    Hey Lotus, could you showcase a couple games where Coalition wins? In all your videos except one Imperial wins. As a new player it feels like the only way for Coalition to have a chance of winning is if Imperial is braindead/has a player drop.

    An intresting battle and a great presentation! French were caught off guard though they had scouted pretty well and the coalition main axis of advance had been identified in time. They also wasted their cav in some cases. The Russians were unstoppable till their moral failure due to their losses, the flanking fire of French and the Imperial overwhelming artillery superiority. A phyric and much unexpected victory. Till next video cheers!!

    I still find It hard to believe that 200-400men firing from 30/40 meters on a body of men only hits like 1 person. even by pure chance it should be more.

      it was more common for firefights to stay close to or above the optimal range, so 100-150 yards (91meter/137meter)

      @@3rdsmite766 scale in the game is not 1:1 for distance. Try out close range volleys and see how many models you can mulch with quality infantry. Additionally, not every sprite in game represents a single individual in the real world, instead each represents 7 men. Historically however, low hits and ineffectiveness of shooting is accurate: "Prussian, French, and British tests indicated that 500 men firing two volleys....at 100yds could, in theory, expect to obtain 500-600 hits (50% hit rate). Actual combat experience, however, indicated that due to the thick smoke, careless loading, and various malfunctions, the number of hits, at best, ranged between 6 and 15 percent...The first volleys were the most deadly; thereafter effectiveness declined sharply." ( Gunther Rothenberg. "The Art of Warfare in the Age of Napoleon. Indiana University Press, pg 65)

      ​@@dogelorestrategy Its also true what I commented before, most firefights either stayed at max distance or if they went closer it usually led into some sort of charge with bayonets(after the close range volley.)

      @3rdsmite766 at max range, muskets had under perfect conditions something like 25% acc between 250-300 yards at targets 6x10ft. British officers noted that past 80yrds getting hits was almost pure luck.

      @@dogelorestrategy They knew that yes, The British were really good at keeping the men in check, and could hold fire until the enemy was close and fire a volley. But 2 armies exchanging fire for multiple volleys at close range wasn't that common.

      it's mostly that I doubt RhB was expecting mass gun spam to completely block them in. They had a total of 6 guns. Massena alone had 9, all of which were better quality and better caliber. He also spent at least 3000g on them. Coal probably paid less than 1200g for all of their artillery, for the entire team.

    Rosenberg player here : Good analysis of the battle, at least from the Rheinbund perspective. Losing our guns early and the sheer mass of guns on marmont's side threw off our plan of attacking north completely, and we had no backup plan, wich resulted in the disjointed attack on Davout. On a side note : I am never playing Rosenberg again

    Your approach to focus on the tactics and the maneuver play is great . I disagree with speeding up the video. After all your great explanation and insights is nice to watch how the strategy is realized in detail. Also a bit more of mid distance views and some focus on artllery shots would prettify the video. By this I dont mean I dont like the way you present battles. In fact you are maybe the only NTW3 RUclipsr who does not focus on obsolete graphics by using ground level camera shots. Your videos are different and going towards the right direction. IMHO there is no reason to reduce their duration by accelarating them and also at some points bring the camera a bit closer to critical areas of the battle so that we can enjoy the small player decisions from a closer distance. The result will simply be perfect. Keep up with the good work. Looking forward to your next video

      Yeah but even with them, massena had more and better guns than all of coalition. It's a problem for 1809A and I'm not always sure about the solution. You're stuck with the need to maneuver and attack with armies that are slower and whose attacking method is attrition.

    I just started getting into Napoleon Total War and, subsequently, the NTW3 mod. Your videos have been instrumental in helping me learn to play, learn unit formations and tactics, and even just get an overall feel for these very large scale battles.     less than 100 men per unit can't be bataillon size , a bataillon was more several hundred of men . Same for cavalery regiments . there you are more in a companies size

      NTW3 is scaled to 1:7, so 100 models in game represent 700 men IRL.

    Hey Lotus, you keep mentioning that the Napoleon player should just melee the coalition. I was wondering could you elaborate on what that would look like tactically. Is it as simple as just having your high star gen, like napoleon, near your units as they attack in melee? Or is it using cav to force squares and disruption, and then sending infantry to melee with your general nearby. I would like to hear your input, thank you!

    18:00 I'm surprised that the game designers thought grenadiers should be such mediocre shooters, just because they were good melee fighters. Realistially, they were superior to line troops in ranged as well as in close combat. Their tall stature gave them an advantage in loading their muskets, and it even gave them slightly longer range, as the bullet's trajectory began at a higher height. Grenadier training didn't emphasise bayonet over musketry. They trained both of those with equal or higher diligence as all the other troop types. There was nothing a line infantryman could do, that a grenadier couldn't do better. I guess they thought rock-paper-scissors is more fun than realisic gameplay. It isn't. It only dumbs down tactics.

      @@tea6289 Well, yeah, of course they did it for balancing, that much is obvious. But why did they choose to balance it in this lame, gamey and unrealistic way? They could have gone the realistic way, increasing the grenadiers' cost and limiting their recruitment capacity to 1 grenadier unit for every 4 other infantry units. Historical wargames shouldn't be gamey.

      @@Timrath Personally I agree with you and I'm always in favor of realism. But the reality is that no other mods really come close in realism despite it's shortcomings. There are realistic mechanics/design choices in place in this mod that are absent in all other mods, and even the majority of Total War titles to begin with. No other mod thus far has actually made cavalry have to gain speed before charging effectively. Every other "realistic" mod out there has cavalry able to just instantly charge no matter the distance. Melee and morale in general is far more like it was in real life than it is in any other mod. Melee's in NTW3 do not last as long as they do in vanilla, it's very decisive and quick with one side usually breaking rather quickly. This is far more true-to-life than the slugfests that were vanilla melee engagements, with units being able to sustain catastrophic casualties before breaking. This mod is unique, in my experience in that it tries to be both competitive and realistic. This leads to some interesting choices that simultaneously are both realistic and unrealistic at the same time. Like light cavalry in this mod, for example. The way line of sight works is very gamey in that units have varying line of sights. As opposed to vanilla, which despite having line of sight you can usually just see a large portion of the enemy's army from the start of the game. Light cavalry in vanilla as a result aren't used as reconnaissance/screens like they are in NTW3. Using unrealistic means to achieve realistic results.

    So, if you play as the French. What is the general game plan. Get into Melee as fast as possible? Or is it like maneuver, concentrate at a critical point ,and defeat the enemy either via shooting or melee using combined arms. Like what is a step by step play a person should follow if playing as France? Also, should you as France try to bring 30 or 25 units as possible or not always?
