      An unstable/overheated GoPro that hangs up is useless for diving. A new heat sink won't do anything in a plastic underwater housing. And it's still the same processor and sensor (3 years OLD same as in gp10! ). As divers we should especially be sensitive to unreliable equipment.... Especially with the new DJI Osmo 5, not only does it work steadily, but it performs much better in poorer lighting conditions and has a greater tonal range and has battery for 4h.. Coming new Ace pro 2 may be interesting too, buy GoPro is garbage. And who uses colore filters these days ? They cut the light, making the whole image darker, and combined with the smaller sensor GoPro additionally spoils the image ? Isn't it better to improve the colors in post editing ? Blake, interesting topic. This topic taught in Open water classes by ALL AGENCIES sucks!!!! My problem with teaching new divers his information is there are too many variables that they will never grasp it and never calculate it... Most people dive for fun and don't like/understand/won't do the math on vacation. (hell, most people can not do tables and they just go dive and follow the guide -- Sad) Variables include ~~~ NOT in any order ~~~~1) comfort in the water, 2) new diver gas consumption sucks until they get 60 - 100 dives under their (weight) belt 3) Fitness 4) Buoyancy issues 5) current 6) water temp. 7) Tank temp also air temp in tank 8) What type of wetsuit they are wearing, 9) dive number (overall ) and what dive number during the week they have 10) Concierge diving The bigger point I make with my students is that if they can remember that the deeper they are the more gas they will be using. at 66 feet they will be using 3 times as much than on the surface. Now, with very advanced students, Instructors, and Tec Divers. it is very important that they know how to calculate gas consumption and when to have backup plans and make gas switches

    • @TampaBayDiving
      @TampaBayDiving 21 день назад

      @Raybrienza As an independent instructor who teaches private courses I put in extra time with the students to learn these skills and work them out. I also stress the importance of knowing how to calculate these variables manually vs just relying on a computer. I believe it is a lost art as well that should still be taught. The goal with this video is for viewers to be able to use it as a resource to look back on as a reference. Feel free to share with any students who may need practice or have questions. Blake, good video. The public safety diver programs that the agencies are starting to come out with are ok for minimum levels. As you know I'm a SSI and SDI/TDI instructor of at least 32+ years. I think you are right when you say that the basic scuba classes and the list of specialties that you need for this are a great starting point for someone who wants to look into a PSD program. I have looked into the SSI program (started in 2022), and the SDI/TDI (ERDI started in 2021/2022). I was certified with Dive Rescue International in 1987. Dive Rescue International has been around since about 1973; they are the basis for the NAVY, Coast Guard, Many fire departments, and police departments around the world. (At one time SSI and Dive Rescue were one company). The problem that most people will run into has not changed much in the 30 years that I have been around PSD teams. In the 1970-early 1990's, the teams were voluntary and started to move to paid teams. therefore, if you were not on a paid Fire dept/Police department your team was usually disbanded thanks to insurance restrictions. There are very few voluntary teams in the US today.

    • @TampaBayDiving
      @TampaBayDiving 21 день назад

      There are few around but they are there and new teams can be formed. This video was meant to prove that as well. Very few things are free but I was surprised when I enrolled. The opportunities that were presented to me were a blessing. Hopefully more state guards across the country will implement a dive team. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

    Can get yourself into a lot of trouble with a DPV. To get the most out of one and stay safe, take a course.

    • @TampaBayDiving
      @TampaBayDiving Месяц назад

      Eh, once you've purchased one read the manual front to back multiple times so that you know how to operate it and always follow the rules of diving and you'll be fine. Most incidents occur from people coming up to fast which is what we're all taught not to do in our Open Water course. If the course was offered by the manufacturer of your dpv then that's a whole different story. I still haven't found a instructor who knows how to use every dpv or at least all of the most popular ones. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

    • @thedivesmith8838
      @thedivesmith8838 Месяц назад

      @TampaBayDiving It's not so much the operation of the DPV that's difficult, it's the not knowing what you don’t know that can become the problem. I use mine in the cold waters of Canada, sometimes I can be a mile off shore. A DPV diver needs to know about battery planning, like air planning you don't want to run out. Do you know how to tow a buddy? Did you practice? Do you know how to air share on a DPV? Did you practice? You are talking to, for the most part, a group of divers that can barely manage their gas. I think a DPV course is a good idea.

