Very good question! On a technical level the top players are fantastic, and I think good enough to play in any league in Europe (as we’ve seen with Mitoma, Sugawara, Tomiyasu, Asano, Kubo, etc.), but the issue is that the J.League is still very domestic and the best players leave the league before reaching their peak to further their careers in Europe. This means, to me at least, that the J.League is still quite underdeveloped and not yet reaching its full potential. It’s definitely technically above the second tiers around Europe, but probably as a whole not at the same level as the Prem, La Liga, Serie A, etc.. Factoring in the style of play and the fact that young players leave early, I’d say it’s most similar to the Dutch Eredivisie. Just my opinion though and I’m sure many would disagree with me!

I don't think it's for the money (at least not immediately, as a lot of them play in Belgium or other non-elite leagues), but rather as seeing it as a stepping stone to further development and perhaps an even bigger move in the future. Ultimately very good for the national team, but not great for the J.League!

I’d say Kashima vs Machida if Machida are in the title race at that point (unlikely). But be aware it’s quite far from Tokyo. You can get a bus that goes directly from Tokyo station to Kashima’s stadium, but it takes about 3+hours. Urawa game may be the safe option..

If Machida isn’t in the title race by then, would you still go? I do think Machida and Kashima could compete for the last AFC Champions League position.

Would you he going by car or public transport? If car then kashima as it’s a good vibe, if train then Urawa as much easier to get to.

@@jleaguejourneys I would go via public transport. First ever time in Japan and want to watch a soccer game. I did see that FC Tokyo vs Cerezo Osaka is also playing that day. Want to go to a game where there’s something on the line but open to a game with a great atmosphere. Your recommendation would be much appreciated.
