Pollen Ainne... I haven't played any game, but watching part of it from a Twitch stream made me interested in one thing: Aerith. This person stuck in my brain, it really took just a few moments for me to like her. I haven't played it but I'm in love with Aerith. I also researched Tifa for being the most popular, but it's not the same for me. Thanks to your videos I now know that the path I would take would be with Aerith. No regrets. Looking forward and moving forward. In the end it's about how I connected with this story, so it's my decision, right? Thank you so much!!

Nobody will ever read this, but it's important to note that Cloud's personality in Acts 1 and 2 of the OG is so similar to 'revived' Cloud in Act 3 that discussion of any differences is essentially academic. Revived Cloud is slightly less cocky, and a bit more self-effacing, but the Cloud we see in Acts 1 + 2 is, for all intents and purposes, 'true Cloud.' When people talk about Aerith loving Cloud because she thinks he's Zack, or is too similar to Zack, it's an enormous red flag that they don't understand two critical points: 1) Zack in the OG is basically a non-character - he has like 10 lines of dialogue in total. It isn't at all clear what he's like. His only purpose in the story is to serve as a model for Cloud to mimic (mostly in body language) and a driver for the '5 years ago' part of the plot. And 2) even in the OG, Aerith is very clear that, while she still thinks about Zack and wonders what happens to him, she has moved on (she is even more explicit about this in Remake and Rebirth, flat-out telling Cloud in the latter that she has fallen in love with him). Cloud's illness is defined by a) his obsession with Sephiroth, and inability to grasp the meaning of or avoid the Reunion (and thus hand Sephinova the black materia), and b) refusing to acknowledge the enormous gaps in his own memory. He isn't living Zack's life - he's just using Zack's existence as 'generic soldier first class' to prop up his battered ego and block confronting the horrors of having been Hojo's test subject. That's it. This makes narrative sense, since it would be disconcerting if, upon his retrieval from the lifestream, Cloud turned into a completely different character. The writers in the OG knew they couldn't do this - it would be like permakilling the hero, and inserting a doppelganger into his place. So Cloud mostly just is who he is throughout the tale, albeit with some slight tweaks. Cloud throughout the story is the 'real' Cloud. He's just slightly confused about his past and motives for 2/3rds of the story. Thus, even in the OG (and certainly in Remake/Rebirth), the person that Aerith is falling for is Cloud - not 'Zack' or 'Cloud's interpretation of Zack.'

Would love to see part IV along w/new videos that look at the developments from Rebirth. Can't wait for the third game.

Since the game has those options that can make you have a different outcome depending on your choices, why cant it be the same for love interests? Cmon tifa and cloud KISSED i aint denying they're relationship but people shouldn't deny Aeriths and clouds too

I hope you don't mind me re-visiting this particular topic, even though it's been years. So I am in agreement with the premise of the video that Cloud and Tifa were not close friends in childhood, which was revealed in the Lifestream. But what may be overlooked from Pollen's interpretation of the sequence is how Tifa played no small part in keeping up the appearance of being 'childhood friends' with Cloud until the Lifestream showed otherwise. Though to be fair, Pollen (and some commenters) made some the same points I'm going to make in the Zacloud Fallacy video. I want to try and be clear with my language in making the following claims. I don't think Tifa was intentionally deceiving Cloud for her own ends; this isn't a case of her lying to him about their relationship as kids when she knew that the reality was quite different. This feels more like her... how do I put this... imagining herself to be closer to Cloud as children than the actual reality after The Promise she got from him (about him being a SOLDIER and saving her if she ever was in danger)... and believing what she tells herself on the subject. To try and put this in as neutral a term as possible, she misled Cloud about the nature of their childhood relationship and she didn't even know she was misleading him. In hindsight, I don't think enough has been made of her (unintentional) deception or this keeping up the appearance of 'childhood friends', because it could explain why Cloud and Tifa's relationship feels so tense sometimes in the game(s) -- and in a bad way. Their desire to have banter and small talk that resemble close childhood friends FAR outpaces their actual ability to do so. It's not just a matter of them being shy and introverted (though that was certainly a factor); even if they weren't, they know so little about each other that there are very few common memories of childhood that could emotionally connect them in a good way. The only old memory I could think of that wasn't a negative experience was The Promise, which is doing a ton of work in convincing both that they had a significant and meaningfully positive relationship growing up. If you are just looking at their common memories before the start of the game, they include what Sephiroth did at Nibelheim (which is obviously scarring to the both of them) and their climb up Mount Nibel (which is also a bad experience for the both of them). The fact that Tifa unintentionally misled Cloud, in making him think he's her childhood friend, could also explain why their relationship continues to be rocky after the OG, AC, DoC and perhaps beyond. Even if you take away the grief and depression that comes from Aerith's death (which was something that obviously weighed heavily on Cloud), by Case of Tifa Cloud knows full well that he was living with a woman who passed herself off as his close childhood friend when she was only his acquaintance/neighbour in the village. I dunno, even if one takes the wider context or the legitimately good reasons why she did so (like her looking out for Cloud when she sees that he isn't alright when they first met and that his memories are jumbled), that just feels like a major betrayal of trust that will likely take years and years and years to rebuild (if at all). Cloud will obviously have his good days with her, but in the back of his mind he will always wonder what else she is keeping from him, what else she might not remember clearly that would come back to haunt them, or what else she isn't telling him. He still cares for her and doesn't wish ill on her, but there will always be that undercurrent of suspicion on his end. If you'd allow me to quote myself from a different video: 'That's why I think he [Cloud] continued to long for Aerith, at the end of OG and through to Advent Children. Things are far less complicated with Aerith. Cloud knows where he stands with her and vice versa'. I wonder if the Remake Trilogy is going to focus on Tifa's role in the misleading impression that she was childhood friends with Cloud, the consequences that come from keeping up that appearance, and her having to answer for it in some shape or form. In the OG, Cloud admits that he was living in an illusion of his own making. But now that I really think about it with the evidence I have on hand, he wasn't the only one... and that other person never had to come to terms on the matter.