    You can get an open water certification in Okinawa for around $450.00 including classroom, pool dives, open water dives, and rental equipment. The caveat is that you have to be active-duty or retired military and do it through an MWR facility like Kadena Marina. I know, not applicable to most people. But that is the EXCEPTION to the rule. Blake, interesting topic. As we have chatted before, Im an SSI (38 years) and SDI/TDI (30+ years) instructor in Colorado, USA. There was a time that you could get certified for $250, that was around 2000. Today, the dive shop I teach out of group classes (Pool & Lecture ) is $290+165(materials) = $455. Privates are $450+165= 615. Our classes include pool use (onsite), and gear use. (we dont require the purchase of any equipment) Open water costs depends on options and range from $175 (on a sponsored group trip to + trip cost) "local" open water (8-hour drive) $300-400. Referral out to a destination we state that it would be anywhere from $200-600. Our prices are around the average for our area. At our shop which is primarily SSI, we don't charge extra for the different agency classes. We have on staff me - SSI, SDI/TDI. and 3 other instructors who are Also PADI. Everyone is at least SSI. we have around 38 instructors. On a side note: our shop buys a DAN group insurance policy that costs us approximately $250. if we were to get that on our own we would be in the $800 range. Some of our local independent instructors' prices start at $500+ for materials + you must have your own mask, fins & snorkel. We have a dive shop in the area that does 2 for 1 or Groupon.... and they are misleading the customers because they also nickel & dime them. --- NOT my style.

    • @TampaBayDiving
      @TampaBayDiving Месяц назад

      Thanks for sharing your shop's prices Ray! Colorado seems like a good place for an entry-level diver to get certified. Curious to know if you are at elevation and automatically teaching your students on different tables? That other shop is doing themselves and their customer's a dis-service. It's always better to be upfront and not surprise your customers with fees after they've already paid money. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

    • @Raybrienza
      @Raybrienza Месяц назад

      @@TampaBayDiving Blake, No we don't teach the high-altitude tables - we do talk about them. If they are interested we have a specialty for that. For the divers that will do their open waters in "local" dives, we will do a bit more of a discussion. Most of our students do not and will never dive in Colorado or at altitude. -- Divers in Colorado are like birds we fly south to the Caribbean. Colorado has the highest number of certified divers per capita in the US. There are more snow skiers per capita in Florida and Texas than in Colorado.

    I paid around $150 for the NAUI online course and then $500 for my dive training here in Virginia. Worth every penny!

    I guess the person asking the question is not a diver. Anyone in South Florida will know that 250 is impossible, just the boat rides for the open water dives, the air fills and the course code are more than that. Even if you choose to do a shore dive (which I think is risky for open water first dive) the cost is still higher that 250. I don’t understand people that always try to get other people work on the cheap.

      I do think that these people are in the minority. The majority of students will pay for quality training. I have had very few calls asking for discounts but when it does happen I simply explain the costs with what they will receive and refuse to water down our standards. I was trained by the South African Police Spescial Task Force in the late 80's. We were certified as Class iv Emergency divers (The lowest commercial certification) and I can tell you that it was very physical and thourough on the then accepted theorie for the time. We did most of the topics discussed under Naui MSD sylabus and small boat handling. In a short amount of time I recovered bodies, firearms, vehicles, stolen property etc. We dived in rivers, dams, the sea, mineshafts, drainage pipes etc. To make a long story short, I was signed off on 38 meters in a sinkhole named Wondergat in the Northwest Province of South Africa. We were allowed to dive to 30 meters and with additional training were allowed to dive to 50 meters on air as long as we did not have a decompression schedule of more than 20 minutes. Nitrox at the time was still considered the devils gas and apart from timers, computers were frowned upon. I am 59 years old now and recently got certified by a Naui instructor as a MSD. I am now busy with a nitrox course as there might be opportunities for me using it future. Would you consider a background like that worthy of the "bullshit cert MSD" qualification as I am no longer a police diver but do dive recreationally?

    Blake ... an Interesting video... The ship prop and the diver ... is not real. If it were, the diver would have been blown away. He could not have swam away. In Bonaire last year I was a 1/2 mile away from 2 Cruise ships pulling out of port at the same time (They were 1-1/2 hour late) and we were blown from no current to unexpectedly into a 5-knot current. It was not fun. the next video, with the treasure hunter guy, is a moron a Clickbait... not worth the time.....

    It's horrible that mammals get caught in fishing nets and die. In this video you give the impression whale sharks are mammals. I think you know they are not whales. They are the largest fish species in the world.

    The clip of the diver near the propeller does not appear to be real. Judging by the apparent size of the diver, visibility and clarity of water at this distance does not appear correct for this distance based on my experience. You are never allowed under any kind of boat when diving. big no no.

    During my AOW Cert Dives, My Octo came apart in 30 feet of water. Next day my Mask strap broke at the start of Wreck Dive. Which caused a bit of a problem as I need Rx Lenses. One of my fellow students had a Freeflow Reg in 60 feet, 47F water. The other ended the Deep Dive with Mask Squeeze. And looked like a Racoon.

      @@TampaBayDiving I think the Instructor saw what happened at 30 Feet. I got the Reg under control. Surfaced. He asked if I was ok? Told him I had Equipment Failure. And showed it to him.
