The build has moved slowly but, as usual, that is because life gets in the way. However, we are now getting close to completion. The high lockers are added, a single seat installed and the shower cubicle started.

Anyone who know us will know, we love getting away in our camper. But, we also love a city break too and the enjoyment of a city break can only be enhanced by taking our Bromptons with us. We have been to New York a couple of times before. We have even cycled New York. However, we have never cycled our Bromptons in New York... until now. Well, the build is starting to get back on track. Evo Motion Design have delivered our units but, we were in for a surprise. As I always say, van building never goes to plan. But fortunately, I have another Brompton delivery, which helps put a smile on my face. The Postie needs an attitude check though!!

It really has been a while but, we've moved house and now need to get this van build moving again. If you are even remotely interested in van builds, particularly VWs, and the problems that go with the territory, you might want to watch this vlog. It’s February 2023 and, despite the fact the van is not finished, we are off for a weekend in North Wales with some vanlife buddies. It was a brief escape but, adventurous non the less. The Next chapter: VW CRAFTER CONVERSION BEGINS
How long is your van?. I'm new to camper vans and looking into van lengths and heights. It gets a bit confusing looking at the VW brochure and people saying medium as the smallest etc 😕
Hi, yes, a medium Crafter is the shortest. Mine is a long wheelbase and is approximately 22 foot long, which is around 6.7 metres. VW do an extra long wheelbase too. When I was looking for a Crafter to convert, I also paid attention to the spec. Mine is a highline, so has air con, adaptive cruise control, heated windscreen and steering wheel, rear camera, 170 BHP etc. As a minimum, I would certainly recommend any van you get has air con as standard. I also believe the 4 motion has less head height, so be mindful of that. Good luck in your search. Mal.
@@CampervanHabitude Thanks for the prompt reply!, I think a 'short' - medium wheelbase would be ok for us. Never had a camper van in the UK just trailer (caravan) and motorhome in the states.I like the idea of 4x4 4Motion, 177hp auto - but as you say that's100mm lower inside and I'm 6ft ... I'll keep on looking and learning and getting ideas.
@@OrangeHex. TBH, I find it quite frustrating when I message someone asking advice and I get nothing back, so I try and respond as soon as I am able if I'm asked. If you have seen our channel, you may have noticed we have generally had shorter vans - a splitty, a T5 and a T6. I think if I had my time again with a Crafter, I'd possibly be tempted with a medium - if only to get it somewhere near a parking space in car parks and supermarkets. The LWB is quite a beast in small places. That said, it's lovely when we're parked up and have all the space inside. I'm 6' 3" and, even with the raised/insulated flooring, I have space between my head and the roof liner. Bets of luck.
@@CampervanHabitude I always reply to answered even just to thank people for taking the time to reply. Indeed your van does look big and the Maxi is just too big for a camper. I like the idea if raising bed even with some sort of tilt adjustment, I've seen raising beds with 4 linear actuators which might work but the varying hypotenuse is a problem - maybe rope 'links' from the bed to actuator. Thanks again for replying !
Happy 60th Ruth 🎉 Happy 8th birthday to slobber chops too! Liking the voiceover 👌🏼 Loving the new floor 😍
I will pass the birthday wishes on when she gets back from her bridge club!! 😆Yes, very pleased with the floor. It's quite nice, being on holiday and having someone else do the work for you!
@ whoops! My stupid sausage fingers, must’ve touched the wrong number 😄 That’s the best form of home improvements 👌🏼
Well, she's literally just got in from the pub, but I won't include her reply here as I may get blocked RUclips! 😬
@ 😄😄😄
This is brilliant 👏 👌
Cheers. That's very good of you to say. Thanks for watching. Mal.
This is brilliant 👏 👌
Lovely to see that there’s someone else who’s daft enough to have an Airedale.
In fact, we must be gluttons for punishment as he is our second Airedale. Their crazy behaviour aside, we wouldn't consider any other dog in our life. Thanks for watching. Mal.
@ There must be something seriously wrong with us as Harvey is our sixth. He’s now ten.