I absolutely love your videos regarding Cloud and Aerith. Many people still wish to ship Cloud with Tifa, and that is okay if that is what they want to do. But I truly believe, just like you do, Cloud truly loves Aerith and she loves him. Cloud never loved anyone before and always pushed people away and put up his defenses, never letting anybody in. Being rejected and never fitting in as he grew up, he formed a protective barrier that kept people out. Tifa is also outside that barrier with Avalanche and everyone else. Aerith alone broke those barriers and saw the true Cloud.... a terrified, guarded, emotionally wounded troubled soul who just wanted to be accepted and loved like everyone else. Those that he grew up around always rejected him and made him feel like he was never wanted, just like it was depicted with Tifa and Avalanche rejecting him again and he didn't care because that is what he was used to. Aerith, being a powerful empath and a genuinely good hearted person, saw this in Cloud. She did not do this out of pity and sympathy, but she saw the person underneath all of those protective layers and wanted to love him and make him feel accepted and that he mattered to her just being who he was. He did not have to join SOLDIER or go out of the way to impress her. She loved him for him. I will always believe this to be the true canon. The Final Fantasy VII remake is a love story between cloud and aerith.

I don't think Aerith's & Cloud's relationship is complicit. In the real world Zack have already died 5yrs ago so someday Aerith would have to move on with her life & b happy again & shud stop grieving & mourning in Zack's memory bcoz that wud'nt make him come back. So Aerith's & Cloud's special bond is valid & the feeling's they have for each other wud b accepted by other's too.

15:18 really spot on, there was a scene in rebirth where Zack about to choose saving Cloud or Biggs, he then recalled what Marlene told him that Aerith has feeling for Cloud, he choose to save Cloud. What a real gentleman. Love your video btw, hope you will make something out of FF7 Rebirth.

Even with Rebirth out now, I still see Clerith as the one that makes most sense. Tifa doesn't really understand Cloud, which is why she ends up fighting with him more. Aerith, on the other hand, does. That's what makes Cloud open up.

This was really well done. And I say that as someone....well....who favors a certain martially-trained barmaid what did you think of Rebirth? Might you make some videos on that?

This aged well since the new game. I think he likes both girls, but for too long people have been biased against Clerith since Remake came out. He definitely liked Aerith. It was a new developing love that we got to follow along the way. And its had nothing to do with being possessed by Zack's feelings or whatever cope that is. People should consider just how much that would undermine the impact of the story and her loss for a Cloud - if true. A long lasting legacy of this game is Aerith's loss. Why spend the time writing those songs (Hollow & NPTK) only to be like...oh, nevermind. All of his strong feelings towards Aerith were cause he had Zack's feelings for her somehow. It just strips away depth just so people can comfortably slot them into neat couples when it's more complicated than that.

I love coming in here 3 years later post Rebirth, and being SO glad to find a video essay about this because of just how prevelant the "Cloud is actually Zack/Cloud absorbed Zack's memories so that's why he loves Aerith" arguments have been on just about every single video I've clicked on talking about Aerith or Cloud to any extent. I'm new to the fandom too (just started with OG FFVII about 2-3 weeks ago and I've already wound up finishing it, Remake, and Crisis Core and am now onto Rebirth) and it's been quite the ride seeing just how much hate and misconceptions are out there about these two and the overall plot of the story. I still find it so baffling how anyone could possibly misinterpret the scenes in the OG when it's so clearly spelled out for them as to what happened by Cloud himself. The storytelling in this series is absolutely incredible!! And the relationship between Cloud and Aerith one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen crafted in media. They really do compliment each other extremely well while also being wholely uplifting and encouraging of the other. It's sad to see people so commonly write off their complexity and strength as characters because of a ship they want. Not only is it insulting to their character arcs and their development over the course of the games, but it's also an insult to the overall story plot. Thank you for uploading this and giving me a good dose of "thank god I'm not the only one who thinks that argument is absurd" lmao

Cloud adopted Zack's memories as his own. That is, he thinks that everything that happened to Zack happened to him. Hence the feelings for Aerith.

Really looking forward to your assessment of the rebirth( especially I’m interested in so called tifa’s route, jealous cloud is something else ) . What I find fascinating about the second part of the remake trilogy is no matter what route you choose , it all leads back to aerith. Square enix needs to give us a duet between cloud and aerith as the theme song for the third part

Cloud being blunt to Aerith is not a good thing. You want him to be sweet like he is to Tifa to show love coming from him. Coming from a relationship where my ex was blunt, all I could hope for was he be sweet like Cloud is to Tifa.
