Can the Rapor laser scanner scan reflective object without scan spray?
Great work y use Lenovo legion
My laptop is an Asus Tuf A15 2024 model.
What is your opinion? Is it scanning better than vega? In that wireless mode
Otter even with mobile app can capture more surface data on a single frame, so it scans black and tracks much better than Vega.
thanks for the video, greetings from Russia
Привет! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I would like to compare the quality of scans on the phone and on the bridge
Scanning with wire, bridge, or mobile app gives the same result, but scanning time and tracking are different. I'll probably make a comparison video on this.
Thanks for making this. Much appreciated :)
My pleasure!
you can also use phone only via the wireless bridge, no cables needed by scanning the qr code on the wireless bridge with your phone
Yes, it can connect to the mobile app through Wifi bridge, but the scanner is only a centimeter away from the phone. Plunging in the cable is way faster.
Does the Otter work wireless with the Ferret pro wireless bridge and does Ferret work with the Otter bridge?
Otter doesn't work with Ferret's bridge. But I haven't tried the other way around. From the spec, it also should not work.
@ Thanks I have the original Ferret, which may not be the best scanner for something, but, but the things it does scan it does quite well. Even though I have three Revopoint scanners (Range, Range2, and Pop2) they are better with their single rotation than the Ferret, but the Ferret is so forgiving when lost tracking is re established, and it allows multiple rotations. The only problem with scanners, I don’t have the capabilities of scanning small objects. This is where this Otter comes in. Revo Miraco and Mini can handle this duty, but they are still appear less forgiving forgiving the Creality.
Friend! It doesn't work with my Huawei Pure 70 phone. Do you know anyone in creative? Can you pass this information on to them? I bought this bridge a month ago for a lot of money, but I still can't use it. Please pass this information on to them! Because it's just a pile of metal now.
Ok, I'll pass that to them. What scanner are you using it with? Were you connecting to a PC or mobile app?
@@Payo-TensileCreator With an otter. With a computer, everything works fine. But the application for Huawei phones is not ready. That is, with my wife's Samsung phone, everything works fine, but with my Huawei it connects to the bridge, but there is an error during scanning. I think this is due to a modified version of Android, Harmony OS
Привет, а не пробовали использовать мост от феррет? Совместно с Отто?
yes, it doesn't work with Otter
@Payo-TensileCreator спасибо
Thank you for the next great video. And sharing the quick release adapter file 🙏🏼
No problem 👍
I already purchased the wifi bridge. I wish i knew it will work with the phone.
I get about 4 fps on my Pixel 4. At that speed, the scan will take 4x longer than a laptop and more easily lose tracking
I just got the bridge too, and was gutted to see this. However, I just tried connecting the scanner directly to an iPhone 13 via a cable and nothing happened. Maybe you need a better cable than the standard iPhone cable to do this? I've been using the bridge and CR scan app to scan directly with the iPhone and it's great. It's a little bit slower than with my PC (i5 12400f, RTX 2060 Super) but not really by much. Quick enough that you can move around without having to be super careful about losing tracking or anything like that. I couldn't see the FPS value reported while scanning though, so can't say exactly how it's performing. I've used it to scan the engine bay of my project car yesterday in large object, hi-quality, geometry mode and was really impressed. I then transferred it all back to the PC wirelessly and processed it there. TL:DR I couldn't connect an iPhone 13 directly to the scanner with a cable, but it works really well with the WiFi bridge Edit: Just watched the rest of the video and the performance I get scanning with the Bridge and iPhone 13 directly is very similar to the performance Payo gets using the Wifi Bridge linked to his laptop. 6:20 in the video
@@Waffle4569 you can use the money you would pay on the wifi bridge to get a better phone :)
@@Waffle4569 If your PC is connected to wired ethernet and you have good WiFi coverage for your phone, you can also use it like that. This way you don't degrade the WiFi link between the bridge and the PC as much which makes scanning a lot easier. The actual bandwidth sent over WiFi isn't that much (50 - 120 Mbps max on my Raptor), but the latency is important for tracking. So having the mobile also connected to the same WiFi will seriously harm this latency. Or use a decent laptop which you can drag along while scanning. Just keep in mind to have the laptop powered while scanning or else you will see a significant decrease in framerate and/or it will fluctuate. Problem is that the laptop used for scanning needs to be quite beefy in specs, which will probably cost you 1000 - 1500 euro at least. I have no idea if any GPU other than NVidia will work. At least the intel GPU in my i5 (4 years old) and i7 laptop (6 years old) only can deliver 5 - 8 fps which is too low to be usable. There are some nice laptops available with those new Intel GPU's, but since the Creality QA specifically mentions NVidia GPU's I would make sure to use that one.
