#India #Fairness #Beauty #BodyPositivity #FairnessCreams #SkinColourDiscrimination #BodyImage #Bollywood #Documentary
Through advertisements, films and everyday life, women in India are constantly told that fairness equals beauty. Where did we get this idea? What does this do to women with dark skin? And where do we go from here?
This documentary was created as a student project by Anuja Premika, Desiree D’Souza and Neha Joshi, students of Masters of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism, St. Francis College for Women, Begumpet, Hyderabad.

Eat simple. Cut out dairy. Clear up that mental fog. Get some morning sun. Stretch. Walk in the woods. Love the animals around you. Be mindful of what you expose yourself to (Hell with Bollywood. I found my acceptance in defiant music genres like hiphop and reggae, reach out and find your own sanctuaries. Your nervous system knows what is good and what is toxic). Grow out your hair. Get plenty water. Get enough sleep. Lighten up your spirit. Smile to the sun and spread your light. GO FUCKING RASTA. Let them aunties and uncles run their mouths. And watch the capitalist beauty industry crumble as we smile in all our melanated glory. Come say hi to me, when you do feel that mental peace and that healthy AF skin. Sending you love and light from my soul. You got this, kings and queens. #FREETHEROOTS #KNOWYOURROOTS #YOURTONEISYOUROWN
Algo served me after 5 years
Wow, that baby oil commercial "healthy and fair" is jaw droppingly f***ed up!
Ram was never fair infact it's written in valmiki ramayan that he was tall dark and handsome also the murti in ayodhya is carved in black stone please don't spread misconceptions about our history and culture while commenting on the current society
O like rhe logo love your shade of beauty
Colorism
As a fairly lighter skinned person, I have seemed to notice that girls with darker skin have very fine features which are never appreciated.
Remember getting my first foundation from a store and the lady asked me do want one shade lighter or exact tone i dont know why i hated that question so much i am a medium tone girly to all the brown girls out there there is nothing wrong with the colour of your skin you are gorgeous
Confidence is the key and people realise that , so they crush your soul by crushing your confidence. Agli baar koi kala bole to bolo ja jakar gorapan chodhle suar ke bache
Girl lost me at...Aryan invasion theory it's already been proven to be false...gurrlll I'm very fair skin toned south Indian and there are many fair South Indians too and of course dark skinned too...and I have sisters and other family members who r very dark skinned and I agree 1000% about the bias and I want it to be gone coz I myself don't find fair skin that attractive it's actually about the features and aura the girl carries...so fair skin is actually over rated but don't appreciate the misinformation and the division of South Indians by the aryan dravidian theory...this video actually should be reported...it's dangerous to spread such wrong information about ur own great country's history
1:21 THIS STUPID ARYAN INVASION THEORY HAS BEEN REJECTED... INFACT ARYAVARTA is a term used in ancient Hindu texts to refer to the northern Indian subcontinent, particularly the area between the Himalayas and the Vindhyas, and from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea and DRAVID simply means a land surrounded by sea. INFACT THE SECOND LARGEST MIGRATION AFTER AFRICA TOOK PLKACE FROM INDIAN SUBCONTINENT....... so it was the OPPOSITE
I ditched the foundation overall just because it is almost always impossible to find a good match for my unconventional uneven south asian skintone. These days make up to me is all about good skincare, eyeliner, mascara, neat brows, eyeshadow on occasions, blush and a killer lipshade. Although it is not a permanent solutions but to anyone who is still struggling with insecurities regarding their skin texture and color, i hope you realise that beauty industry is highly biased towards fair skin, so if you can't find a good shade for your skintone it’s on them!
Just be yourself. That is beauty. 🙏🏽💚🌷💙❤️
Still, I don’t understand why people focus on skin color when they should actually be seeing a person’s character and cheerfulness. Those around me remain obsessed with the fairness of their skin tone, wanting to appear pale in photos while concealing their true complexion. It’s frustrating when people perpetuate harmful beauty standards or judge others based on superficial criteria
"Honey is dark & beautiful & doesn't have expiry date" wtffg are those lyrics?
India have a big problem with identity. They call themselve brown but they are all dark skin. Mind have to be change and evolute.
Who cares i am fair indian and i am proud to myself ❤
The irony of the tamil community is that they take so much pride in their language, culture, tradition, jallikatu but have an intense dislike to their own brown skin colour especially on girls.Tollywood makes it worse .The hate to ones own skin colour is sad.
Small correction, Ravana was a Brahmin from UP, not Dravidian
That is a way of destructing a society...hey will work as crazy to buy things to become something they can't and lose amazing things of being darker...that is so sad...
The strange thing is that there’s only a slight difference between those who are considered darker skinned and lighter skinned, only a few shades difference. To me all look like a typical Indian person, and they’re very attractive.
You can’t get rid of the fact that being physically beautiful will be an asset, particularly if you’re a woman. But the color of the skin is not what demonstrates beauty, rather the smoothness and texture of the skin reflects beauty, and younger skin is more likely to be attractive than mature skin.
