Jeep XJ Build Series Ep.1 Fabricating Custom Hidden Front Bumper Recovery Points.
Hi, where can I buy Comanche rear window strips? Thank you.
Hi, do you have the materials needed to modify the left front window? Do you have a purchase link? Thank you, a fan from Taiwan.
Sorry i might have missed it - did you also do the bottom trim piece that has the rubber to seal window? worried the rubber trim at bottom wouldn't survive the paint stripper like your gloves did.
No, I didn’t paint the lower seal trim. On the ‘97 and newer XJs that trim piece is completely rubber and looks nice with just some simple cleaning. On the ‘96 and older it’s painted metal with a rubber seal for the glass. Mine were all messed up so I converted to the ‘97 and newer lower all rubber trim.
OK that was awesome! I can't wait to do it on my 93. Thank you for the video. Keep them coming. 🤙🏽
You’re welcome! Thanks! I will, I’m getting started on my next video today.
This would have been perfect if one of the previous owners of my Jeep hadn’t dumped super glue all over the trip
Oh dang, that’s unfortunate. I wonder if the paint stripper would remove super glue?
What did you do with your old windows? I need some for my Cherokee.
I still have them. What are you looking for? You can email me at wrenchestoadventures@gmail.com , so we can work out a deal if I have what your looking for.
Quality of video and your workmanship looks excellent, happy to subscribe. Could I ask if the was a reason you didn't do the vertical trim on the rear window? Someone tried to break into my XJ and damaged it. I'd like to remove it too fix it, and would renovate all the trims at the same time. Thanks for posting this.
Awesome! Thanks, for supporting my channel! So I converted to the '97 and newer windows on the front and back doors. That rear trim on the '97+ has a full rubber cover, unlike the painted metal trim on '96 and older. Check out my window conversion video from a few weeks ago, I talk about it in that one.
Turned out great. Thanks for sharing! I will eventually do this, but I know it will make my door handles and roof rack look worse and will eventually need to spray them back to fresh black too
Thanks! That is funny you said that. I was just looking at my roof rack. It needs some help! haha
I am new to the world of Cherokees, I am picking up an xj from a coworker for a mindblowing amount of the title transfer fee. It's a bone stock auto..
That’s a awesome deal for a XJ. It’s also nice to start with a bone stock one too. What do you have planned for it?
@@wrenchestoadventures ultimately I'd like 35s, f/r bumpers, winch, rear locker at the very least. Sliders. Just had a kid 7 months ago and needed a family rig. My 85 pickup burnt down and I decided it was time to turn a new leaf.
@@wrenchestoadventures also, a fire extinguisher..that is the one "MOD" nobody talks about until it's too late, I learned the hard way..
That sounds like an awesome plan. I have my XJ setup on 35’s and it’s very comfortable as a daily driver and a rock crawler. I also need to invest in fire extinguisher for mine. Like you said it’s definitely an over looked mod.
Hey there!Your content is fantastic! We have some car related items. Do you accept sponsored products?

@@wrenchestoadventures Looking forward to your reply
Just found your channel and love the content! Had a 95 XJ growing up and just brought a 93 home as my first project car. Where do you source your weatherstripping and moulding pieces?
Thanks! I’m glad you like my channel. I found someone local on Facebook marketplace selling complete doors for all the parts I needed. I also have a parts XJ that I bought for my Comanche project. But I have also found the moldings and weatherstripping at the local junkyards before too.
@@wrenchestoadventures Nice! I'll keep an eye out in my area. Came across new OEM style stuff on one site but for what they're asking seems like I could get complete doors!
I’ve also seen some “new” OEM style parts for sale on various websites. But I not willing to pay what they are asking. I paid $100 for two front doors with all that parts I needed.
Dude I want to do this !
DO IT!! Its totally worth it. For sure this is my favorite mod I've done to my XJ.
I went a little overkill, went with the 4 hole Ksuspension injectors, upgraded 42kv ignition Coil with iridium spark plugs, new wires and distributor Cap, new fuel pump, all filters, fresh oils everywhere, 2/0 wire everywhere and 160A alternator, and bigger group 34 battery, stock 3.55 Gear Ratio with 235/75R15 tires and I've got 21 mpg on highway driving conservatively
That’s awesome, now you don’t have to worry about anything for a while. 21 mpg is great! What was your mpg before all the upgrades and maintenance?