Creality said they'll try to make Otter run faster than 15 FPS over bridge Wifi on PC. Now, the current scanning speed is very close to the mobile app over the USB C cable.
I didn't know I could use it wirelessly! This is fantastic. Thanks Payo.
The Wifi Bridge (the handle) is brand new, I can't find it anywhere else except Crealitys own store. When it comes more available around here in Europe, this is pretty much a must have, because I use my desktop for scanning with the Otter, and can't carry it around scanning cars and such :D Wifi6 from the bridge makes everything that much easier...
Otter is absolutely enough for reverse engineering but you need to get control measurements for the parts that require tide fit. Either way for press fits neither of the scanners is good and will require control measurements.
You should do a comparison with einstar or einstar vega, creality vs einstar. Nobody has done it before, and believe me, so many people are looking for that, including myself😊
I've made 4 videos comparing Enistar Vega vs Otter, Shining 3D took back the scanner before I finish the test and they're not sending me the Einstar to review anymore.
😂😂😂
Looks like otter is a much better option
Your videos are defiantly the best on the world wide web. Love your work and I hotly anticipate your next instalment.
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate the support!
Thank you, now i can't await my raptor to arrive. I watch the status page every day 5 times. Still no change after 1.5 weeks.... Feel like a small child waiting for christmas again 😂
I have a gift already purchased of the Otter. I look at the Raptor laser scan and the accuracy it produces is clear to me. I have difficulty with thinking I'm settling with the worse scanner. Plan to scan engine parts and build on them.
I made a comparison video on accuracy here, please check it out see what fits you. ruclips.net/video/CWHiHhJlvGI/видео.html
This is amazing! It’s always great to see such high-quality content from our users.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video.
I don't understand how skfb can do prints so cheaply.
Why didn't you import an stl of the scan into your cad program?
I only use point cloud in CAD. CAD is not made to deal with millions of polygonal like 3DsMax, Blender, Maya. Putting 3-4 million faces in CAD will tank its performance, make it hard to orbit, zoom, pan. Meshes also have edges that will block view and more difficult to see through. Most importantly, scanner software apply smootness when mesh and you will loose the accuracy.
@@Payo-TensileCreator I had no issue opening your obj helmet scan in Rhino. You should be using a nurbs modeler for reverse engineering not a mesh modeler.
@stratostear Rhino is not CAD, it's surface modeling software. CAD's made for creating solid, some has ability to do suface modeling but it's not as good as Rhino. The helmet file is less than 2 million polygon, it's a small file, sub 100 MB.
@Payo what software do you use to measure the dimensions of the scans?
A freeware called "CloudCompare" Many professional scanner software built on CloudCompare foundation. The UI might look obsolete but you can do a lot with it, merging the un mergable, meshing, align to plane ect.
ASA filament I recommend for outside use.
Here it's twice the price of ABS, but I'll try it out.
Exellent video!
I can confirm your results i got a average error (=offset on true measurement that is systematic) of 0.007mm, with a standard deviation of 0.060mm. the average error i get is 0.05 over 1200 measurements on 10 points of the califlower model. Scanned 4 times with 3 times measuring the same point digitally) my source of truth is a calibrated caliper
I ordered calibration rods but it got lost in the mail. See if I will get them and I will do re-test
I'm also looking into calibration rods. I don't know how to use them yet, and how to get cheap ones. Do you buy them with a calibration certificate? Or do you need to send them to a calibration company? Also SW to use to check calibration (cheap) would be interesting. Hope i'm not giving you too much work!😅 Really appreciate you helping, thanks
Bravo! Your in-depth review has helped me make my decision whether to upgrade from the Raptor to the Raptor x. I work in the car world designing parts that eventually become carbon fiber pieces. I mainly work in 7 lines. With the performance being the same, and with the roughness of the 34 laser, I believe I will be keeping the original Raptor. I may buy the WiFi bridge handle but since I will still need the computer and all its cables nearby that for me currently is not a must. I will wait for a complete upgrade in a future scanner from the company. Thank you for doing your testing!
I have bought the Raptor bridge for the Raptor (non-X version) and I have to say it is really an improvement in handling. Using a rather powerful laptop (Lenovo Legion Slim 5 16ARP9) I manage to get about 40 fps with the Raptor. But now it is way more practical and don't have to worry about the cable and it is a lot easier to hold the scanner as the grip is way more natural. For calibration you still need to use the cable, but for normal operations you don't need to anymore. I don't find phone holder really practical. At least not with the Pixel 7a, due to the position of the buttons.