Most indians are brown Im myself Mauritian my ancestors were indians. I have been to Europe more than 8 years and can tell you the amount of praises i got for my brown skin... But even before going there, i never wanted to bleach my skin though my grandma was also kind of obsessed with that... I have also learned to appreciate other cultures and beauties, african beauties I saw❤ They have evergreen skin unlike those bollywood actresses who always bleach... My favorite indian like Ashley Simone... Others lily singh, Tanushree Dutta...Tina Desai Like wake up girls!!! Hollywood is stealing your black/brown beauties while you only giving fake white skin indian girls roles in movies....
Their European colonizer taught them that Black is ugly and white skin, blue yes, straight blonde hair is beautiful. This is why they are trying to lighten up their skin.
I feel skin color is so negative with the asian community. It's either you're too dark or you're too fat. It's very nitpicky
Almost same in Bangladesh.
Funny how whites in America want dark skin, big butt's, and big lips. But the Asians want to be white in a hot country.
Well, people maybe you will finally start standing up against mommy & daddy, all the auntiiies & elders, drop the conditioned respect-without-anything-respectable attitude & smack the abuse committed by them right into their faces. Confront them, ridicule them for the audacity of having children while not having matured past toddler mindset themselves. Stop the nonsense. Don't keep toxic & abusive folks comfortable bc of made up concepts as 'culture' or 'family'.
No its based on skin shade not colour ie shadeism not colourism but Americans are so ignorant of course they wouldn't even think of that when speaking of this topic smh
I think every race has prejudice. The worse is black people on black people.
Rama is depicted as brown color not fair
This is really sad, as a South Asian living in the West I really don't understand why people would let this happen, are the people of South Asia masochists. What is really ironic is that as the West is beginning to accept diversity , we still have a problem accepting people of darker skin colour despite them making up a significant portion of the region.
Vanity of vanities. All is vanity. You are beautiful because you are created in the image of God. Period.
Wtf yrr literally....as bcoz I am black then I am not good person fuckt people's mentality ❌
it matters only in dating and SMV
IS it wrong for me to have skin preference? I mean girls have height preference, etc. Why is all that fine but not skin?
i dont shame any dark skin and wont EXCLUDE or treat them differentlly
Yeah but then individual preference should not be advertised as better than another person's preference.... Also what dictates color preference is conditioning from childhood ... what is normalised is what people prefer in adulthood
@samk6051 it doesn't matter anymore anyways its done for me
This is very sad because it happens in Africa too, and the scarier here is that the products do work, but demage the skin, but nobody cares as longs as they look like "Mulatas".
It's personal choice ppl who born with dark skin who love chocolate color see white fair skin as colonial ad ppl who born with white and fair skin see as beauty bcoz india is diverse north Indians and northeast are not dark they are white to light brown with beautiful face features north Indians have also sharp face features like europeans so choice is not disallowed but don't do propaganda all Indians should'be look dark
Yr daughter now chakka army beautiy standards
Every skin color is beautiful ❤❤❤ Its so obvious, I cant belive people are discriminated for being born with this or that appearence 😢
even phsychologist just said accepting your flaws! she accidently admitted that dark skin is a flaw! Before she tries to convince others that dark skin can be beautiful she needs to convince herself
I don't know of any society that does not put so much pressure on women to look a certain way. Why are men exempt? This is wrong on every level.
12:10 Absolutely disagreed! I am a fairly dark skinned Indian male and my grandmother often makes comments on my dark skin too. So much so she once said that I looked like a 'shudra boy' because of my skin. She equates skin colour with social class.
Why can people never understand that skin tone is just something you can’t change? It’s horribly disgusting, and I can never look at someone the same way if they say these disgusting things, “she’s too dark, so she’s ugly”.
Facial Sturcture >>> Skin Colour
I think Bollywood is a major force in perpetuating this idea that dark skin is ugly. When you are born with dark skin, all your relatives are going to either comment on your skin or drop a box of skin whitening products before leaving. Of course, this kind of mindset has been embedded in them because of Indian Pop culture and Mainstream media. In fact, a multitude of problems like Violence among youth, Harassment of women and now this are a product of Bollywood's influence.
Instead of your skin color...maybe India should worry about how dirty their country is.
All the dark complected women in this video are lovely
They are so beautiful. They have amazing features. But people only see their skin color which makes me sad 😞
I've been wondering, how come that actors from Bollywood movies are so light... They try to be lighter, others try to be darker, like many people in Europe, and they sunbathe or use solarium. World is crazy.
In the west, being dark is correlated with exotic holidays and sunbathing, in the east it is correlated with toiling in the sun like the lower class.
I am Indonesian and this is HAPPENING HERE TOO! Even a guys got discriminated by saying names and such if having a dark skinned, well the girls here got it worse, so bad that ppl just ignoring them like they didn't exists if they have dark skinned,,, The Korean pop culture make it WORSE! The only beauty that accepted here is lighter and fairer skin, the lighter the better even for a guys, and much more so for girls!
Life is too short to argue. When someone says to me, "you are so pretty but dusky. If only you were fair." I say "sounds like a YOU problem not ME problem."