Thanks for the great information and contents!
You’re welcome! 👍🏻
4.0 is tried and true but if u need more power ; stroker kit and turbo plenty of power less issues! Lookin forward to the build content im a long time xj guy i'll be watchin thks !
I've been seriously considering putting a stroker kit on the 4.0 for the Comanche build. It all depends on what I find when I tear the engine down. It has a bad knock. I'm hoping there isn't too much internal damage.
@@wrenchestoadventures im new to the channel and really like were ur goin with it .Have u seen Newcomer raceing break horsepower record with an almost complete stock stroked/turbo 4.0 it really shows how much potential and durability these engines have 1087hp🔥 granted we wouldnt need that kind of power but this means we can make resonable hospower and plus awsome torque from a modest combo.. lots of after market stroker rebuild kits for a fraction of the cost and headache of making an LS work ..i also love and considered the LS for my built 89 xj but really learned over the years how realiable my cherokee was mainly impart cause of the jeep inline 6.. i'll be watching eather way what ever u decide it will be awsome content.. have a good one and safe travels from "Rooster"...
@@88349 Hey, I just saw your comment. Thanks for supporting the channel! It means a lot! 👍🏻 Also I think I have seen the guys videos of high hp 4.0s. It’s pretty impressive how much power they get out of them. I’d love to build a stroker 4.7. I mean who doesn’t love a LS swapped Jeep XJ.
My 97 XJ prefers Rotella, runs much smoother
I’ll have to check that brand out. I typically just use what ever is most convenient to buy locally.
@@wrenchestoadventures it's quite expensive and made by Shell but it's worth it. On my XJ, if I use any other kind of oil, it makes a clicking sound after shutting it off. With Rotella it doesn't make that sound and it sounds a bit quieter and runs smoother.
For God's sake, stand still. I felt drunk watching you bouncing around.
Thanks for the feedback. I did notice that too while I was editing the video. Looks like I have go pee haha I’ll work on that going forward.
I swapped the doors off of a 97 on to my 90 to accomplish the same goal. I then had to track down manual window regulators for a 97+ to swap in to the 97 doors. They are like hen's teeth in my area. I then had to modify the 97 doors to use the 90 door panels and mirrors. I also had to install the door catch in the jam for the 97 latch as they are different than the 96-. I did this about 10 years ago and there wasn't much information out there showing the way you did it. Watching you do this, I'm not sure which route is easier - swapping doors or swapping just the glass. I will say my route nets me an extra pair of doors with little use that have sat in my attic for 10 years. I keep telling myself I will use the old doors to make half doors, but just haven't gotten around to it. I also moved my door speakers to the dash. There is enough room behind the dash in the corners to tuck the door speakers. I fabbed up a quick bracket to hold the speakers there. This removed all of the wiring out of the doors for me. I then nipped the bottom half of the hinge off of the doors to make them easy to lift off. I don't trail ride without doors, I hate mud in my interior - but pulling the doors to do work in the jeep is great.
That's awesome! I was also debating which way was easier. I had actually bought complete doors for the 97+ swap, but then decided to just convert my 96 doors to work with the 97+ windows and trim. It sounds like you had a equal amount of work to do to convert to the 97+ doors as I had in converting to just the windows and trim. I do really like the removable doors and half doors idea. I'll for sure be making some for my Comanche. So depending on how that goes ill probably make some for my XJ too.
lol… budget… lol. Nevertheless just don’t forget about weight when you start putting a tire carrier on.. you will definitely need longer shackles ..
Budget doesn't always mean cheap haha. I'm not a fan of tire carriers. I just ratchet strap my spare down in the back.
Id do this, but DAMN do I just love the look of my Renix-style horn button....
I do really like the look of vintage XJ parts too. It’d be cool if you could somehow do the removable steering with the Renix horn button?
@@wrenchestoadventures I mean, one could probably use screws or make an adapter.
62mm throttle body, aids in improving mileage
I never thought about getting a larger throttle body. I’ll look into them. Thanks!
Nice getting ready to put our 96 on the road doing this after the fixing up is done tanks for the info Xj 4 life
You’re welcome 👍🏻 That’s awesome you have 96 too! We need to keep these old XJs on the road! Good luck with yours.
