EVs - Just Get Hybrids Instead?
In today's video I discuss whether hybrids are an alternative to BEVs, and thus the ZEV mandate is misplaced.
This is a response to a video by Harry Metcalfe and released on the Harry's Garage channel. In that video Harry airs his thoughts on the subject of the ZEV mandate, and proposes that we all have hybrids instead of EVs. Can a world fleet of hybrids be fuelled by sustainable fuels, such as biofuel or e-fuels?
This is the latest in a series of videos sharing my knowledge and experience with electric cars. EVs have improved immensely over the last few years, and we are at a point where I think the majority of people can make the switch to electric.

    Putting the boot in on the stop gap idea of hybrid vehicles. They just aren’t the future for everyone. Hyper cars, possibly shipping? Even so EV technology and renewable technologies are in a steep upward trajectory of development, so in less than a decade the hybrid vehicle solution will be a blip on the history of cleaner vehicles. Thanks for another great video!

    So , I get it , you are an absolutist, the solution has to be entirely zero emission. Also you have a 2050 target date fixed in your world view. The problem is the world is in no position to achieve anything like those challenges. However there are going to be produced between now and 2050 a ballpark number of batteries. I think the world would benefit most from the maximum carbon emission reduction from those limited number of batteries. So the first use should be in the electrical grid to store and distribute power from renewables so we don't spend millions of taxpayer money paying for curtailment fees. Also the percentage of renewables in the grid can rise as we store more energy for later use. So hybrids give the battery allocation, carbon reduction, if batteries are limited. Finally hybrids can be subsidy free as the addition cost is trivial compared to a non-hybrid and there is no charger network required for remote locations.

    Even if you could generate "clean" fuels, they're a terrible idea. Combustion creates pollution. And you lose a huge benefit of EVs - simplicity. Fewer components means fewer repairs and less maintenance. This is why automakers would love to sell more hybrids. My fist gasoline vehicle (back in the 80s) had barely 200 miles of range and i lived in a rural area.So anyone claiming they can't get by with less than 500 miles is full of shit.

      Their complaint now is if they were in the same position now that you were back then, is that their refueling if done at a public rapid / ultra rapid chargerpoint and they didn't want to refuel whilst doing something else they were going to do anyway ( eg grocery shop ) is that that it would take away another 30 to 40 minutes of their time per refuel session eg once per fortnight.

    USA - Automakers are pushing plug-in hybrids because they put in 1/5 of the battery of an b e v overprice them and consumers get the rebates. The Prius Prime is $34k, it's cute and has big wheels and expensive tires and a pathetic 44 MI EV range at an EV price. Don't worry your pretty little head about plugging in or getting a charger, that's only for smart people.

    Oh, yes, it makes *so* much sense to buy a hybrid rather than an EV. You get the joy of a car with four times the complication (ten times the moving parts including an engine, a fuel system, a cooling system, lots of belts and hoses, a transmission, a differential, and complicated electronics blending your battery and electric motor with the gasoline powertrain), and at a minimum four times the maintenance expense. All so you can sleep at night knowing that you can add more polluting gasoline to the car at any corner gasoline station instead of the hassle of spending 15 seconds to plug it in inside your garage. Range? Most EVs will go further on a charge than my mainline Honda CR-V will go on a tank of gas. YMMV - 95% of my driving is on congested cobblestone roads within five miles of my house, a pattern not conducive to good fuel economy. In all fairness, an EV with only 50 miles of range would be adequate to serve my needs. _"Yeah, but when you have to replace the battery, it'll cost you tens of thousands of dollars."_ Tesla, for example, warranties their batteries for 10 years and 120,000 miles. That doesn't mean the battery has failed utterly. It means that it has less than 70% of its original range on one charge. In my circumstances, even 20% remaining range would be sufficient for my needs, and there are more and more places that can repair a degraded battery for a fraction of the cost of a new one. In any case, my next birth date will have an eight at the begging of it, I probably won't still be driving by the time I can wear out a battery. My next car, planned for less than a year from now will be a used EV with FSD. I can't wait.

