Returned · 2022 Magna FG: Worrying defects from Vivobarefoot
Vivobarefoot's 2022 Magna FG showing worrying defects, most notably where the outsole is glued to the upper. Acorn colorway looking great nevertheless, and the laces are an appropriate size!

M sounds the best to me
Having enough toe space is absolutely and totally crucial. Once I got used to have this roomy freedom feeling in my Vivo Gobis, I literally couldn't go back and had to get rid of quit a bit of other barefoot shoes that didn't deliver on that particular point.
What size are those shoes?
@@pat2982 EU 48
Great. I just bought these and I have a place in Croatia and go there every summer. Good to hear they handle the rocky areas well. Thanks. By the way - instead of your other light athletic shoes, try Xeros. Much wider toe box.
For the price, the fact that delaminating seems to be an ussue is inexcusable..
My concern with these shoes was, that the material looked absolutely rubbish only after a few months of usage. But I have noticed that Vivo have improved their materials recently.
Thanks for this review - other you tubers do not discuss the negatives.
Hi, I have a new VIVOBAREFOOT MAGNA LITE WR SG MENS CHARCOAL. My shoes also make a pretty loud sound when they bend. What are your experiences? Does this sound go away? I am tempted to return the shoes because of this sound.
I'm not sure if the plop sound will go away. My long-term experience with the Magna is only those with leather uppers, not synthetic ones like on your Lite WR's. None of those leather pairs ever made a persistent or loud plopping sound when I was wearing them in, and once worn-in, they're all silent. When I tried (and ultimately returned) those Magna Trails with the synthetic upper, the plopping sound was obvious and didn't noticeably diminish after a couple kilometers of walking. You could always walk/hike around with them to really test them out, and if you're still not satisfied, then you can take advantage of Vivobarefoot's return policy (assuming it applies to your purchase). Their return policy is especially made for that - to guarantee satisfaction after real-world use.
Okay. Thank you so much for the long answer!@@larsmaxfield
The only thing holding me off from trying these is my concern over durability and longevity of these shoes.
Not great I agree, and arguably all these shows are overpriced for less materials/soles but we're paying for them being on the newer side of the market VS the classic effortless marketing of known trainer brands. Saying that, I'd rather see these are glued than worry there's no glue, to be fair. I've got a few Primus with glue showing I've worn for a good while, but at least I know they're stuck down.
Great review. I really love my Vivobarefoot boots and shoes. What do you use to clean and waterproof them? So far I've been using Pink Miracle products and find that they work pretty well on the Suede like leather.
So you received a defective shoe therefore no one should buy it - got it lol I've had my FGs for almost a year now, wear them literally every day, workout in them and have washed them - still look great with the exception of some minor fading that conditioner can't fix. No issues with stitching or seams anywhere and I've done countless sets of calf raises and squats.
Great to hear that your pair of FGs are holding up. The two 2021 pairs I have are also holding up and are my go-to travel shoes. My intent with this video was not to imply no one should buy them - I also don't state that in the video - but instead to share my concern that a pair with readily visible defects seemingly passed through Vivobarefoot's quality control. No manufacturing process is perfect, but I think it's fair to expect a higher level of quality when paying a relatively higher price for goods.
Does the 'ploppy' sound go away with wear?
Lars, to use the code, it asks for your email address.
It should only be asking for your personal email. My understanding is that Vivobarefoot then sends you the code via that email, and then you need to use that email when ordering with the code. I checked the link and it looks like that is indeed still the case. If it asks for *my* email, then I can't help you there.
@@larsmaxfield This may be a difference between ordering from US and Europe. Although it has emailed me a code, when I want to check out and use the code, it asks me about the name and email address of the person who has referred me and not that code! No problem. I will try to contact their customer service.
@@honeyhendesi9263 Ah, that's new for me. Vivobarefoot likely changed their system for the way codes are used. You can try contacting them, but I'm not certain how far you'll get.
got some magna FGs in mens US 9 and they're way too large. the insole is supposed to be 26.6 cm according to their sizing chart but they're almost 28 cm long - closer to Vivo's size 11. likely won't be able to return them as i live in the states and return shipping would cost too much + the refund would take too long. gonna have to sell them :/
Btw I bought these using your discount code 😁
Just got mine and they're seperating between the upper and sole already in less than 15k steps. Vivo need to get their act together for £170
My fgs have come apart between upper and soul in less than 20k steps. V poor QC
I don't really think it's acceptable for shoes marketed at £170 to come away like that after only a few months of use. They're also marketed as highly water resistant which can't be the case if these adhesives are coming loose. V disappointing
Invalid discount code :(
I double-checked the link in the description and it still appears to work on my end. The terms limit only once per referred customer, so that might be the issue!