@@wrenchestoadventures we have a 94 also
I use brisk racing spark plugs. They are pricey tho.
I’m not familiar with those spark plugs, I’ll look them up
My xj has so many mods and armor, I'll never get decent fuel economy.
Yeah I’m in that same boat! The best I can do is 13.8 MPG.
Stop running wide tires! Run 10.5 or 11’s get away from the 12 plus… if anyone says you need 12’s to off road are just silly. I’ve done everting in 10.5’s… just air down. And it helps if you’re running Danna 30 or 35 rear. Run the better fuel injectors I believe come in a Neon, it has 4 holes, and insure you’re cooling. Now that I have an LS I don’t have to deal with the 4.0 anymore. I put 1.3 million miles on my 4.0.. I drove 17 hours round trip every weekend for 10 years. The biggest thing was tires! 12 inch wide tires will kill your gas…
I agree, tire size does make a big difference. But I guess there is a trade off. You can't always find a narrower tire, especially in the bigger tires 37" and larger. At that point you just have to except your MPG is going suffer. HAHA
A lift, a roof rack and the added weight of a winch and all the mods plus bigger rolling resistance because of large tires turn the XJ into a parachute going down the road
Haha yeah aerodynamics is not a trait the XJ has.
1:don’t drive it 2:don’t drive it 3:don’t drive it
That’s one way to get better MPG 😂
A colder engine will absolutely reduce fuel economy. Colder engine = colder oil = thicker oil. Thinner oil gives better fuel economy which is why cars once used 40ASE oil and many now use 0W-20... The AMC 4.0 should ideally be about 210f or somewhere between 205f and 220f....So to be clear, at 165f you are getting lower MPGs, producing less HP and probably incurring marginally more engine wear than at factory 210f temp.
Thanks for the insight. I actually did not consider the weight or temperature of the engine oil hurting the MPG. I was focused more on the way the fuel system operates. Open/ Close Loop etc. I would like to see some actual real life data on how much the oil weight/ temp affects MPG. Do you know of any good RUclips videos or web sites that could shed more light on this subject?
@@wrenchestoadventures that's not how it works. Learn more about how and when the computer runs in closed/open.
Can you explain what you mean? I have a very good understanding of how the system works.
@@wrenchestoadventures O2 sensors don't work until they warm up from exhaust heat or their internal heating element. So until they start sending a signal the engine runs in open loop. Then switches to closed loop once it sees a reliable signal coming from the sensors. The engine may also go to open loop during hard acceleration. Viscosity of engine oil effects MPG because thicker oil creates more patristic drag on the engine. It takes more energy for the rings to wipe oil from cylinder walls. A thicker oil film adds mass to reciprocating engine components. Thicker oil causes more massive droplets of oil to be flying around the engine. Which saps more power from rotating and reciprocating engine components as they strike those more massive droplets. Also thicker oil requires more H.P. to pump. All these issues may seem trivial, but they're not. If you were to double the viscosity of an engine's oil it would likely quadruple oil induced parasitic drag.
I agree with you on how the o2 sensors work in relation to open/close loop. As well as under hard acceleration it does switch back to open in order to affectively supply the max amount of fuel. Thanks for the explanation on how the oil affects the MPG. I definitely learned something about it. What you said all makes sense to me. I wish there was an easy way to test MPG at different engine and oil temperatures. I’d like to see how much it actually affects the MPG.
Love learning about our jeeps! Thanks👊🏽
Yeah no problem 👍🏻 You’re definitely going to like the next video then!
Does that blue parts XJ have a good front drive shaft? Also good video man I really need to do injectors and some heat shielding for sure to help with some heat soak for sure and some better MPG can’t hurt for sure
Yeah new fuel injectors and some heat shielding for them makes a big difference. Also I’m pretty sure the front drive shaft is good on the Blue Cherokee. Do you need one? Email me and we can talk more about it. wrenchestoadventures@gmail.com
@@wrenchestoadventures ya I need to for sure get to that soon. And ok I just sent you an email man
Champion Copper plugs are better for 4.0
I’ve never tried Champion Copper plugs. Where do you buy them at?