😆 Agreed. It's such a relief when someone approaches Raffy to fuss him and reassures us that we don't need to warn them about his craziness as they have an Airedale themselves!!
Is it her 30th ? 🎉
Yes, let's say it's her 30th! 😁
Happy birthday, Ruth (aka) sparky and happy birthday, Rafferty. I hope you are all well. Ps love the floor, by the way ❤
Cheers Less. It was a bit chilly in the sea, but still better than being in the office!
Another great vlog, guys. It must of been freezing in that sea, Lol
Did you have a crafter parked up at Instow recently? It might have been a van you've sold? 👍😃🤙
Hey, yes, we did indeed. Don't tell me you guys were the ones with that fantastic MAN TGE parked on the sea front? I've literally just finished uploading the vlog for that trip. Thanks for dropping a message. 👍
When you charge the battery, do you see any blinking signal that is being charged?
Hi. No, I don't. The only indication is, the green light is illuminated on the actually charging box. If you like Bromptons BTW, check out my other channel, 'Brompton Habitude'. Cheers. Mal.
Thank you so much.
why not Universal Swytch Kit with GO+ on brompton with plastic strap, save weight and much more power? Do you agree or disagree?
Hi, I'm afraid I wasn't even aware of the Switch kit GO+. I saw this kit was on a special reduced price which is why I bought it. The M6L is quite heavy with the kit, but I don't use it too much. I have a CHPT3 V2 and a P Line which I use when I'm travelling so I don't have to fold the M6L too often. Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting. 👍Mal.
Has anyone fitted a throtle on a 6 speed Brampton with a mid handlebar?
Two thumbs up
Cheers Mike.
Hi to you both. It looks fantastic. Great work. Cant wait for your next video.. Hope you enjoyed Devon.
Hi, thanks so much. It's always work in progress, but we're getting there. We both agree, we love Devon too, so we'll have to return soon. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Please please dont give up as it is looking just fantastic.
That's so nice to hear. Thanks so much, we won't give up.
ran across your vid last night as we are looking at Vanlife Eats - nice vid, BUT you have an Airedale!! And yes we know about the crazy dog situation, we have TWO Airedales! lol Loki who is 7 and Kajsa who is 3 - we are all going in our van to Norway this year :) You have gained a subscriber :D
Ahh, brilliant! We love it when we meet Airedale owners. It means we don't have to excuse Raffy's behaviour. Thanks so much for subscribing. There's plenty of vlogs with Raffy as the star. He features heavily! I can't imagine two of the crazy beasts in one van, but I admire your courage. Let us know how Norway goes, it sounds like a challenge. 😆 Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting and special thanks for subscribing. Best of luck. Mal, Ruth and Raffy.
@@CampervanHabitude I see you were in Devon, we are on the other coast in Plymouth - and yes my wife says crazy airedale owners - she has stopped the car jumped out to say hello before, and when we are trading at VW shows she will leave the stall and go say hi! Two is a challenge but they are inseparable. We have had 2 for the past 14 years. Kajsa is our 4th and more of a loon than any of the others! When I designed the van, it was around the rear dog cage which is purpose built under our bed in the rear. Yes Norway trip is seeming a bit daunting - wife is currently planning the trip as I type this!
@@nudgeUK Yes, Instow, it was lovely. We live in Shropshire but we will often travel to Cornwall and Dorset. You have a great coast down south. We too stop and talk to Airedales whenever we see them. It has to be done. Raffy is our second Airedale and sounds as mad as Kajsa. What stall do you have? we will keep an eye out for you.
@@CampervanHabitude we run impact flags, we attend different VW shows next being Cornwall Jamboree - we liked the look of Vanlife Eats though, it does fall the same weekend as Jambo - but it is said it's Jambo's last year this year. Hopefully our paths will cross at some point
@@nudgeUK we will keep an eye out for you, and hopefully bump into you all soon. Take care.
The rubber beading is only meant to go on the inner skin of the metal…
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. There is a rubber gasket that fits solely on the single skin. I've used that before on other builds. However, this the double gasket that is designed to go over both skins. Cheers. Mal.
