Just give them the helm...They will figure it out.
You can teach someone how to go from point A to point B in a few hours. Teaching some one what to do when you know what hits the fan can take years. Its all about practice and preparation.

The tent platform only added 38 lbs to the rig, and the outboard and motor mount another 32 lbs. Handling felt the same , and comfort was much better as you could sit and stand and move around. We have gone hundreds of miles on these and there is almost nothing we would change. there a LOT of fun, and can go in inches of water or 4ft seas with confidence. GOOD SAILING

1988 Catalina 22 wing keel, powering upwind to Roster Rock on the Columbia river to find more wind......found some, more than a lot of sailors want. 25 gusting to 30. FUN and fast sail back home down wind with 1/3 of the roller furling head sail out.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SAILBOAT BUG BITES !!!
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
Sails two times.....SAILBOAT BUG BIGHTS, and its all over but the frenzy to find your own boat. I think from first sail to boat owner took a little over 10 days, plus 3 days adding and fixing thing to make it river ready. I give them 5 months intel the bigger boat bug bights.
Second time sailing (EVER) and Davids taking on Goliath. And the women did not even know it.

Yes we lost, but we had all the guys on the try turn at once and look at us like "What the heck, that little thing may be gaining on us". The fact that they ALL turned at once told us that we at least got there attention. Truth be told though .... we had the better wind. Second time sailing and he is ready to get his own boat. Anybody have a 1987 through 1991 Catalina 22 wing keel for sail lit ...

Sailing Columbia River on a Catalina 26 Capri. You can teach almost anyone how to sail from point A to point B in a very short time. What takes years to learn is what to do when everything goes wrong at the same time. and it seams like things always happen in threes. GOOD SAILING

I have one 9905.....great boat to have...no regrets
Thank yoooo 🎉!
Thank you so much. This is so helpful to find the best boat.
Awesome upgrades and explanations!
That’s gotta be the nicest C-22 I’ve ever seen, puts mine to shame
I have sailed and owned many 22's and 25's. I watched your video which has so much useful information! Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together! I have been away from sailing for a while and am now searching for a wing 22
Super nice
My first sailboat was a '84 C22. I loved that boat...sailed it all over Puget Sound for around 6 yrs until I got bitten by 2footitis. Tiny but we'd have the entire family aboard and the dog. Learned how to sail on her...upped the game later by crewing races on larger boats. Thanks for the memories.
Thank you for sharing g this. I'm a former Catalina 25 owner and I had the boat for about 3 years, then sold it and bought a 28', with I board yanmar and an enclosed head. Flash forward a decade or so and now I'm looking around 22' to 24' trailerables to set up for inland waterways cruising. I've got a couple Catalina 22's and a Hunter 22' to go check out this weekend. There's another one, a Catalina 23.5 or 24.5 I think that looks really nice at the same place. I'm hoping to find a gem and get it home to start outfitting. I can't wait to get a good night's sleep on the water again. Thanks for the motivation.
Would a "new design" C22 still be best years if 100% trailer sailing?
Note: when I asked this Q, I thought ALL New Design 86-91 boats had the Wing Keel. Irrelevant now that I know otherwise
Great video!
Very helpful
When I was a novice boater I put my 22 lb Claw way up on the beach and backed down on it with engine. I drug easily 35 feet in the hard and soft tidal sand. BUT, it did grab tight when it hit the water.
How many times per minute can you say "in my opinion" :)
Looking good, keep the Island videos coming!
That was a lot of great and useful information. Thanks.
Outstanding work and video!. I have a Catalina 250 (1996) and working on some upgrades. And I live in Vancouver (just down river from you). I would very much like to connect with you to learn more.
I sailed past your boat a few days ago, it is UP river from the bridge. Next time I am up river your way I will drop a note on her, and phone number so we can talk. GOOD SAILING.
Well done. Grummans, or any superior quality aluminum canoe work the best for this type of conversion because you can drill and fasten bolts and other fixtures and won't compromise strength one bit. I've made sailing trimarans from Grummans for years. if you can, at some point, try to get a Grumman 18. Lower stems and a longer waterline really increase your load baering and speed. The 18 was Grumman's version of a tripping canoe, and thel ower ends is not affected by the wind as much which helps while tacking. They also have a longer entry and departure section lines, so less full and bulky. Better slicing.
Hi, would one be able to single handed sail one on the seven seas? Thanks
Unfortunately not.......If you were good you could sail around the Bahamas.
@@johnjohnson6302 Thanks!
Hi John, great video and wonderful job! I also have a Catalina 250WK and wondering if you can tell me where you purchased your bow anchor roller. I would like to install one but can't seem to find one that will fit. Thanks John!
Thanks. Well done summary of the design evolution of the C22. I have a 1978 C22 and you aptly described the major issues with that early design. I bought the boat years ago, when I was a novice sailor and mostly ignorant about boat design. Your video could save Catalina buyers time and money. I live in the Columbia River Gorge and know exactly what you mean about the winds here.

