Fred Pedley
Великобритания
Добавлен 7 ноя 2019
My Grandfather Fred Pedley (known as Grandpop) was born in 1913 in Middleton, near Manchester. From a young age he was interested in photography and film making and he documented his family life, their travels around Great Britain and Europe, his work in the aeronautical engineering industry and even moments of national significance.
Some of his vast collection of films spanning the period from the early 1940s to the 1970s were transferred from 16mm cine film to DVD for the family around 20 years ago and I have started converting those DVDs to MP4 and will be uploading them to RUclips when I can, so they can be seen by the wider world.
For more information or to use Fred’s films please contact me, in all cases including embedding and linking Fred Pedley must be credited. All films are ©️Fred Pedley unless otherwise stated.

Three successive bitter winters ‘the war winters’ 39/40, 40/41 and this one 41/42. Never happened before or since to have 3 freezing winters on the trot. Must have been so hard keeping warm in those draughty old houses.
Wonderful series of films of the greatest generation that has lived on these islands getting on with life. My parents being part of that generation, I'm wonder what they were actually doing at this particular time in history on this snowy day. Thanks for sharing. I've enjoyed your footage of Anglesey as my father was born on Anglesey.
I recognise the route through Rainow (B5470) but not the layby where the car pulls in or where the children are playing, any ideas where this is?
They said petrol rationing didnt affect everyone, not those with gas guzzling posh cars.
Back in the day when it was looked after
No need to set the clocks back 82 years as nothing has changed👍😁
What in incredible film, a lovely snapshot of a brief family reprieve from the drudgery of wartime, and colour footage of PBYs in the water in wartime UK no less. A copy of this needs to be made for the archives. Fred was obviously a clever and perceptive man, and he obviously appreciated beauty as well as engineering, like his footage of flowers and the cheeky sign off near the end! My grandfather was of the same era, he could build anything from steam locomotives, to my uncles wartime wooden toy cars, to the first TV set in the street, made so everyone could watch the Coronation. He was also a decent artist, a rare combination, I wish I still had the pencil drawing of a Porsche he drew me from memory. Pre war folk were a different breed, I miss them.
Brilliant. I also have some colour film footage from north wales in the late 1930s. My question this footage is that it most certainly would have e been shot on a wind up camera at 16 frames per second but the here it is being projected at 24 fps, making everything seem a little too fast and jerky. Try playing this at a slower speed….
Nice, but mine in the same year was lovely. Unfortunately, no film though ☹️
Shorts and wellies. I remember. I were there.
Glad you enjoyed it, hope it brought back some good memories.
I think that the folks in this film clip needed those Gas Masks because of the air quality rather than the Germans dropping something nasty. An interesting snapshot in time. Thank you for uploading this and your other films.
And now families spend most of their time, heads down looking at their phones.
Yep, even the drivers 😂
Thanks for posting, where abouts if known was this particular film shot.
Sorry for the delay in responding, glad you've enjoyed the film - it was filmed at Tonge field, Middleton and Ashworth Valley between Bury and Rochdale.
Thank you very much.
Mr. Pedley's car is a Morris, the light-coloured car following it is almost certainly a Vauxhall. Both are1930s models.
Glad you've enjoyed the film and identified the cars - we're not sure if it is Fred's car or one of his friend's and he is in the passenger seat filming the journey.
The car is a Railton, an expensive car built in the 1930s. Note the rivets along the bonnet.
Yes, he had a Railton which features in some of the other films.
There was a petrol ration for private motoring until sometime in 1942. After that it was only for business use and still rationed.
Thanks for commenting and adding to the debate about petrol rations - I think from the flowers in bloom they are there in late spring, so depending when this ruling came in... but as you said petrol was available for business use and Fred would visit Saunders Roe engineering works for business - and bring the family with him!
Amazing parks were so nice during the war
Glad you enjoyed it.
Looks icy. How did they keep warm. Oh yeah coal fires. Cosy.
Coal rationed in wartime , 2 ounces of meat per week .
I remember my Grandparents telling me about chilly nights and mornings!
Great to see this footage, thanks for putting this on RUclips. I worked in Lairds (Anglesey) Ltd. In the early 80s. The slipways where they launched the flying boats and the motor torpedo boats where still plainly to be seen.
Glad you enjoyed it, hope it brought back good memories.
Assim fica muito sem graça e ruim😢
Rainow at 47 seconds
I thought you said a rainbow! I was impressed at your observation, then realised it was Rainow.
We should still be using Kodachrome today
It's nice isn't it?
Kodachrome minus the chrome
Ha, ha, well observed! Most of Fred Pedley's films are in colour, even during the war so I use the same titles and descriptions for all of them but there are a few 1930s films that are all black and white.
I always find these old films fascinating. That was “now” to those people.
I know, I always think that, we imagine the past to be in black and white but to the people in these films the times were modern.
Life and times 83 years ago. Incredible. Thanks for posting. ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed the film - it's strange to think my elderly relatives who I knew when I was little are these young people in their twenties and early thirties having fun on holiday.
Wolesley and an Austin 16?
I'm not sure - somebody else has commented a Morris and a Vauxhall.