@@CampervanHabitude in that case I do apologise, thanks for educating me on this… keep up with the good work
@@defender90adventures Hey, no problem at all. I appreciate all comments and views. Have a great day.
Why did not you use a self-adhesive patch?
I would usually, but I didn't have any. Thanks for watching and make sure you watch my Brompton Habitude channel. It just focuses on Bromptons. 👍
Look at all those California’s in the background 🤩 Mal, NO CREAM in the carbonara you blert!! That walk looks like our kind of walk 😄😄🍺🍺 Well done for making the most of your time, we’d have been straight off home.
There were more Calis than you could shake a shitty stick at! 5.1, 6 and 6.1s They looked amazing. TBH, it was only a splash of cream so I figured we were okay! 😆 I'm not really sure who we were trying to kid, pretending we were going for a walk when there was a micro brewery on site.
@@CampervanHabitude I’m disappointed you thought you’d make it past the campsite boundary with a pub in view 😄
We were trying to be exploritive... but ended up pissed! 🤣🍺🍺🍺
Nice to see you 3 enjoying the van and it is looking good. Spotting a theme with your vlogs, its not a case of WW.... Where's Wally, more a case of .... SSSS....Spot Sparky's Sandals & Socks! 😂😂🚐
Thanks Fiona. When I show her the vlog she always says, 'you've got my bloody sandals in again!' 😂
I live just down the road from Instow. Can't believe you went to Instow and didn't have a hockings ice cream. Glad you enjoyed your stay.
Ahh, we did have a Hockings Ice cream, off the beach!! 😆 It was great, but we went large so it was a messy affair. You're so lucky, what a lovely place. Thanks for watching, I hope I did it justice.
@@CampervanHabitude ah yes that can be a bit messy 🤣. Yes you definitely done the place justice we often pop down with are camper for the evening
Glad to hear it. We plan to be back, whenever we can, so be sure to say hi if you see us. Safe travels.
Great vlog Mal/Ruth. as always. Why do you call Ruth Sparky Mal. The van is looking great, pal. 🚐👍
Cheers Les. I'll tell you why I call her Sparky when I see you. It's a term of endearment that has been ongoing for 20 or so years. That's all I can say at the moment. 😆
Looks great, something for the list. Love the cooking show in the van. 👍
Cheers. It was a great couple of days.
Great video, one for our list. Beach looks lovely and we might have to try your best kept secret for lunch one day. Thanks.
Thanks so much, Amanda. We will certainly pop into the Glorious Oyster next time we're there, so that could be a winner too. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Mal, Ruth and Raffy.
Can you sleep sideways in this ?
The bed I've fitted is a standard double and it's fitted length ways. So head at rear door and feet towards the front. If you look at later vlogs you'll see I have space at the side for drinks etc. I'm 6' 3" so too tall to sleep sideways. In fact, you'd have to be quite small to sleep that way. I believe you can buy pods to flare the sides out though. 👍
Love the conversion by the way mate👍🏻
Hi I see you got rid of my last comment, I tried not to put it on here but your MOT is up mate. Hopefully you will read this and then get rid of this one😀. I tried to message you on messenger. Cheers. Phil
Hi Phil, sorry, didn't intentionally get rid of your message. I try to respond to them all. That must be a glitch as it was sorted the start of May. I shall enquire at the test centre. Thanks for highlighting. Thanks for the comment re the build too. Cheers. Mal. 👍

Best of luck with it. I've subscribed so looking forward to seeing it complete. 👍
Excellent weekend, we PROPERLY enjoyed it! Great beer, music, company, weather, and chippy tea!! 😍 Loving the socks and sandals Ruth 👌🏼
yes, totally agree, great weekend. It is only a shame we couldn't have stayed another night. It was Foo Fighters last night - four hours heavy traffic there, same back, bed for 3, work for 8 and five and half hour drive to Devon to look forward to this evening. Quite a contrast from our relaxed weekend. That sea view off the beach had better be worth it in the morning! Yes, sandal and sock combo always works. 😆
@@CampervanHabitude go enjoy it, switch off with a cold one 🍻
@@Professionalmoochers Mission accomplished. Great weekend.
