Alright, let's set the record straight. The working conditions in Qatar are a serious issue that is ultimately the responsibility of the Gulf governments. They are exploiting workers from third-world countries at the highest level (I've seen it firsthand with my dad). 2nd, the environmental issues with construction involved in China are inconsequential because once again these issues fall on the local governments and any failures to do so are met with crackdowns by the party. China in the present day is on the record as the only nation to merge green tech with industrial output and they have reversed many corruption issues that were affecting the environment. Ultimately an architect can't micromanage at the level of local ordinances with enforcement of labor laws and budget either because just about everything is routed through third parties
I completely agree the responsibility for many of the issues typically addressed to Architects should actually be sent to local planners, government lawmakers and workers-unions to actually effect change and increase standards for workers / end users.
Damn, what was the name of that hotel with the pool? Thanks for posting it was fun.
Hey thanks so much! It was the Granbell Hotel Colombo 😊
You have to ask, were the deaths due to errors in the design, the working practices of the construction company, or the attitude towards health and safety of the site managers and individual workers? There's nothing in this film to identify the root cause issue. Sorry to say, it feels a little like mock journalism.
Totally get that mate. There were multiple cause and effect for the deaths in Qatar but this little video wasn’t specifically about such issues. This series is intended to be an overview highlighting particular aspects of Architects careers. I’m certainly not a journalist. I’m simply an Architect.
@@BlueprintBlogger Thank you for taking the time reply. The aspect of your piece that concerns me is its impact on the viewer, that Hadid should be blamed for the deaths personally, and further, to say that she didn't care. You only have to look at the way the migrant workers were treated by the government to see that the root-cause issue is most likely somewhere else.
I fully agree, I tried to show the point that her comments were made long before any construction on her building and that her name was cleared in the defamation law suit.
Zaha Hadid was one of the best architecture engineers in the last 100 years and the only woman engineer to be so.
I actually asked my colleague if she can name other female “starchitects” and we were surprised at how short that list actually is. If you have any suggestions for other female architects I could make a video about I’d much appreciate it!
She was definitely from the era of "starchitects", who didn't give a damn about surrounding context, client budget, or the insane effort by technically proficient engineers of bringing her wild creations to life. Noting her along Frank Gehry is a very apt comparison.
Starchitect is the exact terminology to describe her. Love her work or hate it, she left behind an interesting mark on the world.
@@BlueprintBlogger she did push boundaries and we need some people who are doing that I think my visceral reaction to her work is that it reminds me of architecture college where most instructors refused to teach us real world things like structure, code, and budget and told us to just go nuts and do basically art projects
And you just know if we tried to present her projects in college we would be eaten alive by the critics 😂
Criticising the government for the deaths is ridiculous, her buildings werent even commercially viable without a government with dodgy ethical practices. She would've just amounted to a concept artist and no more...
Well to be fair, as noted in the video, nobody had died building her design at the time of the comments. Meanwhile workers were dying due to poor oversight by the government.
When I came to Ireland in 2007 it wasn’t much better. I viewed a room for €750 a month with a thick red carpet, fireplace with a microwave on the mantle piece as the kitchen and a tiny shower built in a wardrobe - no light. Toilet shared in the hallway. Coming from Germany I couldn’t believe it! Worse than a third world country.
That sounds unreal! You really came just as we hit a recession as well 🥲
@@BlueprintBlogger In the end I had really good luck! I could rent a big room in a Georgien Townhouse from an architect lecturing in Dundalk who only would come home to Dublin during the weekend. During the week I had the house for myself. I really liked the architecture! The proportion and layout of the rooms. We don’t have this style in Germany so it was a very nice experience for me.
Okay good! I’m glad it all worked out for you 😁
The wallpaper with pictures 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫
It’s atrocious isn’t it 🙅🏼
Was paying 500€ a month for a room while working in Malta. Nothing as bad as this, but the other room had the exit of the AC from the folks below leading into his room right next to the bed - - they were boiling him like a lobster. Appliances were nice superficially but shoddy craftsmanship. Flushing the toilet didn't really work, there was a trick to it. The shower was a small L-shaped tub with no curtain and flooded the room. Many of the locks were really rough so you'd struggle to turn the keys; my flatmate ended up locked in the bathroom. I had to throw him a key through the window from my room as fortunately all of our windows just opened up into this weird empty shaft of about 2m² between houses. And after I left my flatmate messaged me to let me know that the landlord was putting up temporary walls around the living area right next to the open kitchen to rent out as another full-priced room.
Jeez… some of the stories you hear from people are just terrible. The exploitation these landlords get away with is nothing short of criminal. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience but hopefully there were some good memories too and you can always slag your mate for getting stuck in the toilet 🤷🏼♂️😅
A friend of mine was paying 750 euros for an 'apartment' that looked like a corridor. The conditions were so bad that I felt sorry for her. I left Dublin, Ireland in 2019, today, my 60sqm apartment is cheaper than the room I used to pay for.
I feel sorry for her hearing about it years later even 😢 I hope you ended up moving somewhere nice 👌🏻

