    Coleman seems to have started sealing their founts at some point. I have two 295's from 2000, both have a pink-ish sealant inside. Not a collector, just an observation.

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman 14 дней назад

      I don't know wha material Coleman used as a sealant inside their founts. It's not epoxy. The Wichita factory seems to have started using a brown-coloured sealant sprayed into the founts in the early 70s. In the 80s the colour changed to pink and the material seems to have become less durable. The Toronto factory started using it as well around that time.

    Thanks Bill. We have a 220D lantern dated B of 1950 and my husband noticed some small differences between yours and ours. First, the lantern identification on ours is on the right side over the pump and is stamped on a larger panel. Second, instead of the pump screws being at 12 and 6 o'clock ours is at 9 and 3 o'clock. Finally, the green Coleman sunshine logo on the globe is very bold but lacks the "PYREX Made in U S A" on the reverse. It may be a reproduction globe. Any thoughts?

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman 14 дней назад

      Most models had a variety of small variations through the course of their production runs. The globe sounds like a Canadian globe from '62-'64.

      @@king.coleman Thanks Bill, This green Coleman sunrise logo over Made in U.S.A. is a Canadian 1962 globe. Confirmed on Old Coleman Parts blog. How it wound up on a 220D 1950 lantern puzzles me. It looks very good and I think I'll keep it for now. Unless I find a Made in Canada 220E or 228E lantern.

      @@junelipinski2025 Toronto didn't make 228s in the E or F variety. Canadian 220Es are plentiful and kind of neat, because they were made in red instead of green. The Canadian 220Fs are a lot harder to find.

    I have a Jan of 29 L228. it pulses until it gets good and hot. The gen has been cleaned (taken apart soaked in Vinegar soften the carbon) used a small cleaning brush to clean the inside of the gen out. after reinstalling the tip It was easy to see light through it. it has good flow of air or fuel through it. the fun part is getting the tip cleaner and rotating handle back together. you did a beautiful job restoring it. the bog hat are one of my favorite designs, your right they do make great table lamps.

    Although the slants are different and every die-hard collector should own at least one of them, the design was incredibly poor compared to what they already had on the market (L427 and L227). Would love to know the background to the development of the slant design.

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman 23 дня назад

      It's a great design. At the time everyone was coming up with their own designs to allowing lighting without preheating. I'm partial to Akon's design, but it was seriously over-engineered. Coleman came up with a very simple system that worked. In those days fuel was often contaminated and that proved to be a problem, hence the "B" revision that survived into the 1980s unchanged. But in the 80s they returned to the slant design, this time using a plastic pick-up, and they've been using it ever since.

    The pre heat should only be done with methylated spirit in the tray, usually twice. The turbo pre heat is only for when you are in freezing temperature's. Its not good for the mantle. Thats why there is a pre heat tray

    • @king.coleman

      None of the factory documentation I've found says that. Not all of them came with preheat cups and I've never had a problem with the rapid preheater damaging a mantle. Maybe mileage varies if you use poor quality mantles. I typically use Petromax mantles, but even the cheap Anchor and Butterfly mantles I've used hold up just fine long-term with use of the rapid preheater.