@@fredpedley8737oh well, getting a bit past it now, eh? 😂
@@richardcummins5465 not necessarily! I'm not a car expert so I have no idea, but there are some other comments about the models of cars so it might be interesting for you.
No traffic anywhere and he prangs his motor. IMBECILE 😂

Mr. Pedley, please would I be able to write about this video in Macclesfield Nub News? Thank you!
Hi, sorry I only just saw this - yes please do, but please credit Fred Pedley.
Great footage! My dad bought a boat in Conwy in1953, and I'm still mucking about in boats in this area!
Glad it brought back some good memories.
Popped up by YT as a suggestion, and enjoyed watching it. A by-gone era. Looks to have been filmed at least in the latter half of the 30's. The DNO registration on the car (when they were playing with the ball and bat) was released in Mar 1936.
Great observation! Glad you enjoyed it.
Ball and bat ? Cricket ? Smile. Why in the marsh though
Very angry geese
Yes, especially when somebody is bothering them and their nest.
Fab! 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it.
Idyllic scenes, inquisitive cows and a few reminders of the war. Super to see.
Glad you enjoyed the film
Hi. I don’t suppose you have any footage of the concrete ‘water barges’ that were moored in a trot near Ynys Y Big?
No, unfortunately we don’t have any film of that
Not sure if you know but there's one still in Hirael bay, Port Penrhyn.
I do know about that one, came from Bromborough…The ones in a trot on the Strait at Ynys-y-Big were ‘tank barges’, Porth Penrhyn is an open lighter
Mr. Pedley, may I ask you, do you have any connection with Beaumaris, North Wales?
As it was filmed at least 90 yrs ago I would assume that Fred may not be around to answer your question.
@@jwm5165 , Thank you. But your 'revelation" had not gone unnoticed by me. You see I once knew a Mr. Fred Pedley whose home was in the Manchester area and it was not an impossibility that it could be a son of the man from the 30's. You see I was referring to a man of same name in 1969. Elementary my dear Watson.
Hi, it’s actually the granddaughter of Fred Pedley - yes, this is the same Fred Pedley who lived near Manchester and visited Beaumaris often. Did you know him?
@@fredpedley8737, Yes. a long time ago. When his bungalow had just been built. I am a long way from there now and much water under the bridge since. He had ,then, a little Staffordshire (bull) Terrier who had lost one eye. If you know the gentleman or if you are a relative I would love to speak again. It is a memory of decent, good people that I am afraid seem to be missing from our world today. Thank you for responding to my inquiry and if what I have written makes any sense, please let me know.
@@ccahill2322the dog was called “Mickey” (I assume after the mouse) he lost the eye in a disagreement with a cat. I remember him well when I was a small child at my grandparents house in Middleton and also he travelled to Beaumaris on holiday with us. The house was bought in 1966 as family legend has it after a weekend in the caravan he had at Red Wharf bay with the first grandchild (me) which was apparently not good for disturbance free slumbers.
I couldn't identify any of the roads. Do you know where it was shot exactly?
Is it the Cat and Fiddle
No not exactly, it was very hard to pin any of them down but there are images of road signs with road numbers, which is where I worked out which direction they were travelling in. I think they go through Macclesfield pretty quick.
It came down chester road past chester road tavern to traffic lights then the other one i recognized was going down Tower hill in Rainow
Opening is approaching Monks Heath, then down Chelford Road to Broken Cross. The Pack Horse is on the right.
Its nice to see old footage like this being put on youtube. I have sailed a lot through the menai straits and seen where the flying boats were moored up. Thanks for uploading
Glad you enjoyed it
Where is this lodge? At Rhodes, opposite North Manchester Golf Club?
Hi John, thanks for your comment - I'm not sure where it is exactly. The family lived near Middleton junction at the time, and Fred often filmed around Alkrington hill and Tonge field, though it could be anywhere in the area.
Just love these home movies of the countryside back in the day. Glad you saved it to modern video before the film degrades totally from age. Being it's 1941 time line, I'm thinking they are escaping the London Blitz air raids by camping in someone's cow pasture out in the countryside.
Glad you enjoyed it - this is my grandparents and their friends and family on a camping holiday from Manchester. The cows certainly want to join in the cooking, don't they?!
5:35-6:24 hey isn't that Stymie from The Little Rascals?
Yes indeed its Stymie.
"Songs of the Sun" (1931).
Seagull engine. Nearly threw himself out of it. Then it broke down. What a surprise. Ps must have been filmed by someone else since it’s Fred in the boat.
I know, but that's what I always say.
Lovely to see the gardens in the grounds of Wythenshawe Hall as they used to be,even in the middle of the second world war the gardens were beautiful.I spend a bit of time there now having a jog etc and you can still see the outline of were the flower beds used to be.
Glad you enjoyed the film!
I don't think it's hay making, but sheaves of cereals that are then being stooked. Not close enough to say if barley or wheat. Nice film
Thanks for your comment, someone else has actually mentioned this before.
Are they feeding the ducks in Foxdenton park?
Yes, I think so.
all the telegraph's poles with hundreds of wires on them. Better then than now for sure.😢
You wouldn’t think there was a war going on
Thanks for your comment, life went on for those at home.
excellent
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed it.
Worst camera work ive ever seen, Fred
Thanks for your comment, I guess...