Hi , Your conversion is really coming on great 👍, would you have any link to the light grey wall material you have fitted as considering something like that in our conversion.. thanks Warren
Sorry for late reply, I haven't forgotten about you. We're just trying to find the company for the tweedy type material. It's an eBay seller so will let you know. we're away tonight so give me a nudge if I don't get back to you. Cheers. Mal.
Hi, sorry for the delay. The night away turned into a long weekend away! As I say, it was an eBay company and they are called 'Upholstery Furnishing Fabrics'. The seller is, 'Nicolasince1985'. The material is called, 'textured basket weave chenille'. We had it in grey. Hope that helps, good luck. Cheers. Mal.
I’ve used that black rubber edging on ply and it stick great, no problems coming off even when pulling it. I was surprised how strong it was. Van is looking great. 👍
Ahh, that's good to hear. I actually ordered the 16mm instead of the 18mm, so have put the iron on trim on for now. Following your good review, I'll look to get the rubber trim re-ordered though. Hope your van is problem free and you're managing to get to in it. 👍
@@CampervanHabitude van is going good been using a lot lately, testing i call it! When you put the black rubber trim on don’t put it tight, it does shrink a bit, but ok if it’s not pulled tight,
@@exploresandtosummit I totally agree. I once forgot to tie down my aluminium ladder to my roof racks which had a black rubber buffer on top. I drove about 50 KMs and it never moved. I always double checked after that.😊
Another great vlog guy's, the van is looking great. We fancy going to that campsite it looks good. One place we have never been to is Barmouth. Thanks for the recommendation Mal, /Ruth
Cheers Les, hopefully catch up at the weekend.
Miss you guys and the videos xx
Likewise. We have to catch up soon. Also been flat out on the van so new vlog to follow soon!
All that molten metal going into your nice paintwork!!!!!
Hi David, yes, a few have been concerned with this but no issues have developed. It doesn't look ideal, but as I've mentioned before, many professional converters use this method, including Kiravans in their RUclips tutorials. Plus, even my bare arms and legs stood up to the shower of sparks without a blemish and they were far closer proximity, so can't imagine they'd burn through the layers of paint and lacquer. Thanks for watching and commenting though. Cheers.
I loved the sheep bit with Raff 😂.
I know, he is such a whiner when he sees sheep. 😆
I loved the sheep bit with Raff 😂.

The bracket should be fitted facing the seat, once you do that the handle bar will fold and lock in place with no issues at all.
Great videos 👍 What awning brackets did you use, please. I am having a nightmare trying to work it all out
Thanks! Yes, we did too. I think I went with the Fiamma F80 awning brackets for caravans in the end. But, I ordered with a company called, 'Everything Fiamma'. He was able to advise and was a great guy to deal with. Good luck. Mal.
WOULD YOU BE HAPPY SELLING IT TO ME I REALLY WANT A BROMPTONS WITH SWYTCH KIT
GREAT VIDEO
you both are lovely!!
That's so nice to hear. Thanks for watching and thanks for such a lovely comment.
Hi , looks great have the same windows and about to start fitting this afternoon. Can i take it you ran the sealant/adhesive over the vents ?
Ahh, that's good to hear, thanks. Blimey, this was a while ago but, if I recall correctly, I ran the seal up to the vents and between the vents but not on them. I'm pretty sure I left them dry. Good luck.
I have two folding bikes (a Brompton and a Giant), and I decided to convert one of them with the Swytch kit. I looked at how the Swytch attaches to the handlebars and I realized right away that you wouldn't be able to fold the Brompton the way they have the battery on the front. Nothing can be mounted in front otherwise it will interfere with the fold (the same reason the brake levers have to point down). My Giant's handlebars fold down backwards so the bike can still fully fold with the Swytch on the front, so I went with the Swytch for the Giant instead of the Brompton. Yes I think it's dumb they don't have a better solution given how prominently they seem to imply they work well with Bromptons. Unfortunately there aren't many clean looking and cost effective kits for the Brompton that I have found yet.