Thank you for detailed information
I like the tent setup.
HI, what are the engine mount fasteners called. Thank You.
John please post your website info…. Great video. Do you have dimensions of your two shelves and bow water tank system?
Hey John, I have a 1986 Catalina 22 looking for the bracket you put on your pop top to hold it in the up position without raising the mast. Could you send me a link if you got it online? Great videos by the way... keep them coming.
Nice upgrades! For what it’s worth, the kick up rudder does pull up all the way but you have to know the trick: - If you pull too soft, the rudder only comes up halfway and stays horizontal at the waterline - If you pull too hard it comes up all the way but bounces back down - If you pull just right, it comes up all the way and stays there. I’ve had the Catalina 22 and 250, both with kick up rudders. I live by a shallow 10,000 acre lake so the kick up rudders are a must-have. They should come stock.
hi John, ive owned the 250 before was probably my favorite i've had, have you done any serious cruising on the 250?
keep the videos coming
The reason it changed in 91 were several factors according to Frank. 1 teak was getting very expensive. 2. the 86-91 boats were very heavy and were not competitive in one design races. Catalina 22 at one time had huge one design regattas and the top racers always raced the older boats since they were so much lighter. While the wing is great for maintenance, it cannot point. Great off the wind, not so much to the wind. Catalina wanted to revive the one design racers that brought so many people together, and cruisers were moving to bigger boats. I took off my safety lines because I couldn't fly my 150 without damaging it on the stanchions. I loved my Cat 22 and had it for 31 years. She was a great boat for anchoring in all those shallow coves of the Chesapeake Bay. The friendships I made with my local Catalina 22 fleet remain today, and while most of us have moved to larger boats, the friendships remain and we continue to cruise together. I do miss the one design races though, but it was evident that the world split into very serious racers that went with dedicated race boats like the J22 or Flying Scot, and others and casual racing one design just seemed to die out, some of it because the new boats were so much slower due to weight.
Great job ! Getting rid of that table and extending the v-berth was Genius.....................
This is a great video.
Thanks for sharing. I dont know if you will ever sail in bigger waves. But going down a wave, and reduce overall friction this shape would be safer: ruclips.net/video/MGLPcSW-meU/видео.html&ab_channel=HawaiianPaddleSportsLLC The curved shape means, that there will be upforce "diving" into a wave. And the slight U-shape means that the contact area will be as small as possible at all times.. It would be cheap and easy (a shaped square) to build from one sheed of plywood. And very little "fiber" and epoxy.
Great video, John! I also just bought a Catalina 250 and am having the same problem with my outboard motor not being able to turn as much as other sailboats I’ve had in the past. Specifically which motor mount did you use to mount with your outboard? I’d like to install the same one on mine. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas!
Great info
nice!
John great video! My wife and I own a 1980 Catalina 22 named Friday that we absolutely love. We just spent two years refinishing her and she turned out great. One thing I noticed is there is no bilge or way to drain water from the inside of the boat. I was wondering how other 22 owners deal with this? It’s never been a big problem for us but I found it strange that these boats have no bilge. I would love to hear yours or any other owners thoughts on this. Thanks again!
Suma dinj batta Catalina 22 agui fenni cog. Agui mun polo batta batta ! 👍
Wonderful video! It encourages us to go ahead and buy the 250 we have been seeing. Great and useful upgrades. The rudder upgrade is splendid
Thanks for sharing. I really like seeing what others have done to their boat. I have a RUclips video of my C250wk modifications at the following link: ruclips.net/video/IL8d3rktE0Q/видео.html
Dust.
Thank you.
Great video! How did you rig the spinnaker? How did you tack it?
Thanks Very MUCH!! Looking at these boats to get my first sailboat, done with boat clubs. Very informative and gave me some excellent pointers. Like your work!
Nice video John. Can you say something about your trailer. I’m always on the lookout for a trailer for my 1990 Catalina 22 Wing Keel. I know LoanRite makes one, but I think yours is different.
I’m going to guess that you realized later how its generally perceived to be dangerous to sail with the pop top up.
Sir this was an amazing video. What a Ton of good information that was. These are exactly the kind of things people must hear before buying a particular boat, and what a great boat model for this video. This is a top notch very insightful video. Thank you
Hello, nice set up, how did you cut the arch shape into the spacers?..what is the diameter of the arch?
Great video! Very informative!
Can you still get a pop top cover? Or should i say, do they still make them?
