December is a strange month for reading - at first there's no time at all what with all the preparations for Christmas. And then there are the holidays and suddenly there's not much to do besides reading and eating (a lot of companies require their employees to take the days from Christmas to New Year off in Germany - I'm not sure how it works in Australia :'D)

Interested in your thoughts on The Advent of Winter, I read the one story per day last December and it was something to look forward to at the end of each day

Uhhh nice list. I knew about a couple, haven't (yet) read any of them but that really needs to change! I'd recommend the Lamplight Murder Mysteries by Morgan Stang. Wonderful blend of Agatha Christie like mysteries with fantasy / and quite nightmarish horror creatures x3

I've fallen into every single trap aside from special editions, I generally prefer to buy lots of paperbacks than one very expensive book, but I feel like I always spend a lot of money... 😭😭😭😭 I console myself by thinking that I am building the library I will use when I retire 😁

hmmm I don't do book buying bans. But my digital library mostly came to be due to special offers. For physical books I tend to buy favorites I already read mostly second hand (though to get the middle book in a series I had to buy it new). I usually give myself permission to buy a new book I don't know yet on a trip - for the memories ;D I'd like to have a little physical collection of my favorites, to lend to friends and reread them <3 But I'm a little bit afraid as well, since I never know if I end up moving to a smaller place or maybe abroad (again) :'D A kindle is a lot easier on the luggage 🤣

I shouldn't be surprised anymore by how many books Tao Wong puts out... yet I still am flabbergasted every time lol. That Christmas horror story sounds wiiiiild, I need it in my life! Thanks for sharing :))

November is such slow reading for me currently, I really should not be looking at more new releases, but alas... 😀

For a book that has no trans characters, as such, I feel like a lot of my experiences of transness went into it (but of course there are ways in which there's no doubt experiential overlap between queer identities).

I quite enjoyed My Heart is a Chainsaw and am looking forward to continuing on in the trilogy. Lolll so you're planning to finish Malian like March-April 2025? xD

Yeeees Tyler Kyle is so good. Like, the fact that I read it a year ago and it is still SO vivid in my brain is a true testament to Steve's writing. I loved it! Also, congrats on tackling another Malazan chunker lol. Hope it will all be so worth it in the end!!

Good to see that you liked Toll the Hounds as it is a very divisive book and turns off many readers due to the extreme amount of philosophizing, while for some people it is their absolute favorite because of that. Also really glad to hear that you want to continue with the other Malazan books. First of all, except for Kharkanas, the other Malazan books, especially the ones by Esslemont are usually short, much less philosophical and very fast paced. So you can read them pretty fast, and don't have to space them out like the main series. Just a short note if you are interested : 1. Novels of the Malazan Empire, 6 books, is the series that should be read immediately after the main series, as it is the other half of the main story, takes place in parallel to these books in other parts of the world, and picks up the storylines or characters that are left midway in the main series. Also it is the only other completed series. The quality is a bit weak in the first 2 books, but get much better from book 3. 2. The Witness trilogy: Only 1 book is out so far, this is a sequel to the main series, written by Erikson, and is FANTASTIC. This book shows how much more popular Erikson could have been, if he wanted to write like other fantasy authors in a more straight forward way. The 2nd book will come next year. I recommend reading this book after Novels of the Malazan Empire. 3. The Kharkanas trilogy: This is only for super fans of Erikson's philosophy, a prequel set millenia ago, showing the elder races. The philosophy in these books is Toll the Hounds times 20, especially the second book. The third book is yet to be published. I don't recommend this series unless you really love long philosophizing of Erikson in Toll the Hounds. 4. Paths to Ascendancy series by Esslemont. It has 4 books published and 2 yet to come. This is Esslemont's best work, deals with the formation of the Malazan Empire which almost everybody loves and is interested to know about. The books are very fast paced, light and short, and really well done. 5. The B&B novellas: These are just side novels with no connection to any other books and really not a required read. But they are very short, dark comedy, and good as casual reading, and can be read at the end if wished.

Ian Irvine’s Three Worlds series are amazing! I have them all. I started with Geomancer (from his Well of Echoes quartet) when one of the cleaners at work noticed that I enjoyed fantasy/sci-fi and left it on my desk for me, and I was immediately hooked! Definitely recommend!

I just started the Shady Hollow series because my friend has been trying to get me into mystery, and I figured if I wanted to get there from my usual fantasy/sci fi reads, a mystery with animals would be the way to go haha

I don't mind the content if that's what a story/book is about (and is the social context), but I do find sometimes King's own bias creeps in with his portrayal of fat people (as an example).