I think the new ones are actually true to size unlike the last pair of vivos that I bought. I am very satisfied with the black ones
I've had the black Magna Trail FG's on the right of the video for a couple weeks now and I'm really thinking about returning them. On my right foot in particular they were loose around the mid to top (I believe it's because my feet aren't 100% the same) but I did feel that 'floss' feeling of the laces which isn't very pleasant. On my right foot I also noticed the rubbery ploppy sound yesterday for the first time.
Thank you for the video. Did you have to size up versus your normal size? If yes, how did it feel? It seems to be a very common problem with vivo owners.
Really liked the video, just curious as to your shoe size for the standard shoe you showed and your Vivobarefoot…2 sizes up? Thanks!
Why the heck these shoes so expensive 🤦
Because the big shoe companies haven't caught on yet; when they finally do, they'll wipe out these overpriced shoe makers
Great Video!
Thanks Lars!
Thanks Lars!
Great Video!
Does the leather stretch at all? Even a quarter size? I'm between sizes and the larger feels too flappy/loose but very comfortable, the smaller feels more secure but a tad too snug in the midfoot. If they'd stretch even the tiniest bit they'd be perfect. I'm no stranger to sizing down and breaking in leather climbing shoes so I'm curious if these will stretch out enough to be comfortable. I don't like wearing thick socks as my feet tend to sweat and almost always wear ultralight Darn Tough wool socks so I want to avoid the larger size.
The leather does stretch, but I can't confidently say how much. My feeling is that if it's still too snug even when the laces are completely loose, then the shoe won't stretch to a satisfactory point. I'm taking this from my own experience with initially having a size 47 and then moving up to 48. If the 100-day unconditional return policy applies to your purchase (and if you still have enough time), then I'd say just try putting some nice mileage on the smaller pair and see what happens in terms of stretch.
@@larsmaxfieldI’m the same as you, in between a 47 & 48. Did you find that you needed a larger size after adapting to barefoot style footwear?
@@gregaustin8114 Yes. I went somewhere between a half- and whole-size up in EU shoe size. That also includes feeling much more comfortable with wider toe-boxes - I really can't stand traditional dress shoes for more than an evening nowadays.
Zo the best is the 2020 version?
Time to revisit the Magna Trail?
Would you say the leather/wool is warmer?
Exactly the video i was looking for, thank you!
Glad I bought mine in store, so I could check for defects. I agree, stitching instead of glue, would be preferred.
get some Lowa's
I just bought these and walked three evenings. The shoes are hurting my upper feet at the place beneath the lowest lace strain. In the inside of the shoes there is a seam /ridge that is hurting me a lot. What to do about that?
My first thought is the tightness of the laces. For me, I can walk with the Magna FG models with pretty loose laces and still feel relatively secure in the shoes. You probably already tried this though; but if not, I do suggest loosening up the laces and try again. Another thought is that the elasticity of the laces (or rather inelasticity) means there's no stretch of the shoe across the top of your foot. I actually use a different set of laces (Nathan Run Laces) on my Magna FG for easier loosening and tightening, and there's the added advantage of them being quite elastic compared to the original laces, which means my upper feet indeed have more flexibility and room. Other than that, I can't think of anything else besides returning them. Vivobarefoot has that 100 day return policy which allows you to really wear the shoes and see if they're right (or wrong) for you.
@@larsmaxfield Hi Lars thanks for your reaction. This evening I walked with very loose laces. I could put 3 fingers beneath them. But the pain is a mechanical problem. I can feel a seam in the shoe under the last lace strain. It feels like a wedge of iron which hurt a lot. Even if I don't walk but only bend my foot. I wonder if this is a new thing in the Acorn model. I am going back to the shop.
Let us know what you learn
@@DanielMaidment I am walking for 2 weeks now. I have only the ridge pain in the right shoe/foot. But slowly by walking and wearing the shoe the stifness is going away. I think because the leather is warmed up by my feet. But it is a long process.
@@jeroenvanderhorst1513 I have the primus lites. Early on they would fold over the knuckle of my big toe, due to the relative firmness of the upper and the softness of the sole. I was super worried, but the upper softened within a couple of weeks and I haven't had the same problem since. Maybe you were experiencing something similar?