I would love a series of 5 minutes summary of famous architects!
That’s the plan!
That room feng shui is okay I think, if the person sit behind the computer, she's already in a command position, diagonally across the door
Would you feel productive in that space? Personally, I don’t feel I could.
You didn't know who Nate Berkus is? I'm sure you never watched Oprah Winfrey Show 😂
Never in my life unfortunately 😅 I just know the “you get a car! You get a car! Bit” 😂
I believe in California they have a law that all pools deeper than 45 cm must be surrounded by a fence with a locked gate (you can search for yourself "pool fence California") and it's absolutely ugly. If you want to keep the aesthetic of your pool, you don't have any other option than making it shallow
That’s super interesting! Do you know why that law is in place?
Great chilling travelling to Sydney ❤
It was a fantastic time of my life ☺️

Please come back, and visit Kandy. Kandy is the only remining pre-colonial city in Sri Lanka, with the same historic street grid layout at the center. In my opinion it's the most stunning city in Sri lanka, at least the Lake area

If you're still in Sri Lanka and planning to go towards Kandy, try and visit the Temple of the Tooth, The Embekka Temple and the Trinity College Chapel. They are good examples for Kandian Era Architecture.
I didn’t get to explore anywhere near Kandy nor anywhere south of Colombo unfortunately but it just gives me more reasons to go back, thank you!
There is an aquifer down below the rock of Sigiriya and due to the weight of the rich water gushed up. In ancient time it probably was a big stream but now flow is only a trickle. As for the Apsaras the frescoes represent one of the scribbles says that they were the women who were in Kashyapa’s (the king) court including some from Greece.
That’s super interesting mate! Unfortunately they don’t let you take any videos or photos of the frescoes at Sigiriya so I didn’t want to be disrespectful by showing them here on RUclips. It seemed like a better secret for those who are adventurous enough to make the climb 😊
@@BlueprintBlogger there is a Greek (Ionian or Yonakas as mentioned in Texts) connection with the city of Anuradhapura where various items have been found 6m deep. Even the architecture of some ruins on ground level resembles to those in Greece and seen nowhere else. What is most interesting is the name ‘muta siva’ has found in a large rock inscription found only a couple of months ago. He was one of the sons of King Porus who had come to a place called Mangal Pura (Mangalore) a place near Bengaluru. So most probably there had been a North South mix both in India as well as Sri Lanka, it appears to me. That also explains the the wars our ancients got involved there, sometimes with help of South East Asian people, notably Sri Vijaya. King Porus’s children from Greek wife supposed have come with their helpers from that region and established colonies.
You really know your stuff, wow! Thanks for helping educate me 😊❤
Started with panoramic view of Altair, a creation of a world famous architect.

Beautiful yet impractical. An Architects dream 😂
No hsy duda sobre Los restos de Colón. Hace tiempo se hizo un estudio de ADN y se confirmó que sus restos están aquí en la catedral de Sevilla.