    Even if we did have a perfect way to make billions of tons of liquid hydrocarbons from thin air for free, it would still be better to put those hydrocarbons underground (creating negative emissions) and drive EVs. That would be a far more efficient use of energy and it would reduce air pollution.

    Unfortunately, pure EV sucks for apartment dwellers who don't have a garage they can plug-in to trickle charge while they sleep. Every vehicle should be a minimum of HV to get the benefits of regenerative breaking and also the brakes last 200k miles. The hybrid motor replaces two cylinders in the gas engine, which also helps the engine burn less gas and weigh less. I love having a PHEV because it can trickle charge overnight and I use gas only for long trips

    • @robinbennett5994
      @robinbennett5994 20 часов назад

      Installing chargers in apartment parking lots is a far simpler and cheaper solution than building hybrids. When EV adoption gets high enough, town councils encourage (and then force) landlords to do it.

  • @PancakePutin
    @PancakePutin День назад

    Technically, the only solution is better public transportation. As I currently live in an apartment with no way to charge any electric vehicles and no charging stations within 150km, I have no option but to own an ICE car. As I only use my car for rare trips to specialty stores and long work related trips, 700 to 900km, an EV is not economically viable for me. In summary, EV's have a place in this world, but they are not for possible everyone. Hybrids also have a niche use, but with neighborhoods, shopping districts, and commercial districts all becoming further apart, I believe that cars are not the main problem and that there are more deep rooted problems that should be fixed first. Let's just ignore the fact that many forms of transportation could easily be made fully electric, such as cargo rail in north america, which exclusively uses diesel with no overhead power lines. I don't have the solution to the world's problems, but I personally don't think EV's should be the first priority to fix the world's problems with regards to fuel.

I looked at my daily usage of cars in the previous year, the number of long journeys, the frequency of use and the availability of charging. WIth home charging available , a fairly set routine of journeys under 100 miles and a helpful calculator on costs, I went full BEV. Now 10 years and 150k miles later I know I made the right decision. Ignoring the environmental aspects, the cost saving have been large, large enough to offset the 'depreciation' that all cars undergo. @@theelectrictransition My advice , and it applies to all cars, is before buying set out on paper your needs. Look at you last two+ years car useage, how many 'long' journeys do you really do. I find that most people only go more than 100 miles on holiday. When I brought my first EV the dealers had a scheme whereby I could at short notice borrow an ICE car for several days for a long trip. This lessened my range anxiety, I borrowed an ICE three times in the first two years, each time for an unexpected Funeral 240 miles away from home. I was also able to have a 2nd charger installed at my mother in laws house which was at near max range, making weekly visits possible as we did her shopping. When I started to drive EV there was one rapid charger some 6 miles from my home, now there are close to twenty within 10 miles. The last funeral I went to, 240 miles away is within range of my current EV. I haven't needed an ICE for over seven years. My advice still is, look at your real needs, write them down, think about your reality. Then buy the car you need not what some motoring Petrol head journalist says.

    My son has a plug in hybrid and has to charge every night just to get 27miles then still needs to fuel his car at a garage, then they are the cost of servicing and driving around with a heavy set of batteries and electric motor when his 27 miles is used up. So I my opinion on hybrids is it a money making scenario for the motor company that has not embraced full EV cars.

      Don't forget, on a hybrid you stretch the battery to the limits much more than a big battery on an EV. This way you destroy it much faster. I have a colleague that charges every day to 100% and lets it die while he drives back home. His journey is 40 miles and the battery is enough for 30. I told him that he will see the battery degrade day after day and he needs to replace the battery in 3-5 years. He said it will still be in warranty and he doesnt care.

      @@MrKOenigma Running cold a lot!!!! That was one of the reasons that I scraped my old Octavia TDi. i work nights and I had to idle-warm it for at least 15 minutes to have clean windows twice every day. My next door neighbour has respiratory problems and I had to move it from my driveway to the road wait for these 15 minutes to make 10 miles. The engine could never get in the optimum temp and that caused to get condensation in the oil that destroyed the turbo. I had to pay almost £6-8k to replace turbo, intercooler, fuel injectors and a used gearbox (Auto DSG, didn't want to shift when it was cold) to get it at the condition I wanted it. I gave that money as a deposit for my used i3 and now I have a nicer car that waits for me every evening and every morning with clean windows and at perfect temp. It costs me 2p/mile, £100/year when the diesel needed about £70-80 every month just to go to work.