Buy them at Auto Zone think any Auto parts store sells them
Is that a Jk Rubicon case or TJ?
TJ Rubicon case, it’ll be going on the Comanche.
@@wrenchestoadventuressweet. I’ve been looking forever. Where did you find yours
I found locally here in Utah. It was on Facebook marketplace.
@@wrenchestoadventures what are the tags that you searched? I tried to find a couple of my area/Idaho but nothing comes up. I’m willing to travel up to six hours.
I just searched Np241j, or Rubicon Transfer case. They are super rare to find. I’ve only seen a couple. I passed one up a year ago. So when this one popped up I rushed to get it. They are pretty common on eBay.
off subject.. where did you get the hood vents?
No worries 👍🏻 I bought them off Amazon. There’s a video on my channel about them ruclips.net/video/2R04PLXDhbk/видео.htmlsi=aoovG_-xpxdBuB6c . The link to them is in the description.
I believe the nkg cooper is best for the 4.0L
I think you mean NGK Copper? I haven’t tried those in a 4.0. Do they hold up better than the Bosch plugs?
i read that about the operating temp and what temp it enters closed loop a long time ago on a thread on the NAXJA forums. the internet is completly full of crap on that issue, if you say its ok to run cooler or run anything other than a 195° thermostat you get attacked. Good to see other XJ owners just not willing to believe whatever some dingleberry posts in a FB group. nice work
Yeah it’s crazy how much misinformation is out there. There are so many key board warriors out there on FB and forums pretending like they know what they are talking about. And then attacking others if their information is challenged. Most of them don’t even know what a FSM is haha. I’m glad you liked the video!
I flushed my cooling system...new hoses, new radiator, the works. I am getting about 1.5 better mpg.
That's awesome! It just goes to show with a little maintenance on our old Jeeps they get so much better MPG. What year Jeep do you have? And how many miles are on it?
@@wrenchestoadventures I have a 98 limited 4 cylinder diesel, with 140k kilometers.
Oh cool, that’s awesome that it’s diesel!
@wrenchestoadventures yeah. Um trying to find ways to make more power. Unfortunately there is 0 aftermarket support 😞
Dang, that’d be cool to see it making more power.
No issues removing the clockspring?
Nope no issues at all removing the clock spring. It practically fell out once I got the steering wheel off.
@@wrenchestoadventureseven though mine is a 2000xj? I know the air bag light will come on.and the turn signals will return manually
From what I understand the clock spring on your 2000 XJ will be very similar to all other years of the XJ with a drivers air bag. Once you remove the air bag, steering wheel and the steering column trim, it should be as simple has unplugging it and removing it. My clock spring was just kind of floating there once the steering wheel was removed. There wasn't any screws holding the clock spring in place. I then pulled it out and unplugged it. Hope this helps.
where did u get the fuel injector harness cover? in different colors?
It was on my Jeep when I got it. I used to have a matching valve cover too. But anyways, I think I’ve seen them on the Quadratec website.
Do You have any issues with water ?
Nope, no issues yet.
Just so I’m clear the kit didn’t come with the correct length mounting screws?
You are correct. So the counter sunk screws the PRP steering wheel came with were the wrong thread pitch for the quick release adapter. And the screws that came with the adapter were too short to go through the PRP center cover and the steering wheel. There was only a couple threads of engagement with the short screws. So I went to Ace Hardware and picked up some longer ones. Maybe if a different steering wheel was used the short screws would be fine or don’t run the PRP center cover. Hope that helps!
Did you have to prime your transmission cooler before you drove? Or maybe it was just a fluid top off after driving a bit. Just curious if there was any impact to fluid levels there.
I just topped off the fluid after words. I started it up, and once it warmed up a little I checked it while it was in neutral. Then added some fluid. I’m not sure how much my cooler holds but I didn’t need to add very much. Maybe half a quart. Hope that helps!
i bought my 01 with 130k on it 10 years ago and spent under 5k on it no lockers or regear been to moab all over colorado and has been my daily as well it has 350k on it same engine and trans swapped axles from a 97 and thats a budget jeep that thing has every bell and whistle on it
That’s awesome! With a little maintenance these XJs last for ever. Your XJ sounds awesome! Did the 97 axles you swapped to have different gears and lockers?
