Glorious Failure: The Hunt for a Lake District Char
January for me visiting, can i ask if any poisonous snakes or spiders on site
We didn't see any snakes at all, but they are present. The lodge staff are very safety conscious - they keep a careful eye open and remove snakes to a safe place, if they get too close to the accommodation. There is an introductory talk on arrival day, during which you will be advised what to do in the event of spotting a snake. There was no mention of poisonous spiders, so I presume they are not an issue.
Marvellous video, brought back fantastic memories of our holiday at Rhino lodge in July 2024, thankyou for taking the time to produce,
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video
28 days then i be there.
Loved this and looking forward to our visit there in a few months ..thanks for posting
A great video David, brings back some lovely memories. Hope you're well
Love these style videos David. There aren’t enough on butterflies on RUclips. Thanks for sharing 😊👍
Many thanks Joel - it's just a shame about the wooden narration!
As we are booked to go here, this time next year, found this video to be a great introduction to what we possibly may see, can you say what video equipment and lense combination you where using ? As a keen photographer I am looking at what to pack in my camera bag and what I may have to obtain prior to flying out! Cheers
Just a Canon Legria HF R506 camcorder, which set me back a tad over £200 when I bought it 10 years ago, and for the stills, a Canon SX60 HS bridge camera. I'm sure you'll love Sebatana. When you are not out in the jeeps, it's well worth wandering around the gardens , especially if you are interested in the birds, butterflies, lizards etc. - you never know what you will see.
I bet you watch Greg Baker
Never heard of him, to be honest!
That wasnt a trout it was a baby atlantic salmon at 4.13 <-- the 'thumb prints' are the giveaway with the red spots. A trout at 5.50 for sure.
I'm not sure how adult salmon would reach Goat's Water to spawn. The only access is by a tiny stream, narrow enough to step across, which tumbles down a steep hillside towards Coniston Water. Apart from which, my information is that thumb prints can be evident in both small trout and salmon parr.
@@davidtipping1370 alot of eggs are carried by birds, they stick to their legs so it could be a one off, but it is definately a baby salmon (a parr). Actually baby arctic char also have the thumb print on the side - www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=tvX8a%2fQI&id=1A3C86BCD3491BB0C91973303B6E638FDF64EC51&thid=OIP.tvX8a_QI7Pf1g7Hm9RVgjwHaFj&mediaurl=https%3a%2f%2fwww.aquaculturealliance.org%2fwp-content%2fuploads%2f2021%2f04%2fOLK-Pic-1_1500-960x720.jpg&cdnurl=https%3a%2f%2fth.bing.com%2fth%2fid%2fR.b6f5fc6bf408ecf7f583b1e6f515608f%3frik%3dUexk349jbjswcw%26pid%3dImgRaw%26r%3d0&exph=720&expw=960&q=baby+arctic+char+par&simid=608039736230361914&FORM=IRPRST&ck=BD0EA77B12DB96A99401E5E44759AF76&selectedIndex=36&itb=0&ajaxhist=0&ajaxserp=0
@@davidtipping1370 eggs get stuck to birds legs they are sticky so it could have been introduced as an egg by a bird. Salmon of course are incredible animals but there wouldnt just be one or two if it was a regular breeding area. Arctic char also do have the thumb print on their side as babies but this one is definiately a parr (baby salmon) IMO. <-- lol.
definetly not a salmon parr mate it's a high tarn, salmon bury their eggs after fertilisation so no way would a bird have brought it plus plenty of brown trout have thumbprints Salmon parr always have a very distinct forked tail which that little trout did not
Excellent Dave .! But so few views !?! This country IS finished !!
Nice video. I met you fishing for bream on a large gravel pit near Harrogate in the early 90s.
Yes, I remember Alex. I recall that we both had 9-pounders one night.
@@davidtipping1370 yes we both caught one. I hope u are well. I heard of 1 getting caught last year so there's still a few in!
That looks like a fantastic trip and an interesting selection of species caught, David. The Linder 440 would stand you in good stead on those waters.
Thanks Drew. Yes, a great trip. All that was missing was a burbot.
Im very pleased to see you've produced another film, David Your Swedish trip looked superb, especially the whitefish. I'm not sure why you've closed your latest films off to comments.
Neither am I - I didn't realize it had happened until I read this! I'm a bit of a technophobe but I'll see if I can fix it. Thanks for letting me know. *Sorted now, I hope.
How the hell do char get into those mountain tarns.?
They've been there since the end of the Ice Age, probably the descendants of sea-run fish which ascended rivers and streams to spawn.
A lovely insight into a place I can't wait to visit. And a monarch butterfly in a city, with cats and canaries - that is the dream :-D Thank you XX
Thanks Laura and enjoy your visit!
I thought I was watching National Geographic for a moment. Thank you for this great video
Many thanks for the compliment Mohammed. All done with a £200 camcorder and free-to-download editing software!