Disappointing to see this. I have a genuine concern that Vivo are focusing too hard on reducing Materials / costs etc at the expense of quality. And I think some of it is also down to the somewhat limited run they do before each design is tweaked or changed. Doesn’t look great now matter how you look at it and for a nearly £200 pair of shoes you expect a better finish than what’s been coming out their factories of late
You`d think they would inspect before sending to a known youtuber. I ordered the standard obsidian with gum soles, and they arrived in perfect condition. I was pleased with the improvement of a tighter wool upper and shorter laces.
Yeah I noticed it too, it seems something is going on with their newer models, it feel like a hit or miss at times, I remember the older models being far more consistent.
@@YTesting agree. I’ve returned a pair due to quality issues. As you say very hit and miss at the moment. Interestingly they’re on a quest to use as little material as possible to reduce their impact on the environment. Great in theory but my concern is what happens when you take that to the extreme? You could end up with a very flimsy shoe that barely stays together. There’s a reason their Tracker boots are their best seller. It’s still a boot that requires a lot of material/ manufacturing.
@@harrisonmudge Exactly, you are spot on. I must acknowledge that vivo has grown an immense amount the last few years, and whether the quality issues are because of their lack of consistent QA due to the growth or the investment into using less material, I cannot answer, but a trend can be seen, even here on youtube, related to glueing issues, sole issues, basic color discoloring, storage and shipping issues. I just hope they will figure it out.
@@harrisonmudge Maybe they just grew too fast and didn't manage to scale their business accordingly.
Show the bottom of the shoe!
It's a beautiful shoe. I'm thinking it would work for me when I visit northern England in September. Lots of walking in villages and the countryside.
Hi, Did you get them for your trip? My order is on the way. I'm getting them for the Pacific Northwest weather where I live - wet and cool most of the time. And considering to take them to northern Vietnam trip in late fall and yes for walking/trekking in countryside and mountains. It's on sale for women's style rn. 🙃
@@MộtMình_VẫnVui hi, no I didn't! I still haven't found a shoe to take with me 😔 I want to try the Vivos but I'm worried about the return process if they don't fit. If they're on sale though I may have to give it a try! Please let me know how you like them when they arrive 😊
@@elizabethw.454 It’s hard to find shoes that do -it-all and comfortable for individual feet. I want to pack light for my trips so allowing Max 1 pair of feet and 1 pair in luggage. I’ll share with you about the shoes. Hopefully they arrive asap. Vivo offers 100 days trial so you could order and test them. but their shipping is slow depending on where you live.
@@MộtMình_VẫnVui I think I will end up bringing 2/3 pairs of shoes. One pair are dressy loafers that lay flat and weigh nothing. I think leather will be best for where I'm going but I won't ever use thick leather where I live in the south. It's too hot all year round. If I bring canvas/mesh I will definitely need two pairs. Good to know about Vivos return policy! I hope yours work well and fit perfectly 😊
wouldnt mind a review on the new magna esc mens ;-) Cant find one anywhere.
I'm kinda wishing I ordered the Magna trail for more "everyday"use. I bought the Tracker Forest ESC for when it rains or everyday weather use.
I appreciated your thoughtful, detailed review. And good news to note: Magna FG in leather with merino wool cuff is currently on the Vivobarefoot shop.
Nice follow up. So what do you use for running? I'm looking for hiking/trail running shoes. After watching many reviews I'm considering trying xero mesa trail shoes, after having used my merrell trail gloves for quite a while :)
Not a runner myself but I've heard lots of good things about Xero!
Did you find that they widened up?
Hey everyone! I picked up some Magna FGs recently. How do you treat/clean the leather? Seems a little suede-y. Got any tips?
Saddle soap. I know the brand otterwax sells some.
Good review 👍 I completely agree with the ploppy sound ☹️
Thankyou for the vid, I’m am really interested in these So did you go for the same size as you would with your other shoes? And one of the biggest things I’m interested in is how waterproof and breathable they are . It doesn’t really say much on the website but maybe i never looked hard enough . If water got up near the laces to where the wool bit begins would it get wet inside ? Or is the wool area waterproof ? Sorry if I’m confusing ! Maybe I should just ask , in how deep of water would you be confident stepping into ? I heard another reviewer of the non leather version say his were waterproof for a while then it wore off and he would recommend the leather and wool versions instead Greetings from Scotland 🏴
you forgot to spend the first 5 minutes talking about what a barefoot shoe is. How it's flexible, thin sole, with a wide toe box. haha!
I wear size 7/7.5 should I size up with this specific model?
I'm not sure in this case since you're a "low 7"; I'm a "high 47" (meaning 47.5-48.0), and 47 shoes from Vivobarefoot have always been just bit too snug. I can only recommend trying both 7 and 8 in your case as a 7 may indeed be just right!