@ Irony I am also using a Lenovo, a Legion i7 with a 4080 and I getting 50 fps wired (weird that I am not getting 60 fps), but I will give the bridge a try in a few months.
@@brettturnage533 Yep wired I also get 50 fps. Since you have a similar (the same?) model, can you also test to see if putting the laptop in 'high speed mode' actually lowers the reported framerate in IR scan in the 'performance test' ? Mine showed about half the framerate in IR mode in this test when I put it to performance mode. (both with power connected of course)
50 FPS is the fastest you will get from Raptor. My desktop 14900K with RTX 4090 will only go 50 FPS max and I haven't seen anyone go beyond that. Otter in large mode will require most computing power, only this desktop can go 30 FPS without dropping.
@ That’s what I was assuming despite Creality saying 60 fps was possible. I assume that is the same for the RaptorX?
Thank you very much for this review!
Thanks for this new video. Ok Raptorx it's a lot more precise than Otter ....but Otter remain a great scanner for the price imho
Wow, the increase in scan area is insane. Ive read people saying only difference between the x and non x is the speed that they pick up the data, how wrong were they.
Cross lines spacing wider than parallel lines, so it pickup surface data faster when the object has wider faces, but when the object has smaller faces like the angle block in the video, the parallel lines pick up surface much quicker (I think 30 - 40 % faster)
awesome 👏
Thanks ✌️
Another great video Payo, thank you!
You're welcome!
Isn't it possible to combine multiple scans to get around the frame limit?
Yes, you can merge multiple scans. This video was made months ago, now the frame limit has been removed. I don't see that message in a while.
Could yo explain what is the goel on changing the Brightness / IR Exposure ..... so the markers have to get the color red or not ?
Laser brightness: If it's too dark, it would take longer time to catch up surface, if it's too bright, the surface will be rougher, kind of orange peel. IR exposure is for the markers, too dim, it won't see the markers and be able to track. Most of the time I'll leave it to auto.
@@Payo-TensileCreator thank you very much... you got a new subscriber ;)
Still the best channel for scanner comparisons. No screaming, zero fluff. Pure information. Keep on the good work!
Thanks, will do!
I wanted to buy Raptor but than Metro X came from Revopoint. Which one to choose?
I never try Metro X, so I can't give you any advice. But Revopoint told me they will send me a testing unit soon.
When you moved the item to Blender and set the origin on the x y z access.. How do you set it up to be able to use the symmetry on the x axis in sculpt mode? In the video you filled in each eye separately. I scanned an item, moved it into blender and having an issue getting the symmetry the same on both sides. Appreciate any help. Great video
I'd set origin to center of mass (Volume) Then I will delete half of the fish then mirror it and re-mesh. This time left-right is symmetry and you can turn on symmetry on in sculpting menu.
I asked you a couple of months ago if you would get the wireless handle. You said there was too much Wifi around you and, it would cause to much interference to be viable. I am super happy to see that was not the case. Theres always lots of slightly different channels in Wifi 6, that can play nice together given enough space between them. A bit like bitcoin divisions.
Creality updated bridge Wi-Fi firmware many times in the past months. Now Ferret`s bridge Wi-Fi works much better, before it would be very lagging. I still have stutter sometime with Raptor/Otter bridge Wi-Fi, the houses here are only 5 meters apart, it's very congested.
@@Payo-TensileCreator Possibly the broadcast distance can be dialed back, so there will be room for more connections. Then again 5-6G works on less penetration distance.
They need to use a 60amp controller the controller it comes with can't handle the current so it causes it to go out it's pointless to not be able to full throttle more than twice if the controller can't handle it happened to me 2x on my rs I was pushing it one day and it went out while I was out I had to uber home the controller got hot and burned out due to the power and current being distributed to the controllers
Mine broke after I was accelerated up the bridge. I was in the fast lane, lost power, and I had to kick scoot it to the side. I almost got hit by cars. The replacement controller will probably break again. Inmotion released FW update for controller a few days ago. I hope it will fix this.
How did you delete all the markers from the scan of a car?
If I use marker stickers, the software will remove them, and no trace can be seen. But if I use the magnetic one like in the video. I have to select with rectangle tool and delete it one by one. The software can patch up the cuts when meshing.
Thank you for the honest comparison. We at the 3D scanning community value your tests since they look the most unbiased and professional at the same time. A hint: Otter is just a face scanning prince. A face scanning king is... Otter in small mode. Tested personally
Your welcome
Thanks for the video. I'm now using Otter with Bridge. Is it worth the upgrade for car body scanning? Seems a lot better. Could you tell us more about it?