Bird at 15:45 is a Tennessee Warbler!
Thanks Steven. I've had the identity confirmed by other sources since the video was made.
Cool! Thanks for the video. My wife and I are headed down there for our honeymoon in January! Hope to see many of the wonderful species you featured.
why did you not kill that terrible chark
Great video take’s me back to when I fished Ripley beck
I fished Ripley Beck myself - used to enjoy catching chub in the little weir pool directly below the lakes, until I got kicked off for poaching!
@@davidtipping1370 I lived in the village for many years so l fish the beck only down as far as the railway line kept me out of trouble in the school holidays
Been fishing crimple recently had some cracking chublet n trout
Hi David, where about sis this?
Crimple Beck, a tributary of the River Nidd.
Tranquility itself. Perfect.
Thank you.
Doine has a good spot for char all year round, you are casting into into inky depths from a shingle spit at the far end where the burn is
Thanks for the tip, I'll have a try there when I'm next in the locality, hopefully some time this year.
@@davidtipping1370 no worries. Been fishing Scottish lochs for 40 years. I’m a native 😂
Get him!!!!!!
Excellent, apart from your pronunciation of Funchal.
Thanks. That's the Yorkshire pronunciation, by the way!
Many years since my wife and I spent a wonderful two weeks there recording the birds and other wildlife, a wonderful experience, John and Penny Hale
It's 5 years to the day since we were there. A fabulous country and we hope to return!
Really excellent series of videos. Being Scottish, I'm especially interested in the ones you've done up here. Good choice of venues. In the early 80's, a pal of mine caught a very large trout during a club outing at the same loch caught your cairngorm char. He's been dining out on it ever since. I've seen the photo so often, it's permanently imprinted in my mind.
Yes, we were aware the loch has a reputation for ferox. Martin spent some time fishing a deadbait, but unfortunately it drew no response on this occasion. Glad you enjoyed the videos.
Great video, thanks for uploading
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Can You send me post code for this place? I live in Hull
The video was made over several days in different places, but mainly at Aldbrough, HU11 4SA, and Dimlington, HU12 0SU. Anywhere on the Holderness can produce similar results, but its' all on the day - sometimes the fish are there, sometimes they ain't!
@@davidtipping1370 thanks Bro I will try should be next weekend 😉
Beautiful place to fish.. lovely video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
Definitely caught the magic of crucian fishing.
Thank you.
Brilliantly put together and great camera work. Excellent knowledge of the wildlife and beautiful area around there. 10/10
Thank you very much!
Fantastic video I fish these regular, you were unlucky not to catch a powan or two from loch lubnaig its well known for them.
You mean char, I presume? We returned to Lubnaig a year later and caught a few, but went back again last year (2020) and could only catch trout and perch. I have a theory that char move around these big lochs in shoals, and you need to be in the right area at the right time.
@@davidtipping1370 ,yes sorry char,,, loch eck in argyle is the loch with powan in,, loch lubhair just by crainlarich is a fantastic loch for char.👍.
Had my biggest perch under those boats 2.9 lb 💪👍 I love Lomond
Errgghhh... I keep trying to watch this, but "Crooseeans" is like nails down a blackboard to me. It's "Crooshans"..!
Step you silent, fish can hear and fish can see you sports man be xxx
Great detail Dave, I love to read your books and your natural history approach is very refreshing. You should be on T.V. Dave, you would make a great ambassador for angling.
Thanks Bill. If you can persuade anybody at the BBC, I'm open to offers! Hope you are enjoying your retirement.
Another great video Dave, I love the way you give your lifelong perspective on the subject, it shows great depth of understanding, so refreshing in the new world of instant experts.
I’ve seen hundreds of videos on Madeira, and this is one of the best, IMO.
It is very nice of you to say so - thanks.
@@davidtipping1370 I am hoping to possibly move to Madeira. Looks like the bird watching is at least decent.
What's the name of the boat
Force Ten, skipper Pete Davies. Highly recommended.
The purest form of fishing, tench on the float. Not sure I’d wear a shirt 👔 to go fishing though 😂😂😂
Simplicity at its best.
Outstanding!
Thank you!
Great video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful place, also fish
Yes, a lovely pool. Thanks for watching.
Fished this lake many times 40 years ago, it hasn't changed at all a magical place.
Hi Jon, hope you don't mind me asking where this is? (I will delete comment after). Me and a close friend have been looking for something like this forever but have struggled. We will certainly keep it too ourselves if you disclosed the location... Thanks Ryan
Hi , I have just found your channel and really enjoyed the videos ! Thanks for taking the time to complete them !. I read one of your books a while ago and will have to get a copy of the new one . Thanks again !
Thanks Dave.
Where in Yorkshire is this plz ??
Crimple Beck, Harrogate.
Very nice video, interesting to see the birds etc in Costa Rica
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
