When I took French history, in French, the Franks are part of the mix that created modern French people. Celts, Latins, Franks, all mixed together to create the modern French.

This whole question is based on English discrediting of the French. ''French'' and ''Français'' literally mean ''Frank'', but in 21st century English and French. After king Clovis 1 conquered the Gauls, he made everyone in his territory ''Franks''. By the time of Charlemagne and up until now the people of France all were ''Franks'' and were called as such by all the surrounding peoples and even those further into Arabic lands.

Your inability to see the continuity of these peoples and their culture, despite all the changes they have gone through, is nothing to be proud of. Charlemagne did not speak West Old Low Franconian. This term is by itself a contradiction - there was only either Old West Franconian or Old Low (East) Franconian. Actually, he was born in the area between Moselle and Meuse to a Franconian noble family which undoubtedly spoke not a Roman but a Germanic language in their daily life, and as this region belongs to the middle of the Rhenish fan, it must have been Old Middle Franconian. But as the High German consonant shift was almost complete by his birth, it was most probably already the Middle Franconian dialect of Old High German.