I'll do more tests with a car body scan. It seems like it's made for this. As sharp as 7 lines, but larger capture range, lesser marker require for an area.
@@Payo-TensileCreator Thanks. I agree with you that the bridge is highly recommended but I'm waiting for an upgrade of the software functionality with more controls from the phone.
Excellent video! Looking forward to see more ReaptorX scanning videos. When scanning object in two parts, top and bottom seperately. I always have quite strong seamline at the border of each single scan. For me this is a sw bug. How do you deal with this?
To reduce the burrs, I'd try to scan the connecting edge as much as I can. If the burrs still there I'd trim it out (if I can) before merging.
As always very informative, thank you. I also received the bridge for the Raptor (pre-order) About the phone clamp, it is not very usable on a Pixel 7a as you need to position the phone off-center or else the clamp will press on the buttons. I only managed to use the screen-sharing via the QR-code scan and was not able to connect using the app. However I did not connect my phone to the same access point of the bridge, but rather have my phone connected to my wireless network and the PC also connected to LAN. On my laptop (Lenovo Legion Slim 5 16ARP9), I managed to get about 40 fps while scanning using the bridge. I did not use the USB WiFi6 adapter on the laptop. The bridge makes scanning a lot easier and is IMHO worth the money. (at least for the pre-order price) The driver included on the USB WiFi6 stick cannot complete its setup, as it gives "out of memory" errors on my PC with 96 GB of RAM. Creality servicedesk did email me a different installer which could be installed. I had not seen this option where you could pre-scan the markers and select an area to scan with different settings. Is this a Raptor-X only feature? I will for sure look for it when I'm back home as it really seems like a very useful feature. Edit: I just checked and I did not have the 3.3.13 build installed on my PC, which seems to add these new features. In your video you mention (@4:20 ) there is a 3.3.14, but I cannot find it on the Creality site nor in the release notes. Do you have some test version?
I typed it wrong, the latest 29 NOV is 3.3.13
Could you post the helmet scans without post processing?
Upload link in the description. None of the scan in this video is processed, convert to OBJ right out of the scanning software.
Great video, and looking forward to the casting.
It could be in a week or two.
Thanks for making a video of the WiFi bridge handle! I would like to make my own WiFi bridge for my Otter, as the price of the unit is too high. Is it possible you could do a teardown of the handle to see the components on board, and perhaps a port scan of the gateway while connected to the handle WiFi? I imagine the SoC is going to be a fairly common one found on travel-sized WiFi 6 routers w/ USB 3.0 connection. The most important thing to know is how the unit communicates with the software, and how it talks to the scanners via USB. Thank you!
I don't think I can open it up for you, as I might have to return it. But I know that the software does handshake with the handle, it might be hard to make it work together. I've a Ferret bridge Wi-Fi, I can tear that one down if you like.
A teardown of the other bridge would be beneficial too. I would expect the handshaking to be similar, perhaps the hardware too. Does the ferret bridge work with Otter? @@Payo-TensileCreator
Thanks! Questions: 1) can the raptor / raptorx be used to scan without computer? From this video it looks like the phone only serves as a extra screen , not realy a capture device 2) the tracking on the back of the car looks great xith raptor x. The markers seem to be +/-10cm appart, if i do that with raptor i cannot get good tracking. That would be a good test for tracking, plce the tracking markers further and further away from eachother, and see when the different devices can no longer track
1) No, it can't work without PC, it uses GPU for tracking and CPU for processing point cloud. 2) Yes, I can do marker dots requirement for each scanning mode.
I wasn't prepared for it to be $3,300 on Black-Friday Seems a bit steep even with the included $450 wireless system (Raptor being $1,200 + 450 = $1,650 with the handle) I'm glad you were able to get your hands on one!
The Raptor is likely to benefit more from the WiFi bridge than the Otter. The Raptor requires a 12V power supply, which means extensive cabling and the need for an additional outlet for the AC adapter. In contrast, the Otter only requires a single USB-C cable.
@ I ended up buying an Otter after watching this video. I’ve been following you along for a while now, great content. $715 direct from creality. With the RaptorX it seems like there’s another round of improvements they can make on the blue light system over the standard Raptor that I don’t want to pay for only to be improved upon for potentially a cheaper price relatively soon. Wifi 6 should be integrated into the device and not an additional $450 on a $1,200-3,000 unit I want to use a device for reverse engineering though and that’s one of my only real options for sharper edge accuracy. I’m going to start with larger scale models like full vehicle scanning (multiple scans) and limbs/torso scanning for now. I did not have confidence in making a decision without your content, thanks for that!