    Having driven a Zoe for 4 years find it annoying that drives of ice cars take so long to get started at traffic lights. In a EV I can be 30 or 40 metres up the road before the ice car behind me has managed to release their clutch and start moving. If I am behind a couple of ice cars I keep wondering if they have broken down because they take so long to start moving.

    The mandate is a bit of a hammer. EVs are already cheaper to build than ICE. EV costs are only going in one direction which is down, so just leave it to the market to decide. Also build out public charging at a sensible price. By sensible no more than 2x home electric price.

    • @theelectrictransition

      It could be a hammer, yes. However, the sheer amount of misinformation we have seen recently suggests that someone, somewhere, is trying to skew the market to their own benefit. Having some targets can help give the new tech a chance against the fightback from the old guard

    Preregistrations cause the spikes I would suggest - due to dealers reaching their financial year ends or to artificially hit government annual targets. EVs may be selling, but many manufacturers are losing thousands of pounds on every one they sell - this is not sustainable. Also, leasing/finance companies are now seeing vehicles reaching the end of contract with a residual value far below what was predicted - no doubt insolvencies will follow and lease rates will go through the roof. BTW I notice you change the scale when you switch from the ICE graph to the EV chart to make the EV growth look bigger - oldest trick in the book.

    • @jimthain8777
      @jimthain8777 6 дней назад

      SOME manufacturers are losing money on their products, others are making profits. The vehicle industry has always been this way. Many of those manufacturers are aware of the fact that if they could lift their BEV sales a few percentage points they would move from losing money to making money. This is the power of manufacturing at scale. So far most BEV manufacturers are not YET manufacturing at scale. The question becomes how many of them will still be around when sales drastically increase, and they make scale?

    • @theelectrictransition
      @theelectrictransition 4 дня назад

      I've been checking the preregistration declarations from SMMT - manufacturers are required to declare them these days - and these spikes don't appear in that data. That was my first guess, but no, there's another reason. Yes, there will definitely be winners and losers in the transition, as in any transition. I don't like that companies might go out of business, but it's a harsh reality in any sector. A number of manufacturers failed to read the signs early enough, starting their transformation late. They made their choices, and if it doesn't work out for them, the board will have to take responsibility for their decisions. I think you see a conspiracy in the presentation of the graphs that isn't there. You are absolutely right, they ARE on very different scales. That's because tools like Excel and LibreOffice Calc autoscale, rather than a choice I actively made. I didn't try to relate the data on the two graphs, though, and all of the types appeared on the first graph at the same scale. I didn't think about the scales. that's true. However, I'm glad the autoscale happened, because it allowed me to see the detail of what was happening with hybrid sales, which isn't all that obvious on the original graph showing all of the types together. Growth is slow, but it is there. However, it is easiest to see by zooming in.

      @theelectrictransition 4 дня назад

      Offset tradung only applies for 3 years, and the cap on how much offsetting is allowed reduces quickly. I don't mind it myself, for two reasons. Firstly, it helps achieve CO2 emissions reductions, which is one of the goals of the transition. Secondly, I like that manufacturers have a bit of flexibility in the early years. The point is to encourage the transition, rather than to make money through fines. Not every manufacturer will achieve it through EV sales alone, as they started late. They will already be punished for that by lower sales of less good cars as they learn the ropes, so I would prefer they didn't also get a financial penalty due to a mandate that was only finalised a couple of months before it was introduced.

    • @theelectrictransition
      @theelectrictransition 22 часа назад

      Yeah, that's an interesting thought. It looks like that is not as easy as it used to be, as there are regulations involved. Preregistrations need to be declared and are reported by the SMMT, and a demonstrator has to be on the books for a minimum of 6 months. However, I would never underestimate the ability of the motor trade to work the system to their benefit! I expect some companies will be finding loopholes somewhere, somehow
